The figures of Boston retail prices and wages published by the News Bureau, last Saturday, showed that the same quantity of food which cost $3.92 in 1S90 and $3.91 in 1900, cost $4.92 in 1910, an increase of substantially twenty five per cent, over the earlier years. The Wall Street Tcurual estimates that in the last dozen years con sumption in the United States of eight leading farm products increas ed thirty-three per cent, but ag gregate farm production in quantity inert ased only three per cent. This condition is unquestionably of im portance in explaining the advance of food in the United States, and might be accepted as the entire cause were it not that the phenom enon of advancing food prices is world-wide. It will be remembered that the Journal's figures showed that local wages had advanced in ten years at practically the same rate as food prices, and in twenty years at a rate of thirty-three per cent, greater. A reasonable infer ence from this discovery is that the reason for the advance of prices in commodities is the advance in the cost of labor. But labor after all is a commodity, and its price has risen in common with the price of most other commodities, and this, too, the world over. Prices are express ed in the terms of another com modity, gold, and many economists find in the extraordinary increase of gold production in recent years the only adequate explanation of the world-wide rise in commodity prices. , . . The Zoological Press Bulletin. Timely Topics of Plants and Pests Discussed Weekly, by II. A. Surface, State Zoologist. ROACHES IN THE HOUSE. The roach nuisance has been brought to the attention of State Zoologist H. A. Surface, Harris ourg, by persons in different parts of the State. The cold winter, which resulted in brisk fires being maintained to keep up the temper ature inside of dwellings, may have resulted in these pests becoming more numerous than usual. A lawyer of Indiana, Pa., wrote to professor Surface, saying: "For some time past I have been troub ed with roaches. They keep hid in cracks during the day, but at night come out in large numbers. How's This ? We offer One Hundred Dollars Reward for any case of Catarrh hat cannot be cured by Mall's Catarrh Cure. F. J. CHENEY & CO., Toledo, O. We, the undersigned, have known F. J. Cheney for the last 15 yeats, and believe him perfectly honorable in all business transac tions and financially able to carry out any obligations made by his .irm. Everything is kept clean and in as good condition as is usually found about a well-regulated house and still they stay. We have tried variors things in trying to get rid of them. I s'ippose that fumigat ing tl.c entire house with formalde hyde would be effective. If you can give me any simple method of getting rid of them, I will be grate fid !or the advice." Professor Surface replied as fol lows: "These pes'.s are quite persistent invaders, and generally cannot be exterminated by a single applica tion. For this reason a combina tion of methods U desirable. Pow dered borax blown around cracks I hey inhabit, especially around damp places in the kitchen lions, will help to drive them away. Powdered sugar, one pa; t, and plaster of Paris, two parts, mixed together, will prove to be a good remedy. One of the best remedies is a proprietary substance sold on the market under the name of "Roach Paste" or "Roach Food." I should avoid the phosphorous poisons, ns they are dangerous to use in the house. If the annoyance caused by roaches should reach the extreme limit and it be necessary for you to fumigate, you can do this safely with hydrocyanic acid gas, although you will have to va cate the rooms during the time of the fumigation. I should not at tempt to fumigate them with formaldehyde, as I no not think this would be efficient in destroying roaches." - . Gone Through the Rapids. The following are some of the persons who have gone through the Rapids of Niagara River. Some of them were killed in doing it. Robinson, Mclntyre and Jones made the first known trip through the rapids in a small steamer in 1 85 1. Captain Matthew Webb, the fa mous English swimmer, paid his life as the penalty for his folly in attempting to swim the rapids in 1 883. Cai lisle 1). Graham, has gone through the Rapids five times in a barrel, and in 1901 swam the peri lous course with the aid of life preservers. William J. Kendall, swam the Rapils in 1S86. C. Alexander Percy, made two trips in a boat, the first in 1S87. George Hazlitt and Sadie Allen made the trip in a barrel in 1SS6. Robert W. Flack attempted the trip in a boat but drowned in 1889 Walter G. Campbell had a thrill ing experience which almost cost him his life in covering the course in a boat in 1889. F. M. Bowser covered the course in a boat in 1900. Peter Nissen made the third trip in a boat in 1902. Miss Maude Williard, weut through the Rapids in a barrel but was caught in the Whirlpool and whirled around for six hours. She died shortly after being rescued from the barrel. This happened in 1902. Mrs. Anna Taylor is the only person who has ever gone over the Falls and lived to tell the tale. She accomplished this death-defying feat iu 1 901, when she went over the horse shoe falls in a barrel. SHERIFF'S SALE.
