GEORGE J. LABAK, of Emporium,
one of our Associate Judges by appoint
ment of Gov. Pennypacker to till the
vacancy made by the death of Hon. Geo.
A. Walker, having been honored with
the nomination tortile full term by the
Republican party, it is eminently right
and proper that those unacquainted with
our popular citizen should be informed a
little more fully and given a few facts
and reasons why he should bo elected to
the responsible and iiouorablc position of
Associate Judge.
Judge Lißjr was born at I'ktston.
Pa., Dec. 23, 1845, of French-German
parentage; lived on a farm after ten years
of age until the outbreak of the civil war,
when he like thousands of other patriotic
Pennsylvania boys, bo'ted from the farm
and enlisted in the First Pennsylvania
Cavalry, Co. 1., being then but sixteen
years of age. He served ona term ot 1
enlistment and re-eullsted on the field for
three years, passing through every en-;
gagemcnt from the start to finish, never
receiving a scratch After the battle of
Bull Run he wis promoted to Sargeant
for bravery displayed on the field. Mr. ;
La Bar participated iu more than one
hundred battles and "scraps", the most
important being Chancellorsville, Bull
Run, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Wilder-;
ness battles, Cold Harbor, under Gen'l
Grant and Geo. fJregg and participated !
in the hunt to bottle Stonewall Jacksou.
Ilis command after marching down
Shenandoah hastilly returned to partici
pate in that greatest battle of the century
—Gettysburg—and served as one of
Gen. Mead's body guards during the.
battle. Describing this battle, al
ways interesting to a Penn,ylvaii
ian, the Judge described h#w rapidly
the Confederate sharp shooters picked off j
Mead's guard, but the Keystone State
boys stood by their commander. The
First Pennsylvania Cavalry contained
many Cameron county boys, and where

Letter to Balcom & Lloyd.
Emporium, Pa.
Dear Sirs: Now, may be, you can't
gel the goods, if you can, your fortune is
made. Cotton cloth—they call it muslin
in some, parts—at about the usual price
per yard, but wider, twice as wide as
some, and better, wears better, keeps
white and whole a time in all
sorts of wear.
You could sell that cloth for hundreds
of miles; there be no limit.
A yard goes further: one buys less
yards. Wears longer; one buys less
often. It always looks right till well
worn out. No one customer buys so
much of it, but think of the number of
customers!
May be you can't b et it in cloth; but
you can in paint; Devoe. Devoe is as if
it were wider, a gallon goes further; you
buy less gallons; you pay for less gallons;
you pay for painting less gallons—as if
one paid less for making a garment of that
wide cloth—and it keeps its fresh look
and sheds water till you have forgotten
how old it is.
It isn't truth in cloth, but it is in paint;
the less you pay, the better it is; for the
goodness of paint is reckoned by gallons;
less gallons, more goodness. Goodness
in paint is strength. The stronger a paint
the less gallons it takes for a job and the
longer it wears.
Yours truly,
F. W. DEVOE & Co ,
New York.

sure to follow—in fact duiing t| le | ast
three years they were continually to

First regiment was sent into Kentucky to
force peace After serving three years,
six months and fifteen days in active
service, he was mustered out at Harris
burg, Aug. 1805, in his 20th year, re
turning to Wilkes-Barre, where he enter
ed the hard coal mines as miner and bears
the peculiar marks of the miner to-dav.
Judge La Bar was m u ricd in 1867 and
came to Kmporium, working at Fenton's
saw mill under Jos. W. Frank. He fol
lowed this kiud ot work in mill and
woods for several years and finally enter
ed the employ of Kmporium fanning
CO . as fireman and engineer in 1807.
'OB and '0!), later taking up carpenter
work and tor a few years went to Brad
ford and by hard w,.rk and strict eeono
-1 ney saved sufficient money to complete
his little home where he now resides.
Judge Laßar entered business, near his
present store iu 18811, as furniture dealer
«nd undertaker and to-day is one of the
most successful business m n in the
j county. He takes a lively interest in
i the up-building of our town aud always
' aids any worthy object. His kindness to
more than scores of our citizens will
! be gratefully remembered at the polls.
When the Keystone Powder Co., was
! organized he became one of the leading
stockholders and held the position of Vice
President, disposing of his stock last
November. While always a Republican
he never took an active part in politics
until appointed Associate Judge by Gov.
Pennypacker. His popularity among all
classes, rerardless of party, makes him a
strong candidate and his election by a
handsome majority is conceeded by even
, his opponents. An honest, upright
citiz !ii, kind parent, husband and neigh
bor, it will be a pleasure to vote for a
man like Geo. J. Laßar, who invests his
earnings at home, thereby aiding in the
prosperity ot his town and county.
When two strong man come to blows,
even if they are well matched, it is not a
pleasing sight, but if the man who gets
the worst of it will use DeWitt's Witch
Hazel Salve, he will look better and feel
better in short order. Be sure you get
DeWitt's. Good lor everything a salve
is used for. including piles. Sold by 11.

There are some church workers who
try to work for the church.
In these days of rush and hurry cour
tesy is often forgotten. In the mad, pell
mell rush of our life little things are done
to offend that we rather remained undone.
A hastily eaten meal and its resultant
headache may cause us social and finan

one who relieves little ills of this sort by a
little dose of Kouol for dyspepsia. It

For Women
No other modern design so fully meets all the
requirements of the ideal ladies shoe. It
is an uneaqualed combination of style and fit,
shapeliness and comfort. The high but rather
broad heal, arched instep and slightly manish
appearance makes it the swellest sort for the
feet.
If you are a victim of faulty shoes,we can soon
enable you to walk with ease and comfort,
and eventually cure your tender feet. These
shoes will wear twice as long as the ordinary
"ready made" shoes and have a style and fin
ish that is essentially distinctive.
