Ex-Assistant Postmaster General
Briston is going into newspaper work
in Kansas. He turned up enough
news in Washington to show that he
is something of a hustler.
The doctors announce that Gen.
Leonard Wood is suffering from "ex
tosis of the cranium." A lot of his
brother officers said that it was sim
ply swelled.
Tom Lawson and representative
Punston both complain that Kansas is
not appreciative.
An exchange intimates that Mr.
Kockfeller has subscribed to a press
clipping bureau and that he is losing
his mind. Cause or effect?
A man has been arrested in lola,
Kan., for saloon wrecking. Never
heard of a saloon being arrested any
where for man wrecking.
Book agents in New York have
fouud a lot of people willing to pay
SI,OOO to get into print. There are a
lot of them in Washington who would
pay more than that to keep out.
Senator Depew is going to call on
King Edward. Chances are we won't
hear anything fit to print.
Now honestly, Gen. Porter, which of
the numerous J. P. J., pictures does
your find look the most like?
Ex-officials of the Agriculture De
part will soon be numerous enough to
form a club.
Those would be assassins in Russia

What the department clerks in
Washington would like would be to bo

the heigth of the thermoneter.
The benevolent Hartford Courant
wants the Japs adequately protected
at the coming peace conference. Don't
it look up-to date as though the Japs

of themselves?
Deafness Cannot be Cured.
By local applications, as they can
not reach the diseased portion of the
ear. There i.-3 only r?:ie way to cure
deafness, and that is by constitutional
remedies. Deafness is caused by an
inflamed condition of the mucous lin
ing of the Eusta :hi; a Tube. When
this tulie is inflamed vou have a rumbl
ing sound or imp ri'cct hearing, and
when it is entirely closed, Deafness is
the result, and unless t he inflammation
can bo taken out and this tube restor
ed to its normal condition, hearing
will be destroyed forever; nine cases
out often are sauaed by Catarrh, which
is nothing but an inflamed condition
of tho mucous surfaces.
We will givo One Hundred Dollars

WASHINGTON LETTER.
(Fromour Regular Correspondent.)
Washington, July'3th, 1905.
Editor Pre**:
The determination of the gov
ernment to get to the bottom of
the irregularities in the Depart
ment of Agriculture is shown by
the action of the court to-day in
the cases of the recalcitrant brok
ers Haas and Peck ham who were
subpoenaed front N. Y., to appear
before the special grand jury and
who refused to answer the ques
tions put to them. Both the brok
ers were accompanied by counsel
and refused to answer the questions
asked them first on the ground that
the court had no right to inquire
into their private business and sec
ond claiming that their answers
might incriminate them. This is
one of the last pleas that a witness
usually adopts and made it seem
more apparent to the jury that the
brokers were keeping back some
thing that might be of vital inter
est in the investigation. The at
torneys for the witnesses asked that
they might have till Monday to
pass on the question, but the court
ruled that they must answer at the
meeting of the grand jury on
Saturday. It is believed that
Judge Wright, before whom the
"hearing is being held, will direct
the witnesses to answer the ques
tions put to them or take the alter
native of going to jail. Both of
the witnesses have able counsel and
while they 011 Friday reiterated
their first decision not. to reply to
the question asked them, it is prob
able that they alter their minds
when confronted with a jail sent
ence for contempt of court.
There is another mild sensation in
the Department of Agriculture to
day by the presentation and prompt
acceptance of the resignation of
Dr. Geo. T. Moore of the Bureau
of Soils. It appears that Dr.
Moore had while connected with
the Bureau published a pamphlet
that was printed by the depart
ment on the enrichment of soils,
recommending the use of certain
nitrogenous compounds. The
compound as is the custom in any
such cases, was patented in the
name of Dr. Moore by the Depart
ment of Agriculture as a protec
tion to the farmers and assuring
the freedom of thenitro culture for
farm use. At the same time a
company known as the Nitro Cul
ture Company of West Chester,
Pa., was formed to manufacture
the compound and an offer of a
good block of stock in the company
and a liberal salary was made to
Dr. Moore for his services. Dr.
Moore communicated the offer to
the Department but his resignation
was not accepted and a raise of
salary was promised him. The
matter dragged along without the
increase of salary being granted,
and Dr. Moore's wife held the
stock in the company while Dr.
Moore continued to work in the
bureau. This state of affairs con
tinued till brought out at a hear
ing in the Department this week.
Dr. Moore promply tendered his
resignation to the Secretary of
Agriculture and it was accepted
and the whole action made public
in a statement issued by the De
partment.
The board of inquiry into the
Bennington explosion has been ap
pointed and Commodore Stevens
has been ordered south from San
Francisco for duty with the board
in order that it should be compos
ed of officers of sufficiently advanc
ed rank. The meetings of the
board will be held on the Chicago,
the flagship of the squadron.
A Touching Story.
Is the -aving from death of the baby
girl of Geo. A. Eyler, Cumberland, Md.
He writes: -At the age of 11 months,
our little girl was in declining health,
with serious Throat Trouble, and two
physicians gave lie up. We were al
most iu despair, when we resolved to try
Dr. King's New Discovery for Consump
tion, Coughs and Colds. The first bottle
gave relief; after taking four bottles she
was cured, and is now in perfect health."
Never fails to relieve and cure a cough
or cold. At L. Taggart's drug store; 50c

A fat purse will swell the brainles
head.
l'ublic is Aroused.
The public is aroused to a knowledge
of the curative merits of that great med
icinal tonic. Electric Bitters, for sick
stomach, liver and kidneys. Mary li.
Walters, of 54(5 St Clair Ave., Colum
bus. ()., writes: For several months, I
was given up to die. I had fever and
ague, my nerves were wrecked; I could
not sleep, and my stomach was .10 weak,
from useless doctors' drugs, that I could
not cat. Soon after beginning to take
Electric Bitters, I obtained relief,
and in a short time I was
entirely cured " Guaranteed at L. Tag

Before the discovery of Hyoniei the
only ndvjce a physician could "j;ive his
liav fever patients, was togo away
from home, hut now anyone who is sub
ject to this disease can, if used, stay at
homo without fear of the annual attack
ot s-neezing, watery eyes, and other dis
comfoi ts.
J. F. Forbes, a well known Western
railroad man, whose home is at McCook,
Nebraska, writes '•! have never had any
relief from hay fever, even temporarily,
until 1 discovered the merits of Hyomei.
1 always recommend it when occasion re
quires."
There is no offensive or dangerous
stomach dosing when Hyomei is used.
This reliable remedy for the cure of all
diseases of the respiratory organs is
breathed through a neat pocket inhaler
that comes with every outfit, so that the
air taken into the throat and lungs is like
that of the White Mountains or other
health resorts, where hay fever is uu
known.
The fact that L. Taggart agrees to re
fund the money to any hay fever suffer
er who use* Hyomei without success,
should inspire confidence in its power to
effect a cure. A complete outfit costs
only 81.00 and extra bottles but 50 cents.
As age creeps on a man generally
"rows fat, while his hair grows thin.
Dangerous and Uncertain.
For sunburn, tetter and all skin and
scalp diseases, DeWitt's Witch Hazel
Salve has no equal. It is a certain cure
for blind, bleeding, itching and protrud
ing piles. It will draw tbe fire out of a
burn and heal without leaving a scar.
Boils, old sores, carbuncles, etc., are
quickly cured by the use of the genuine
l)e Witt's Witch Hazel Salve. Accept no
substitute as they are dangerous and un
certain. Sold by R. (J. Dodson.
It isn't every fellow who is out of the

The Only Way,
There is no way to maintain the health
and strength ot mind and body except by
nourishment. There is no way to nourish
except through the stomach. The stom
ach must be kept healthy, pure and
sweet or the strength will be let down and
disease will set up. No appetite, loss ot
strength, nervousness, headache, consti
pation, bad breath, sour risings, rifting,
indigestion, dyspepsia and all stomach
troubles that are cureable are quickly

Fiendish Suffering.
Is often caused by sores, ulcers and can
