throw only a 1,700 pound projectile,
our lot* ton throws one of 2,000 pounds,
and the 110 ton throws an 1,800 pound
shot with a high velocity.
The stone shot of Mohammed's
guns varied between twenty and thir
ty-two inches in diameter, about the
height of a dining table, 2,5,14 of them (
fired ou this occasion weighing, ac
cording to a calculation of General I
Lefroy's, about 1,000 tons, and were
cut out of the solid rock on the spot.
Assuming twenty-four inches as the 1
average diameter of the shot fired at
the siege, the total area of the surface
dressed was nearly 32,000 square feet.
At this siege the weight of the powder
flred is estimated by General Lefroy
to have been 250 tons. At the siege of
Rhodes in 1480 Mohammed caused six
teen basilisks or double cannon to be
cast on the spot, throwing balls two to
three feet in diameter.—Chambers'

WHEN A MAN STARVES.
How It IVPIH to fio Without Food
I'or Sfvtu l)aj».
For tht> first two days through which
a strong and healthy man is (loomed to
exist upon nothing his sufferings are
perhaps more acute than in the remain
ing stages; lie feels an inordinate, un
speakable era vilig at the stomach night
and day. The inintl runs upon beef,
bread and other substances, but still In
a great measure the body retains its
strength. On the third and fourth days,
bnt especially on the fourth, tills inces- i
sant craving gives place to a sinking
and weakness of the stomach, acconi- |
panied by nausea.
On the lifth day his cheeks appear '
hollow and sunken, his body attenu- i
ated; ids color la ashy pale and ids eyes i
wild, glassy and cannibalistic.
The sixth day brings with it increaa- i
ed suffering, although the pangs of
hunger are lost in an overpowering 1
languor and sickness. The head be- j
conies dizzy; the ghosts of well reniem- i
bered dinners pass in hideous proces- !
sion through the mind.
The seventh day comes, bringing in
creasing lassitude and further prostra
tion of strength. The mind wanders.—
