CAMERON COUNTY PRESS, THURSDAY, JANUARY 26. iSyy.
Local Institute.
The local institute held at Sterling
Run, Jan. 21, was a success. The day
started in tine and the morning train
from each direction brought a good
representation of teachers. The insti
tute was opened with devotional ex
ercises by Rev. Piper, of Sinneraahon
ing. Rev. Ebersole being absent, Rev.
Piper delivered the address of welcome
in his usual pleasing way, dwelling
upon the importance of the position of
the teachers among his fellow men.
Prof. StoufTer took the next period
and delivered a very interesting and
instructive talk on School Hygiene,
showing among other things the im
portance of school architecture and
proper ventilation. A number of short
talks by different teachers followed on
the subject of Hygiene
Supt. Miss Collins then gave a very
interesting discussion on Geography,
followed by a general discussion ol
Geography by institute.
The institute then adjourned until
1:15.
The afternoon session was opened by
a song entitled "Scattering Precious
Seed." Mr. B. E. Woodward, of Drift
wood, then gave a talk on History,
dwelling upon the importance of hav
ing the pupils appreciate the motives
that actuated men in the early part ol
our history, also the importance ol
biographical study. His discussion
was followed by remarks on History
by Messrs. Hart, Wyley, Stouffer and
others.
Miss VanValkenburg gave a very
interesting talk 011 Grammar ant
Rhetoric.
Mr J. C. Hart next gave a talk or
Helps, which interested the audience
very much.
Miss Minnie Brooks read a very good
paper 011 "Observations in the Reading
Class," which lead to a number 01
talks on reading.
Mr. U. B. Peterson closed the insti
tute by thanking the teachers foi
responding so well to all calls upor
them, made by him, as chairman.
The people* of Sterling Run made
every endeavor to have the teachers
enjoy themselves and we hope thai
they went away feeling that they wen
benefitted by having visited our town
