The Office of a Teacher.
Some one lias said that the ap
pointment of a school superinten
dent may he of more consequence
to our nation's power than the pro
motion of a major general.
What can be of more importance
to civilization than the raising of
human values, the taking of crude,
ignorant lumps of human clay, and
by years of patient fashioning and
intelligent training, developing
them into educated, cultured, and
strong men?
We think it is a wonderful thing
for a sculptor to raise the value of
a rough piece of marble or granite
from a few dollars to a hundred
thousand dollars by calling out an
idea which would have slept in the
cold stone forever had not his genius
awakened it. But for a teacher's
fashioning hand the value of the
human block of clay would have
been but half what it is.
It is the ollice of a teacher to
raise human values; to take the
low and elevate them; to train the
ignorant, and leave them intelli
gent; to restrain the impetuous and
self-willed, and shape them into
self-controlled, polished, beautiful
characters.—' 'Success.''
No Cloud on the Horizon.
P.ttsburg Commercial.
Those persons who imagined they
saw the end of this era of prosperity
foreshadowed in decreasing exports
last spring will have to guess again.
The movement during the closing
months of last year altered the rec
ord and put 1902 at the top of the
list of export years. The imports
were also very large, but the bal
ance continues in favor of the Unit
ed States. Along the same lines
are the reports of American Con
suls abroad, which are being com
piled for the annual government
publication, "Commercial Rela
tions."' Mr. Emory, in charge of
the matter, says the reports are all
of one tenor, that American ex
ports of manufactures will continue
to increase. The cause is not
wholly to be found inthecheapness
of American products, but more in
their excellence. American ma
chinery is superior in every re
spect, and is especially popular on
account of its lightness and the ad
vantage of being readily able to
procure duplicate parts. Ameri
can agricultural products are nec
essarily in demand abroad, so that,
as far as the export out look is con
cerned. there is not a cloud on the
horizon.

CAMERON COUNTY PRESS, THURSDAY, JANUARY 29, 1903.
Her Partner Was Her Pall Bearer.
Williamsport News: A well known
and popular Williamsport young wo
man had a unique experience at a
masquerade ball Monday night. A few
months ago the young woman in ques
tion was critically ill, suffering fVora
what was supposed to be an incurable
disease. The family and her friends
had given up all hope of saving her
life, and her death was expected at any
moment. The young lady herself had
given up all hope of recovery and had
selected the persons whom she desired
to carry the casket containing her body
to the grave. It was at this juncture
that someone suggested to the young
woman's mother that she secure the
services of a consumptive specialist.
The suggestion was acted upon and
under the treatment the young woman
rapidly recovered. The cure attracted
widespread attention and was much
commented upon at the time.
And here comes the unique part of
the story. The young lady, comple
tely restored to her health, was among
a large number who attended a mas
querade ball last night at Montours
ville and was among the gayest of the
gay throng. When the order to un
mask was given, however, she was
somewhat startled to discover that
the partner with whom she had been
dancing was one of the young men
whom a few months ago she had elect
ed to act as a pall bearer. The circum
stance was noticed by a number and
regarded as a decidedly unusual inci
dent.
Domestic Troubles.

there are no domestic ruptures occasion

Tried to Conceal It.
It's the old story of "murder will out"
only in this case there's no crime. A
woman feels run down, has backache or
dyspepsia and thinks it's nothing and
tries to hide it until she finally breaks
down. Don't deceive yourself. Take
Electric Hitters at once. It has a repu
tation for curing Stomach, Liver and
Kidney troubles and will revivify your
whole system. The worst forms of those
maladies will quickly yield to the cur
ative power of Electric Bitters. Only

Pretty, but so Thin I
"Doctor," said our clerk, as
a customer went out, "that wo
man would be a beauty if she
were not so horribly thin."
" Yes," said the doctor," she
is really ill; most thin women
are ill.'*
Unusual thinness may mean
worry, extra work, care of the
sick, nervousness, dyspepsia,
bowel troubles, or the first
sign of a serious disease like
consumption.
The best thing we have found
for thin people, whatever the
cause, is Vinol.
