W. H. Howard and wife left on Sun
day Flyer to visit in Philadelphia and
New York.
Albert Bair and W. G. Bair went to
Buffalo yesterday to close up their
bother's affairs.
Mr. Anson Mason, of Sterling Run,
was guest of Mr. Ed. Morse and family
on Wednesday.
Mrs. Daniel Gillis, of Austin, was
the guest of her cousin, Mrs. Ed.
Morse, on Monday.
Floyd Barton left this morning for
Ridgway hospital where he will under
go an operation for his eyes.
John Catlin,wife and son of Renovo,
were visiting their many friends in
town Monday and Tuesday.
Ed. V. Walker, of Ashtola, Somerset
county, Pa., visited several days last
week with S. E. Huff and family.
William Craven writes the PRESS

the long green for news from home.
Herbert Olmsted who is one of Elk
Tanning Company's busy men was in
town over Sunday to visit his parents.
Ex-Sheriff Alonzo Bailey was in
town on Monday and Tuesday, attend
ing court and shaking hands with old
friends.
Miss Daisy Cladius, who is employed
in W. 11. Cramer's store, at this place,
has returned from visiting her parents
at Wiliiamsport.
We had the pleasure of shaking hands
with Geo. P. Jones, last Sunday, ho
having come up to spend a few hours
with wife and son.
Arthur Cote, an old friend of the
editor, from Emporium, Penna., was a
very welcome caller at this office Mon

Chas. Barr, one of Shippen town
ship's most industrious farmers was a
welcome caller at this office on Tues
day and made us feel happy with the
"long green."
Mr. G. S. Piper, one of our esteemed
and prompt paying subscribers was a
PRESS visitor Tuesday evening. Mr.
Piper is an honest industrious citizen
and believes in keeping square with
the world.
Dr. E. O. Bard well had so far re
covered from his serious illness on
Monday, that he ventured a trip to
Ridgway.
Misse.s Ritchie, Blumle and Garrity
attended the swell reception given by
the Hermitage Club at St. Marys, last
Wednesday.—Gazette.
Charles Russell, a brother of the late
Wilbur and Allen Russell, died at
Russell Hill, Pa., one day last week.
He was well known here.
David S. Logue, of Gibson, while
iooking around town on Tuesday
dropped into chat with the PRESS,
which he is always sure to do. Call
often friend Logue—the latch string is
always out.
Hon. John McDonald, while attend
ing to his duties as Associate Judge, on
Monday and Tuesday, entertained ye
PRESS editor and Mr. R. R. McQuay
Monday evening. The Judge, who is
one of the most practical railroad men
in the employ of P. R. R , having been
identified with the Pennsy and Read
ing system since a young man. _ Mr.
McDonald is an entertaining visitor
and is full of pleasant incidents con
nected with early days in railroading
in this state. He is just as popular
and as careful in the discharge of his
duties as Associate Judge-as he is its
Supervisor of Middle Division. The
people made no mistake when they
elected him.
Mrs. Thos. Waddington returned
last week from visiting friends in
Canada.
Mrs. M. B..Judd, who has been quite
sick, at the residence of her daughter,
Mrs. J. D. Logan, for several days, is
improving, we are pleased to note.
On Sunday Mr. Geo. Burkhart re
ceived the sad intelligence of the
death of Lena Sprout, formerly of this
place, but now of Picture Rocks.

The P. R. R., $75,000 union depot at
Harrishurg was destroyed by fire Tues
day night, delaying trains several
hours. The extensive improvements
had just been completed.
Miss Bessie McCaslin's Sunday school
class will hold a bread and cake sale in
basement of new Presbyterian church
next Saturday afternoon, April 30th
The public is cordially invited.
J. L. Cook's funeral, whose death we
mentioned last week, was largely at
tended at Waterford last Saturday. A
long, active life of 94 year* closed with
the respect and esteem of his neigh
bors.
Last Saturday a fire started in James
O'Day's kitchen, doing considerable
damage to the building. The entire
department was called out and soon
drowned the fire. Fire gets little head
way in this town if the fire laddies
know it.
While passing aloni; East Fifth
street, last Monday, we notice that .Mrs.
John M. Olson has laborers at work
excavating for another residence on
her lots. If many others would follow
her example there would not be such a
scarcity of houses in Emporium.
Among ihe strangers who were in
town during the fore part of the week
for the funeral of the late Jerry Nolan
were Mr. and Mrs. E. M. MeNerney,
of Sizerville, Mr. J. J. MeNerney, from
Clearfield; Mr. and Mrs. Michael
Murphy, ofEmporium; Mr. and Mrs.
Michael Conley, of Snow Shoe; Mrs.
Victoria Temple, of Pittsburg; Mrs.
Kathryn Lambert, of Pittsburg; Mr.
Edward Walker and daughter, of

Ridgway Loses a Fine Nurse.
Mrs. Prances Decker, a well-known
and popular lady who has been fol
lowing her profession as a trained
nurse in this place for a number of
years, has decided to give up her
work here and accept a position as
housekeeper for her only brother, who
resides at Emporium, Cameron county,
and who lost his wife by death a few
weeks ago Mrs. Decker seems very
reluctant to leave her work here,
where she has done so much good, and
has been so much appreciated, but she
feels that her duty calls her away.
Mrs. Decker's daughter, Miss Macy
Decker, will go with her mother to
Emporium to make her future home.
Their many friends will join with us in
wishing them health and happiness in

struction of a Hose House, to be constructed on
the site of the one recently destroyed by fire, in
