Death of Hon. (ieo. R flcCrea. [Henovo News.j The Hon. George R. McCrea passed away this morning at 6 o'clock at his residence on Ontario avenue, after suf fering for the past two years with a complication of diseases. Seldom has a death in our midst caused more sor row. Mr. McCrea was a gentleman universally beloved and the shock of his demise, even though expected, will not soon be forgotten. For the past two months Mr. Mc- Crea's condition had been most serious. The best medical advice in the State was consulted and all that was known to science applied, but without avail. He bore his sufferings calmly, patiently and even cheerfully. Mr. McCrea was born at Hollidays burg, Blair county, Pa., February 14, 1849, and was therefore in the fifty-sec ond year of his age. The family later moved to Altoona. Mr. McCrea attend ed the pnblic schools of that city and later graduated from the high school In 1863 Mr. McCrea became an ap prentice in the Baldwin locomotive works of Philadelphia, where he re mained four years learning the mould ing trade. In 1867 he first came to Renovo and remained here five years. Later he went to Pittsburg and thence to Canada but returned to Renovo in 1878 and sinco then has been one of our most honored and highly respected cit izens. Mr. McCrea worked for some time in the foundry and was one of the most skilled mechanics in the shops. Later he embarked in the mercantile business, in which he wasstill engaged. He also went into the oil business, Tiona, War ren county, Pa., in 1888 and was inter ested with several other gentlemen in that business up to the time of his death. Politically Mr. McCrea wan always a Republican. He was first elected a member of Renovo council in 1880 and served for three years. He became a candidate for county treasurer against Wallace Gakle in 1884 but was defeated by a majority of 234 votes. In 1887 he ran against D. M. May for sheriff and was again defeated. On May 7, 1890 he was appointed associate judge of this county by Governor Beaver, to fill out the unexpired term of Judge W. K. Chesnutt, who had resigned. In the fall of 1890 Mr. McCrea ran for the of fice but was once more defeated. Later ho ran for county treasurer and was elected by a splendid majority. He made one of the best treasurers the county ever had. Mr. McCrea was always closely con nected with the business interests of the town. He was a prominent secret so ciety man. He was a charter member of Washington Camp No. 88, P. O. S.of A., a member of Renovo Lodge No. .595, Dexter Encampment and No. 163 I. O. O. F. He was a charter member of Renovo Lodge No. 595 F. & A. M.and past master of the order. He was also a member of the B. P. O. Elks. He was a past high priest in Lafayette Chapter No. 163, Royal Arch Masons, and past commander of Hospitaller commandery No. 46, Knights Templar. He was for several years district deputy grand master Mason for the counties of Clin ton, Cameron and Elk. Ho was also a thirty-third degree member of Philadel phia consistory A. & A. S., R. F. M , and a member of LuLu Temple, Nobles of the Mystic Shrine. The family's loss in Mr. McCrea is a common loss to all. He had not an enemy in the world. Ever ready to lend a helping hand to those in distress Mr. McCrea was the personification ot the golden rule. Whatever he under took to do he did well and most con scientiously. His life was a busy one. Mr. McCrea was not a married man. He is survived by three brothers, Will iam, Robert and Charles, all of Renovo. His parents preceded him to the grave several years ago.
