An article which will prove of the widest interest to all thoso engaged in teaching or who may be interested in education, is one in the January Cos mopolitan by Elisha Benjamin An drews, ex-Prosident of Brown Univer sity, who for the first time, in a lead ing magazine, has had the courage to show the great evils resulting from the private contract school-book system— educational officials corrupted, school books often the poorest selected, and the prices paid by the children them selves of the highest—an annual tax going up into tho millions which could be very easily saved if proper organi zation were brought into this effort. The Day* V.'hi-n >[uskra<* nud Counn and Poif« and Wolves and Bear* Were the People'* Money, So to Spealc, In New York. State. The man of leisure from New York city who had been lazing away a 1 fortnißht or so of his not particularly : \alunble time at K.vserick, in Ulster county, N. Y., had made up his mind to return to his haunts in the metropo lis and nonchtelanUy tossed the tavern keeper a one hundred dollar note out of which to take pay for his bill. The landlord could not change the note. Neither could Deacon Blimber, who was by. It was not until it had been sent all about the neighborhood that any one was found with currency enough on hand to "break" the bill. Farmer Beaeks had just received pay for his season's tater crop and had change for 1 more than SIOO. "It beats all, an' it's singular," said j the landlord as he counted out the New I Yorker's change, "what folks goes an' j does with all their ready money. There 1 don't seem to be 110 currency no more— 1 no currency a-clrculatin' at all." This seemed to be Deacon Blimber's ; opportunity. "You orto ben here, then," said he, \ "when my folks settled, somethin' like I seventy-five years an' more ago. There ! was currency enough then, I want to j tell ye. It wa'n't silver, though. Nor j it wa'n't gold. Nor it wa'n't paper. It j was pelts. "The circ'latin' mejum o' the deestric in them days run from muskrat clean up to b'ar. But it wa'n't ev- : cry one that could gether in minks an' otters, an' so muskrats an' coons au' j foxes an' wolves an' b'ars was the real circ'latin' mejum in them days. "Minks au' otters was what you j mowt call gover'ment bonds. Muskrats j an' coons an' foxes an' wolves an' b'ars 1 was the people's money, so to speak. \ If you went to the tavern an' planked j down your muskrat skin, you'd git your snifter o' rum and tanzy, but you j wouldn't git no change. If you planked down a coonskin, though, you'd git your snifter an' two muskrat skins change. "A feller that went in with a coon skin he was tol'able well fixed, bat with a foxskiu or a wolfskin he could j shop around quite some. A man with ! a b'arskin—oh, well! An' somethin' like this j would bu'st my buttons, I know it ! wou id: "'Deacon, ken you give me change i fer a wolf V " 'Yes, but I'll have to give you all muskrats.' "P.ut we didn't think nothin' o' it in i them days, 'cause it was reg'lnr busi- ! ness. That circ'latin' mejum was a Ice- j tie onhandy in one way. though.
