Search for Tribe of Chinese Jews.
A letter from Shanghi, China, to the
Philadelphia North American contains
the following remarkable information
relative to a hidden band ot Chinese
Jews. The letter says:
Deep in the heart of an interior Chi
nese province is hidden a band of
Chinese Jews. Now that peace has
been restored throughout the Flowery
Kingdom, the Jewish colony of this
city intends opening communications
with its Mongolian co-religionists in
order to establish close relations.
In has been known for some time
that such a tribe existed. Occasionally
travelers have brought from Kaifeng
Fu the news of a strange sect that did
not follow the religious teaching of
Buddha, Mohamet or Confucious, but
worshipped according to the laws of
Moses. An attempt was made to reach
them some fifty years ago, but it was
thwarted by the Tai Ping rebellion.
Again within the last three years the
Boxer insurrection brought failure to a
similar effort.
Altogether there are said to be seven
clans in the colony, with a male mem
bership of probably 140. How they
came to China, and from which of the
original tribes they descend is a prob
lem which Hebraic scholars will have to
decide.
Their present condition is deplorable
and their religious observances have
degenerated, but this is not surprising
in view of their complete isolation from
worshipers of their own faith. They
have 110 tribal leader, 110 synagogue
and no schools in which to educate
their children, but they have staunchly
insisted the influence of Buddhist and
Mohammedan neighbors, and venerate
above all things a well stone on which
is engraved the names of Moses, Abra
ham and Adam.
They have a few traditional com
mands that they remember and ob
serve. They never use heathen musical
instruments in marriage ceremonies.
They take out sinews before preparing
the meat for their food and are pro
hibited to eat pork. They did not
know until recently of the existence in
any part of the world of any Jews be
sides themselves. Their first know
ledge of their outside co-religionists
was when they received the message
which local Jews sent to them.

A Seasonable Short Story.
The most seasonable of many ex
cellent short stories in the July Mc-
Clure's (among which is an Emmy Lou
story and a Newfoundland story by
Norman Duncan), is Mary Stewart
Cutting's, "In the Married Quarters."
No more feeling picture lias ever been
drawn of the reverse side of the sum
mer vacation—the side of the husband
who remains behind—not in the city
where there are roof-gardens and res
taurants and electric fans, but in a
mosquito infested suburb, where one
is left alone to battle with the moths
and the red ants; for in this case both
cook and second girl seem also to have
fled. The remarkable part of it is that
the story should have been written by
a woman, and the whole in a spirit of
sympathy, not of satire.
The sketch is another of Mrs. Cut
ting's "Little Stories of Married Life,"
which are coming to be among the
most welcome of the various note
worthy fiction series running in Mc-
Clure's,

Sweden and The Swedes
Sweden is one of the largest
countries in Europe and more
densely populated than America.
There are seven million Swedes
scattered in different parts of the
world; of these five million still
remain in Sweden.
The number of marriages is
diminished in late years, not
because of economic conditions but
because of larger demands socially.
A child in Sweden may look for
ward to a life of 50 years, while in
England, where health conditions
are next best, a generation attains
the age of 4G years.
Sweden is now the oldest remain
ing kingdom of the civilized
countries of Europe. It has never
been subjected to foreign tyranny.
Casual tyrants it has had for short
periods only.
National property and treasury
deposits are so large, that if an
increase continues as in the past,
Sweden will soon be a rich country.
Its constitution is the only one in
Europe, with the possible exception
of England's, that has had its birth
and development in independence
a«d has not been produced because
of pressure fromforeign innovations.
There is not ahead of any nation
so beloved by its people as Oscar 11.
Others live and move surrounded
by police guard, but King Oscar
goes unattended in and out among
his people, in the streets and
market-places or out into the fields
and woods, without the slightest
fear of getting hurt by any one of
his subjects.
The parliament, or riksdag,
consists of two legislative bodies.
To one of these only rich persons,
with an annual income of at least
4,000 kronoror eligible. They pay
their own expenses and receive no
pay. The members of the other
division get their traveling expenses
paid and receive pay of 10 kronor
per day. These two bodies make
and modify all laws, which after
wards are submitted to the king
for signature.
Laws are made slowly, but they
tend to protect the interests of the
common people. In judicial
matters, a person, however poor,
has recourse to the courts, the last
being that of the king himself.
Crime and lawlessness is
diminished more and more every
year. The jails are kept in good
condition, but are so little used
that, perhaps, in the future, they
may be used for educational
purposes.
The religious conditions are very
favorable. The transition from
paganism to Christianity and later
Catholicism to Protestantism was
voluntary and conclusive. Conse
quently Christianity has taken deep
root among the people. Work
along temperance lines is also
progressing. In respect to her
public school system, Sweden is
ahead of the rest of Europe; the
quality of teaching is also univer
sally acknowledged to be foremost.
Our sloyd is known and taught to
people of many nations. (The
doctor mentioned a long list of
Spewish philosophers, scientists and
astronomers.)
Chemistry knows of seventy-five
elements; of these, twenty were
discovered by Swedes.
The tliermoneter that is used in
all countries except England and
America, where Fahrenheit is used,
and which rationally puts the
freezing point at zero and the
boiling point at 100 degrees, was
made by and named after the Swede,
Carl Celsius. Fahrenheit put the
freezing point at 32 degrees and the
boiling point at 212 degrees, but
where he got the 32 I don't
understand.
Sweden harvests annually 434
kilograms of grain per inhabitant,
Western Europe 276, and America
404. Potatoes yield annually in
Sweden 280 kilo, in America 78
and in Western Europe 307. For
one thousand inhabitants there are
in Sweden 350 milch, cows in
Western Europe 150, in America
210. Of beef cattle for the same
population there are in Sweden 100,
in Western Europe 150, in America
370.
The mining resources in Sweden
are exceptionally large. In one
place one million tons of ore per
year may be mined for (500 years
before level ground is reached and
shafts need be built# The discovery
of dynamite by a Swede has made
mining easy. An abundance of
nature water power helps the
development of all industries.
Sweden has more lines of railroad
in proportion to her population
than any other country. Its
extensive telephone system is
world-renowned. Every ten th
home has its own telephone. In
his own church in (Jefie he has a
telephone which is connected with
the central station when he preaches
his sermon on Sundays, and many
people in the city and vicinity may
sit down and listen to his sermon
inthe quiet of their own homes.—
