show the great evils resulting from the
private contract school-book system—
educational officials corrupted, school

the prices paid by the children them
selves of the highest—an annual tax
going up into tho millions which could
be very easily saved if proper organi

Colds.
To diminish excessive sensibility to
colds, says an English writer: First:
Free exposure to the open air daily,
enables the body to resist the invasion
of cold. Second: The morning cold

ture. Third: This wise man did not
know that a few doses of "77" will pre

"break up" a cold. Ac all druggists, or

The Day* V.'hi-n >[uskra<* nud Counn

Were the People'* Money, So to
Spealc, In New York. State.
The man of leisure from New York
city who had been lazing away a 1
fortnißht or so of his not particularly :
\alunble time at K.vserick, in Ulster
county, N. Y., had made up his mind
to return to his haunts in the metropo
lis and nonchtelanUy tossed the tavern
keeper a one hundred dollar note out
of which to take pay for his bill. The
landlord could not change the note.
Neither could Deacon Blimber, who
was by.
It was not until it had been sent all
about the neighborhood that any one
was found with currency enough on
hand to "break" the bill. Farmer
Beaeks had just received pay for his
season's tater crop and had change for 1
more than SIOO.
"It beats all, an' it's singular," said j
the landlord as he counted out the New I
Yorker's change, "what folks goes an' j
does with all their ready money. There 1
don't seem to be 110 currency no more— 1
no currency a-clrculatin' at all."
This seemed to be Deacon Blimber's ;
opportunity.
"You orto ben here, then," said he, \
"when my folks settled, somethin' like I
seventy-five years an' more ago. There !
was currency enough then, I want to j
tell ye. It wa'n't silver, though. Nor j
it wa'n't gold. Nor it wa'n't paper. It j
was pelts.
"The circ'latin' mejum o' the deestric
in them days run from muskrat clean
up to b'ar. There was minks an' there
was otters, an' the man that could
manage to harvest plenty o' them crit
ters was the man that stood way up j
in the money market. But it wa'n't ev- :
cry one that could gether in minks an'
otters, an' so muskrats an' coons au' j
foxes an' wolves an' b'ars was the real
circ'latin' mejum in them days.
"Minks au' otters was what you j
mowt call gover'ment bonds. Muskrats j
an' coons an' foxes an' wolves an' b'ars 1
was the people's money, so to speak. \
If you went to the tavern an' planked j
down your muskrat skin, you'd git your
snifter o' rum and tanzy, but you j
wouldn't git no change. If you planked
down a coonskin, though, you'd git
your snifter an' two muskrat skins
change.
"A feller that went in with a coon
skin he was tol'able well fixed, bat
with a foxskiu or a wolfskin he could j
shop around quite some. A man with !
a b'arskin—oh, well! Nobody didn't ask I
110 questions about a man that had a
b'arskin with him when he weut trad- [
in'!
"It didn't seem pertie'lar queer in \
them days the way things was run ou |
that pelt currency, but I've an idee it'd ;
strike folks a lectio sing'lar nowadays. J
rs to me I'd have to snort out ;
i:ui;,hin' my own self if a feller should j
come to me an' say:
" 'Deacon, I'm a leetle financially em- j
barrasscd today. Ken you lend me a
foxskiu for a couple o' days or soV
"That surely would make me snicker j
if I I'.eerd it now. An' to hear some
shoppin' goiu' on today like I use to !
hear it many a time I bet would set |
1110 to gigglin' like all possessed. Some- j
thin' like this, for instance, over yender :
to Uncle Sile's store:
"'How much for thein air cowskin :
boots. Uncle Sile?'
" 'Tin mV Why, a fox an' a coon.' j
" 'Leetle high, Siias. Can't stan' it 1
Give you three coons fer 'em.'
" 'Xo. Can't be did nohow. Best I
ken u - is three coons an' a muskrat.' j
"That'd be funnier to me than a nig- j
ger show now. An' somethin' like this j
would bu'st my buttons, I know it !
wou id:
"'Deacon, ken you give me change i
fer a wolf V
" 'Yes, but I'll have to give you all
muskrats.'
"P.ut we didn't think nothin' o' it in i
them days, 'cause it was reg'lnr busi- !
ness. That circ'latin' mejum was a Ice- j
tie onhandy in one way. though. Polks ;
had to carry their currency around in j
a bushel bag if they was out to do !
much cash business, an' if they was I
b'arskin men, why, Judas preach in',
they had to carry it in a wagon.
"But tliem days o' pelt currency was
the good old days, I tell you. Still," said
the deacon after a pause, "I dunno but
I ken manage to slide along jest as j
cheerful iu these days o' gold an' silver j
an' paper currency, even though it is
all' pervadin' ekeerce." New York j

Tauten Differ.
People have different tastes. Do not J
grumble at your neighbor because he
does not accept your opinions and
does not like your amusements. The
writer of this does not like football,
and a party of students 011 the streets
giving a "yell" annoys him, but other
people like football, and we are willing
to stand the "yell" and football, it is
foolish to condemn a man because his
ideas do not agree with yours.—Atchi
