ford has ordered 100 coal cars.
The Central of New Jersey is in the
market for 26 passenger cars and for
some freight cars.
The Erie is in the market for 30 pas
senger coaches.
The Missouri Pacific has ordered
1,000 coal cars.
The Plant system has ordered 160 box
cars and 50 flat cars.
The Colorado Springs & Cripple
Creek District has ordered 50 coal, 25
fiat and 125 stock cars.
The Kansas, Fort Scott & Memphis
has ordered 400 coal cars.
The Lake Shore has ordered 500 steel
cars and 500 wooden cars. The road is
getting prices on 200 furniture cars.
The Seaboard Air Line is in the mar
ket for 20 passenger and five express
cars.
The Union Pacific, it is reported, will
increase its order for engines.
The Boston & Maine is considering
placing an order for more locomotives,
including 10 of the consolidation type.
The Seaboard Air Line has ordered
10 switching engines and is in the mar
ket for more locomotives.
The Delaware, Lackawanna & West
ern has ordered a large number of loco
motives. The number has not been
given out officially, but we believe be

A scientific man in Rome has just
been conducting a very practical ex
periment. All this time, since the long
Bkirt came into fashion, doctors have
been talking microbes, and warning
women of their evil ways. But has any
one thought to put a gown under a
microscope and give visible proof of
the truth of what he has been saying ?
Not a soul except this learned scientist
in Rome. He employed three young
women to take their long skirts out on
a microbe-collectingexpedition. When
they returned, after doing their duty
thoroughly and well, he took the three
garments to his laboratory and gave
them a searching investigation. He
found all the microbes of the streets.
The result was horrible to relate. Al
lied in force, the microbes of those three
skirts were found to be sufficient to
contaminate the whole population of
China, and it is more than 450,000,000.
Yet the number of these microbes were
no greater than eaeh of us bring into
the house every time we go out in that
article of attire with death in its train.
The wonder is that we manage to live
