Shaffer, of Ridgway, visited with his father, Civil Engineer A. H. .Shaffer, at this place, last Friday. Riley A. Murray, of the PRESS office force, spent Sunday at St. Marys, where he was the guest of relatives. W. F. Schweikart, who accepted a position at State College, a few months ago, has returned to his home at this place. Mrs. C. M. Bailey, of Mason Hill, ac companied by Miss Murriel and Master Don, were pleasant PRESS callers last Friday. Miss Lilly Shugart departed for Clearfield, Pa., on Wednesday after noon, at which place she will be guest of her grand-parents. C. R. Husted, of East Emporium, made the PRESS office a business call on Wednesday afternoon, renewing his subscription. Messrs. H. M. Olmsted and J. Ray mond Cook, of Ridgway, spent Sun day at Emporium, guests at their re spective homes. Mr. and Mrs. William McCaslin and daughter, Miss Sarah, of Hicks Run, were business callers at Emporium the last of the week. H. A. Cox, treasurer of the Sinnama honing Powder Company, at this place, spent the first of the week, transacting business at Baltimore. Hon. F. E. Baldwin, of Austin, and Hon. W. K. Swetland, of Coudersport, were in Emporium on Tuesday even ing and were guests at Hotel Warner. Rev. J. L. Bogue, pastor of the Bap tist Church, preached at Driftwood last Friday evening, returning to Em porium Saturday morning. Frank H. Dodson departed for Wheel ing, W. Va., last Friday, where he has accepted a position with the Chamber lain Medicine Company, as traveling salesman. Miss Lena Minard, one of the "Hello Girls" at this place, was guest of re latives and friends at St. Marys, last Sunday, returning to Emporium on Monday morning. Miss Margaret Cummings, of Phila delphia, arrived in town last Thurs day, and is guest at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Cum mings and family, on South Broad street. The many friends of Miss Edna, the bright and pleasant twelve year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joe. Friendel, who reside on South Maple street, will will be sorry to that she has been in poor health for some itme. Miss Encie Howard returned to her home at this place the last of the week, from New York City, where she had been visiting for some time. Miss Howard brought back several prizes, captured while away, as a bridge player. Prof. Earl Bachop, principal of the Shippen schools for the past school year, departed for his home at Sheakle ville, Pa., last Thursday. Prof. Bachop has many friends at this place who hope that he may return next year. The PUESS follows him. Messrs. B. J. Erskine and Everett Pierson were business callers at St. Marys, on Wednesday. Mr. Erskine returned to Emporium in the evening. Mr. Pierson has been transfered to the lamp works at St. Marys and will lo cate at that place. Everett's many friends at this place regret the change made, as he was one of the "jolly good fellows," and wish him good luck in bis new home. What is Waukenzy? Receipts for month, $58.48; expendi tures, |G54.80; balance on hand, $1,946.03. The message of the Burgess vetoing the motion of April 4tli, "That the grades for all streets in the Borough not already provided for by ordinance, be established by ordinance," was read. Mr. Howard moved that the motion be pas d, notwithstanding the veto of the Bu.gess. There being no second to the motion, the President declared that the veto stood. The message of the Burgess vetoing the election of Mr. Mundy as Street Commissioner, on April 4th, was read. Moved by Mr. Howard, seconded by Mr. Pearsall, that Mr. Mundy be elect ed Street Commissioner notwithstand ing the veto of the Burgess. The roll being called, the Councilmen voted as follows: Ayes:—Messrs. Haupt, Howard and Pearsall. Nays:—Messrs. Foster, Mumford and Norris. The motion was declared lost. Moved by Mr. Howard, seconded by Mr. Norris, that taxes for the year 1910 be levied as follows: Borough, 6 mills; Sewer extension Bond, 1 mill; Broad Street Paving Bond, 1 mill. Unani mously carried. Mr. Howard offered an ordinanoe entitled -'An ordinance providing for increasing the indebtedness of the Borough of Emporium, for the purpose of curbing and paving Broad street, and raising and repairing the City Hall." Moved by Mr. Howard, seconded by Mr. Norris, that the ordinance as read be passed. The roll being called, all the councilmen voted "aye" and the ordinance was declared passed. On motion of Messrs. Norris and Howard the matter of surface water sewer on Poplar street was referred to the street committee, as was also the matter of size for surface water sewer on Broad street. The Borough Auditors' report for year ending March Ist, 1910, was read, and on motion of Messrs. Howard and Norris, was accepted and placed on file. On motion of Messrs.
