Everybody has heard, or ought to, of the celebrated
"Oak Hall" Clothing establishment, in Boston. It is
one of the most extensive in the United States, it not in
he world, and it owes its celebrity, and its extensive run
f custom, almost entirely to the liberal manner its pro=
'prietor. G. IV. Simmons. has patronized the press by
advertising. He knows the secret of success, and has
not serypled to use it. Tho following description of the
establishment will not bo uninteresting to the general
reader, showing as it does the manner they do business
in that "down east village of Boating:"
and Pitts-
A Model Clothing Establishment. Thero is in Boston
one.of the largest establishments for the manufacture of
clothes in the United States. We allude to Gannon
W. Simmoss's "Oak Hull Rotunda," as it is termed by
its enterprising proprietor. Some idea of its extent may
be gathered.from the fact, that the sales unionist to half a
million dollars per annum, and that. there aro employed
in the manufacture 25 fashionable cutters and trimmers.
2 book-keepers, 1 cashier and assistant, 1 paymaster. 5
runners. 2 expresses, 30 salesmen, and 3000 operatives
constantly plying the needle. The Boston Post furnish
es the followi tg description of this mammoth concern:
Mr. George V. Simmons, of Oak Ball, has marked
the season by making a most important improvement in
his vast establishment. Ho has added a spacious and
lofty rotunda in the rear of the largo sales rooms on Ann
street. This rotunda is also for a clothes mart,, and is
well worthy of a description, and should be visited as an
object of interest by those who are anxious in observing
how the trade of Boston in the clothing branch is rapidly
increasing. ThedirnensionsofYherotunda are 50 feet
by 47, giving nn area of 2350. feet on the basement Door,
and tho depth from the contra of .tho . splendid variega
ted sky-light to the floor is 65 feet. Tho light is 20 feet
by 13, and the stained glass is of the most beautiful pat
tern. The Main saloon; open from the first raised fluor
to the stucco work coining, and filled with a flood of
light from above and on every side, is - in ffct divided in
to two apartments, by means of a gallery of oak, with an
eleganhiron balustrade. The, gallery is reached by a
short flight of stairs, which branch olfinto a pair. turning
to the right and left on the avast side. Above the base
ment portion the form is elliptic. On the fist floor there
are two elliptic counters, with room on each for nine sales
men to wait on customers at ease—making eighteen in
all at the counters; and around the counters aro shelves
fur 8:100 articles of clothing. In the intervals are rum
small rcoms, or lighted closets, fur assorted made-up
clothing. Between the counters and the well-room
itt a broad promenade front which may be seen not
only alkho parts of the rotunda, but the two sales rooms
wh i ch project into Ann street. This view is obtained by
(MAUS of two twelve-feet doors, which afford access
the ,rottintla from the Ann street rooms. In the second,
or gallery 'tier, are no less than twelve rooms for assor
ted garments, regularly classified;scotnpletely lighted with
umplo windows. Iloro, too, is Mr. Simmons's own
apartment, on the western side of the g.illery, which
commands a view of the whole establishinen`.reemblini
a gay bazaar with two long streets. In the night Ms
light is supplied by '24 gas burners in shaded globes.—
.. 191e walls from gallery to the dome aro -ornamented
by beautiful pilasters of the Corinthian older. The !we
ment apartmentis devoted to woolens and piece goods,
and an immense furnace, set up by Mr. White, for warm
ing the establishment in winter. Here, then, wo have
"Oak Hall for Eighteen Hundred and Forty-nine." the
rani extensive establishinek for the sale of clothing in
the United States, namely, a rotunda of three tiers, count
ing the pit, two long avenues. allr with salesmen, pro
iacting from the rotunda to Ann, street, and five large
store and sales rooms up stairs in tho old building.—
There are on hand in this immense magazine of wear
ing apparel 45.0110 garments, and stock enough for 60,-
000 more; and the entire arrangement, regarded as n
whole, is much more like a vast clothing fair than a re
tail store.

Nor Were his expectations disappointed. •Ilk scientific calcula
