Timber Lands Absorbed.
WILLIAMS PORT, June 2. —The larges
lumber company in the state has just
been organized here with C. S. Horton
as president. It is the Central Penn
sylvania Lumber company, which has
acquired by purchase all the timber
land, of the Penn, Elk and Union com
panies, representing several hundred
thousand acres in Central and North
western Pennsylvania. The capital
stock of the concern is §20,000 000.
There is timber enough to furnish
sawing for 15 years. The purchase
covers six mills located at Jamison
City, Laquin, Gray's Run, Tiadaghton,
Lestonia and Loleta, and this number
will probably be increased by opera
tions at other points. The company
has control of 200 miles of railroad.
Ihe Late L. R. (ileason.
The following from the Wellsboro
Advocate, is a brief outline of the busi
ness career of the late L. R Gleason,
so well and favorably known in this
county, especially at Driftwood and
Medix Run, where he has been inter
ested in business:
"Readers of this paper will recall a
mention in the preceding issue of this
paper of the death of L. R Gleason, of
Canton, who died May 19, aged 73
years. He was born in Button, War
ren county, N. Y., Nov. 16, 1829, and
came to Pennsylvania with his parents
in 1840. At sixteen worked in the
Blossburg mines. At nineteen com
menced lumbering in the Pine Creek
region. Married Martha Irvin, of
Union, Tioga county, who died in 1880.
In 1881 he married Mrs. Elizabeth
Clark, of Canton, a sister of Judge
John b Mitchell, of Wellsboro. He
worked in the lumber woods as laborer,
superintendent and contractor until
1868, when he formed a partnership
with his brother-in-law, William Irvin,
in the tannery business at Canton, In
1881 they enlarged their business,
building a large tannery at what is
now Gleasonton, Clinton county. In
1887 he bought out his partner's in
terest, taking his live sons into busi
ness with him under the iirm name of
L. R. Gleason & Sons. In 1889 they
buiit the Crescent tannery at Drift
wood, Cameron county, and in 1895
the Cold Spring at Medix Run, in Elk
count}'. The five boys are all practical
tanners and have charge ot the differ
ent plants. The home plant at Canton
is in the firm name of Gleason & Clark,
he having taken into partnership his
two stepsons J. Fred and H. Lee Clark.
His Last Hope Realized.
fFrorn the Sentinel, Globe, Mont.)
lo the first opening of Oklahoma fo
settlers in 18S9, the eiiitor of this paper
was among the many seekers after for
tune who made the big race one fine dav
in April. During his traveling about
and afterwards his eauiping upon his
claim, he encountered much bad water,
which together with the severe heat,
gave him a very severe diarrhoea which
it seemed almost impossible to cheek, and
along in June the case became bad he ex
pected to die. One day one of his neigh
bors brought him one small bottle of
Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera and Diar
rhoea Remedy as a last hope. A big
dose was given him while he was rolling
about on the ground in great agony, and
in a few minutes the dose was repeated.
The good effect of the medicine was
noticed and within an hour the patient
was taking his first sound sleep for a fort
night. That one little bottle worked a
complete cure, and he cannot help but
feel grateful. The season for bowel dis
orders being at hand suggests this item.
