HELP FOR THE STRICKEN.
An Earnest Appeal for Contributions In Aid of
the Victims ol the Terrible Hurri
cane at Porto Rico.
A stirring appeal has been made to the people
at large by the U. S. Secretary of War for contri
butions, prompt and generous, in aid of the
thousands of sufferers left homeless and in starv
ation by the recent disastrous hurricane which
swept over Porto Rico. Accurate reports state
that several thousand human lives were lost,
hundreds of thousands of once happy homes
were destroyed, crops wero everywdere utterly
ruined and many thousands of human beings are
literally starving for want of food. Hungry,
houseless, with scarcely any clothing left to |
cover their nakedness, the unfortunate survivors
are, we learn by telegraphic advices, threatened
with the additional horrors of a pleague. Crowds
of women, old men and helpless little ones are
encountered on every hand piteously begging for
food and shelter.
Over ninety per cent, of the houses have been
demolished and in many places the furious onset
of the sea has swept away almost every vestige Of
flourishing little towns and villages. From
Adjuntas, (Juayamas, Zabucoa. Mayaguez, Mau
nabo, Arroyo and other localities the loss of life
has been apalling and the cries for help are
pitiful and heart-rending. In one district alone.
Utuado, over two thousand persons perished,
and, as in other southern towns, those who have
escaped with their lives are in want.
Mayor Samuel H. Ashbridge and the Citizens'
Permanent Relief Committee of Philadelphia,
have organized a Citizens' Porto Rico Relief
Fund, and our readers are asked to contribute to
it and to send their contributions either to
Hon. Samuel H. Ashbridge, Mayor ofPhiladel-
Pliia, or to Messrs. Drexel & Co., Treasurers,
orto Rico Relief Fund. sth and Chestnut streets,
Philadelphia.
TheU. S. Secretary of War, has assigned the
U. S. Auxilliary Cruiser "Panther" to Philadel
phia. troni which port she will sail loaded with
the food, etc., donated by the big-hearted men,
women and children of Pennsylvania who have
never failed to respond, heartily and liberally to
the appeal of the distressed.
All contributions of money, however small,
will be gladly received and publicly acknowledged.

Pennsylvania Railroad Company's low
rate excursion of the season from Erie,
Lock Haven, and intermediate points,
and from Bellefonte to Atlantic City,

Avalon, Anglesea, Wildwood or Ilolly
Beach.
Excursion tickets, good to return by
regular trains within fifteen days, will
be sold at very low rates. Tickets to
Atlantic City will be sold via the Dela
ware River Bridge Route, the only all
rail line, or via Market Street Wharf,
Philadelphia.
Stop over can be had at Philadelphia,
either going or returning, within limit
of ticket, provided ticket is deposited
with agent at Broad Street Station im

NATIONAL EXPORT EXPOSiTION, AT
PHILADELPHIA.
Reduced Rates Via the Pennsylvania
Railroad.
The National Export Exposition,
which opens at Philadelphia on Sep
tember 14 and continues uutil Novem
ber 30, will be the most interesting and
important event occurring in Philadel
phia since the Centennial Exhibition of
1876. In addition to its valuable com
mercial exhibits it will present many
features of popular interest and amuse
ment. The United States Marine Band,
Sousa's Band, the Banda Rossa, Innes'
Band, Damrosch's Orchestra, and other
celebrated bands will furnish music
alternately, and a Midway Plaisance,
equal if not superior to the famous
World's Fair Midway at Chicago, and
comprising a Chinese Village, a Chi
nese Theatre, acrobats and customs; an
Oriental Village, London Ghoßt Show,
Hagenback's Wild Animal Show, Blar
ney Castle, and many other unique
presentations, will furnish abundant
and diversified amusement. Arrange
ments have also been made for Mando
lin, Guitar and Banjo Concerts, and for
a grand choruß from the German Sing
ing Societies.
For this occasion the Pennsylvania
Railroad Company will sell excursion
tickets from all points on its line, to
Philadelphia and return, at rate of a
fare and a third for the round trip plus
price of admissiou. These tickets will
be sold during the continuance of the
Exposition and will be good for return
passage until November 30.
