In answer to a letter from the De partment of Public Instruction, the Attorney-General's Department rules that school boards have authority to j assess and levy taxes for school pur- I poses upon real eitate and personal : property in the manner heretofore provided, and to assess an occupation or per capita tax of §1 upon every male inhabitant of the age of 21 years and upwards. This per capita tax is in lieu of the occupation tax levied under the old law, and the amount thereof cannot be exceeded in any case 110 matter at what sum the occupation, trade or profession may have beerj valued by the assessor for State and county purposes.
