Tug; Gaao - rit.—Much interest has been excited in
this, to us; novel instrument of death, by the recent
execution of Lopez. Though often described, an
other explanation may nut be amiss. The victim is
treated upon a stool, behind which is an upright,
smart% hat like the head rest of a intberil chair.—
through this runs a screw, cut very "rank," which
also i asses through an iron collar. The ratter is
placed around the prisoner's neck; a single turn of
the screw, by means of a lever at , its outer end,
tightens the collar, and the inner extremity, press
ing uph the spud column, dislocates it iii.tantly.
Death is, of course, ttnmediate. The execution by
the "garote" is only inflicted in cases when the
crime is thought to desert e an ignominious punish
ment. Shooting is often resorted to, but hanging,
we believe, never, either in §pain or Cuba.—Beffis
