EDITORIAL COriMENT.
Remember that the Cuban war
resolutions were passed by Re
publican votes and that the only
votes east against tliein in the
Senate were given by Democrats,
Populists ancl "Silver Republi
cans."
The Dinglcy law continues to do
its duty in the face of the disquiet
ing war lalk, which must affect
importations. The receipts of the
Treasury Department during April
up to the present time have aver
aged more than a million dollars a
day.
Any foreigner who wants to hit
the American nail on the head now
has ample opportunity to do so.
Recent ligures of the Treasury
Department show that American
nails, the product of American
factories, are going to all parts of
the world, getting as far south as
Patagonia and South Africa, and
finding purchasers in every direc
tion.
Wheat is selling in the New
York markets at 81.0!). On the
day thatMeK iniey was inaugurated
it sold in New York at 03 § cents.
Ontheday of MeKinley'selection it
was sr»v cents. At the date of
Bryan's nomination, it: was 04!
cents. Two years after Cleveland's
inauguration, it was 58 j cents, and
in October of 1804, just after (he
adoption of the Wilson tariff, it
was 1 ■'{ cents per bushel, just half
its present price.
The recent purchase by the <«ov
erament of live large vessels, built
at Newport News, Virginia, is
another evidence of the growing
industrial and manufacturing con
ditions in the South, and helps to
explain the marked change in pub
lic sentiment in that section, which
is illustrated by the vote the
! )ingley protect i ve tariff bill received
and the large number of votes in
both Senate and House, from that
section, coining from Democrats
and Populists, as well as Republi
can members.
Every minute since the destruc
tion of the Maine has been precious
to those who are preparing for war.
The cry in Congress and out of
Congress for years has been that
the United States was absolutely
unprepared for war both as to
its navy and its coast defenses and
those familiar with the situation
recognize the wisdom of the Presi
dent's course in refusing to accede
to the demand for instant action
until such steps could be taken as
to put the Government and the
country upon a war footing.
The money in circulation in the
United States to-day is 8240,000,-
000 greater than when the Demo
cratic convention of 1800 demanded
the free coinage of silver in order
to increase the money in circula
tion. A part of this increase comes
from tli" coinage of our own mints,
which have, since July 1, ISQO,
coined §11:5,448,0H0 of gold, while
the imports of gold (coin and bul
lion) in excess of the exports, have
amounted during that time to over
one hundred million dollars.
