Butler and family and James Bailey and family during the past week. Lincoln L. Ebersole, of Sterling Run, while visiting with friends in town last Thursday, called to pay his respects to the PRESS office. E. Mead Floyd, who recently return ed home from a business school, has ac cepted a position in the office of C. B. Howard Company. Mrs. N. J. Swartz, of this place, was called to Wharton, Pa., Monday morn ing, by the death of her uncle, whose funeral took place on Tuesday. R. E Palmer, of Angelica, N. Y., was in Emporium, last Friday. Mr. Palmer was formerly employed in the office of C. B. Howard Company. VJ Miss Faye Palmer, who has been the guest at the home of Mrs. S. L Stod dard, has gone to New Castle, Pa., where she is the guest of her brother. Mr. and Mrs. John Jones returned to their home at Taylor, Pa., on Satur day, being called there by the death of Mrs. J's brother, the late Joseph Ilar bot. Miss Mollie Stephens, of Couders port, was guest of her brother, J. H. Stephens, and also visited at the home of Henry Auchu and family last Sun day. Messrs. Jesse Hicks and Harry Bowers, of Hicks Run, were in Em porium last Monday and called at the Press office, looking over our new plant. James Davison went to Sterling Run, Wednesday morning, to assist in the store of John E. Smith for a short time. VV. H. Van Wert, Supt. of the Siuna mahoning Powder Works, was a busi ness caller at Emporium, Tuesday evening. Misses Jean and Sadie Mclnneas, of Corry, who were guests of Miss Floss Taggart last week, returned home on Saturday. Ben J. Erskine, who has been trans acting business at New York City for the past week, returned home, Tues day afternoon. Mrs. Joa. Lingle and daughter Miss Nell, leave Emporium to-day for Cam den, N. J., and other sea coast cities, to visit relatives before returning to their western home. Mrs. C. M. Thomas returned last Friday from West Pittston, Pa., where she visited with her daughter, Mre. Maud Germon. She was greatly pleased with her visit. D. W. Keyes, one of C. B. Howard Company's most faithful mill men, was a PBESS caller Monday evening and passed a pleasant hour with ye editor. Hie good wife continues to improve, we are pleased to learn. Asa Murray accompanied his wife to the hospital at Williamsport on Tues day, where she will have to undergo an operation. Mrs. Murray has not been in good health for some time, and the doctors here thought an operation advisable. Mrs. Catharine Murray went to Sterling Run on Tuesday afternoon, taking the children of Mr. and Mrs. Asa Murray with her. The children will remain at the home of their grand parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Devling, at Sterling Run. Mrs. Anna Bentley and children, who have been visiting her mother, Mrs. Thomas Raddigan and family, Fifth street, returned to her home at Mt. Holley, N. J., the last of the week. Mrs. Raddigan accompanied her and will be her guest for a short time. Mias Belle Cleary has accepted a position at the store of Mrs. E. S. Cop persmith. Miss Cleary has recently returned from Sistersville, W. Va., where she was employed in a depart ment store. She is a very obliging young lady and is sure to please the public. Prof. J. W. Sweeney, of St. Marys, County Supt. of Schools of Elk county, was in Emporium last Saturday and Sunday. For seven years he has lllled the ofllce of District Grand Knight of K. of C., for Cameron, Elk, Potter and McKean, but declined to accept an other term owing to his other pressing duties. Mrs. A. G. Hamilton and Bon, of Wellsboro, Pa., are guests at the Country Home of County Treasurer Charles J. Howard and wife, on the Portage. Mrs. Hamilton will be re membered by our town's people as Miss Helen VanValkenberg, at one time assistant principal in oar schools and very popular with all our people. B. P. MeNulty, the wide-awake Oriental rag aud drapery agent, came down from Ridgway last Saturday to attend K. of 0., district meeting and remained over Sunday. Mac is a pleasant, genial gentleman and has many warm frieuds here who are al ways pleased to greet him. By the way, Mr. MeNulty is oue of the most eloqueut orators in this section of the state and his services art* eagerly sought after upon all publie occasions. Jos. A.
