Strong hands disarmed the desperate flagman and quiet was again re stored without calling the.police. Mason is very ill and will be taken to the hospital this week for treatment. Her many friends hope for her recovery. Last Thursday evening Mrs. William Logue had occasion to start a fire in.her hen house in order to purify it from lice and in some way did not get the fire put entirely out. Shortly after building was found to be 011 tire and was entirely oonsumed together with about seventy-five nice chickens. When the fire was discovered it was too late to put it out. W. R. Smith was a business caller in Empori um Saturday. G. W. Starr called on friends in Sterling Run Saturday. A. W. Smith killed a fox Friday on the moun tain and presented the hide at the Squires Office where he made formal application for the bounty. The onion growing contest between Levi Smith and John Jordan is getting interesting. Both gentlemen are doing their best to win the prize offered by W. R. Smith which consists of a full treatment of Dr. Dunlaps Spring tonic, seven bottles in all. At six o'clock Tuesday evening Levt's onions were in blossom and John said his would be in the same condition in the morning. Major English, of the R. F. D. will act as Judge and the contest will be watched with interest. Elmer Hill and Clarence Johnson were Em porium callers Sunday. Monday evening about 7 p. m., a small gray team belonging to Mr. Hayes, the liveryman, of Emporium and driven by George Carter were' frightened by a dog at the residence of Alex Mason, and ran away. Mr. Carter was thrown out of the wagon and the team rau down the township road as far as Bquire Sullivan's hen yard where they fell on their sides after becom. ing entangled in the wire fence. In a short time B. J. Collins, W. R. Smith, Homer Ives and C. J. Miller were upon the scene and soon had the team on their feet and disentangled tlfe wire from about them but C. J. Miller in trying to un buckle a strap narrowly escaped being kicked in the leg, so near, in fact that his trouser leg was torn open at the knee. In about fifteen minute after this Mr. Carter came down the road a.nyj' took charge of the team. Mr. Carter was hurt somewhat about the ribs and was attended by Dr. Beale, of Driftwood, The team was not in. jnred much outside of a few cuts about the legs but the wagon was damaged a great deal, the en tire being demolished.
