The men who were working at the ruins suffered a great deal from the cold and, noticing this, Miss Gould provided a lunch room in her home, where the workers could get bread, meat and coffee whenever they wished. By Tuesday night no less than 300 hundred loaves of bread had been used, and the other food has been disposed of in proportionate quantities. An interesting story is told in this connection concerning an inter view between Miss Gould and one of the inspectors of the department of buildings. He went into Miss Gould's home on Monday, it is said, and told her that she ought not to give the laborers anything to eat, us it kept them from their work. The answer was that the food was there to be eaten and that the men could have it as long as they chose to come.
