Subduing Mother's Voice.
The successful merchant invited his
parents to visit him In New York city.
They came gladly and on the following
Sabbath were escorted to a fashiona
ble church in Fifth avenue. Some of
the hymns were familiar. In their ren
dition the visiting pair contributed
heavily, with the credit for volume In
favor of the father. Although not al
ways In correct time and sometimes In
discord, yet the joy of this good couple
leaped forth In Joyous praise, and they
did not see the glowering looks of
nearby worshipers or the beetlike face
of their devoted son.
"Father," explained the merchant
that afternoon while his mother was
taking her accustomed nap, "In our
churches the congregations do very lit

Lottery at White House.
The White House was the scene of
lottery drawing on Monday in which
the federal patronage of the state of
South Dakota was disposed of. The
President of the United States turned
the wheel of fortune, and Senators
Kittridge and Gamble drew out the
prize packages.
Many federal offices in South Dakota
are vacant on account of the inability
of Kittridge and Gamble to agree up
on applicants. When the two senators
fore-gathered at the White House to
day they were still unable to agree up
on recommnedations.
President Raosevelt suggested that
they draw lots. They consented.

THE SALOONS MUST GO
Judge Hall Gives Public Notice
from the Bench that the Li
censes of Ridgway's Three
Saloons Will Not be
Renewed.
Ridgway Advocate.
Afterjthe jury had retired Thursday
night in the case of the Commonwealth
against Antonio Mußcatello, who was
charged with stabbing Frank Degnan
during a brawl which occurred in front
of Ross Drug store on Main street one
Saturday night last August, Judge Hall
made the following remarks from the
bench:
Not long ago a man had his throat
cut in a drunken brawl in the saloon of
Q. W. Shelander in the block opposite
this Court House. An indictment was
preseu ted to the Grand Jury at a form
er term against the man who did the
cutting and was ignored. I am satis
fied that this action on the part of the
Grand Jury was not |because of lack of
evidence to sustain the indictment, but
batiause the trial of the case would
have disclosed that a crowd of young
boys had become drunk in that saloon.
In the case which has just been sub
mitted to the jury, it has been proved
beyond question that a number of
boys, so youthful in appearance that
no J man could have mistaken their
minority were served with drinks in
'•The Salberg" on the evening of this
affray and although there is every rea
son to believe that they were already
intoxicated when they went there they
had no difficulty in buying drinks
either on account of their age or their
condition.
There are three saloons in that block.
It is in the shopping district in the
principal part of the town and is nec
essarily the constant resort of ladies
and children, yet it is a daily and more
especially a nightly occurrence to see
crowds of intoxicated men congregat
ed on the sidewalk in front of one or
more of these saloons engaged in pro
fane and abscene discourse which the
passersby cannot help hearing. This I
have witnessed myself hundreds of
times, and it is a source of constant
and just complaint on the part of the
ladles of this town. No effort appar
ently is made by the police to abate
this nuisance so long as actual hostiltics
do not occur, although it seems to me
they could prevent it in a large mea
sure if they were so disposed. There
is a good hotel at each end of that
block, each of which is a source of
credit to our town and entitled to our
"upport. There are others close by, in
umbers quite sufficient, I think, to
supply all the reasonable demands of
the public for liquor. Under these cir
cumstances we are of the opinion that
the three drinking places opposite the
Court House are entirely unnecessary
and that their maintenance in that lo
cality is a blot on our otherwise order
ly town which should no longer be per
mitted.
As my colleagues on theßench are in
entire accord with me in this opinion,
I mention it at this time, and in this
public manner in order that the sev
eral parties holding those licenses may
have notice that they will not be again
renewed, and they may have an op
portunity to arrange their business af
fairs accordingly.
