SUICIDES AND EXECUTIONS.
The statistics of gifts for the ben
efit of humanity as compiled by
the Chicago Tribune for 1909 shows
the greatest givings ever.
The year 1909 has been charac
terized by extraordinary benefi
cence, the total donations and be
quests amounting to $150,641,253.
Of this sum $70,636,487 represents
gifts and $77,604,866 bequests.
The whole amount has oeeu distrib
uted as follows: To charity, $67,
446,421; to educational iustitutions,
$46,122,241; to religious iustitu
tions, $22,443,885; to art museums,
galleries and public improvements,
$8,616,410; to libraries, $3,012,293.
In the distribution of this hand
some beueficence women have play
ed no unimportant part. Their
contributions by gift and bequest
amount to $13,293,930.
The largest amouutof gifts here
tofore were made in 1907, with an
amount slightly in excess of $140,
000,000. DECREASE IN SUICIDES.
In the life tragedies of the year
there shows a small decrease over
1908, the number being 10,230 as
compared with 10,832. The pro
portion of suicides as between men
and women remains about the same
as last year, the record this year
being 7,201 males and 3,029 fe
males. Physicians head the list
among professional men, though
the number is smaller than for
many years past. Ten prominent
attorneys, nine clergymen, seven
college professors, six journalists
and four artists also committed sui
cide during the year. The suicides
arising from business losses have
greatly decreased, being but 81, as
compared with over 600 last year.
Of these 81.33 were bankers or
bank employes criminally involved.
The cause of these suicides are as
follows, the classification, as in the
case of homicides, being a general
one; Despondency, 4,760; un
known cause, 1,487; insanity, 559;
domestic infelicity, 834; ill health,
936; business losses, 81; liquor, 130;
disappointment iu love, 243.
The significant feature of the
above figures is the large iuctease
There is more Catarrh in this sec
tion of the country than all other
diseases pr.t together, and until the
last few years was supposed to be
incurable. For a great many years
doctors pronounced it a local dis
ease and prescribed local remedies,
and by constantly failing to cure
with local treatment, pronounced
it incurable. Science has proven
catarrh to be a constitutional dis
ease and therefore requires consti
tutional treatment. Hall's Ca
tarrh Cure, manufactured by F. J.
Cheney & Co., Toledo, Ohio, is the
only constitutional cure on the
market. It is taken internally in
doses from 10 drops to a teaspoon
ful. It acts dirtctly on the blood
and mucous surfaces of the system.
They offer one hundred dollars for
any ca-c it fails to cure. Send for
circulars and testimonials.

INCREASE IN EXECUTIONS.
The number of legal executions,
which for a few years past has been
decreasing, shows an increase, U
ing 107 as compared with 92 in
1908.
The number of lynching in 1909
was 87, a falling off of 13 as com
pared with 1908. In 1892 the high
water mark, 235 was reached; in
1905, the low mark of 66.
The number of deatns by all
kinds of personal violence in 1909,
except suicides and lynching, as
reported by telegraph and recorded
in 1 he various States and Territor
ies, was 8,103, a decrease of 849
over 1908. It must be borne in
mind that this record does not in
clude merely those cases which are
usually classed as murder or sui
cide, but every form of death by
personal violence, and that the sub
joined classification is a general one
iu some respects, particularly as to
deaths arising from quarrels.
A significant feature of these fig
ures is the increase of murders by
highwaymen and thugs, being 185
more than in 1908. During the
year there have been fifty double,
eleven triple a id one quadruple
murders, fen murders committed
by Highbinders and twenty eight
by the Hlack Hand.
On the innumerable base ball
fields 30 were killed in 1909, and
74 seriously injured. Oil the foot
ball field 31 were killed and 246 in
jured. These include both ama
teur and professional players.
By automobile accidents 562 per
sons have Ixen killed and 2,552 se
riously injured during the year.
Rural Delivery.
Fourth Assistant Postmaster
General DeGraw in a circular let
ter to the postmasters of the U. S.
calls attention to the fact from re
ports of the carriers, that in mail
ing letters, patrons of the rural
service deposit for postage in their
respective boxes the huge total of
300,000,000 pennies, which have
to be picked up by the carrier re
garoless of weather conditions.
That frequently there is a delay
from not enough postage, and more
frequently the carriers who are
serving their patrons iu all kinds
of weather; lose the pennies from
their hands being gloved or chilled,
in the snow, all such losses must
be made up by the carrier. He "sug
gests that the attention of the ben
eficiaries of rural service be ca'.led
to the hardship this entails on men
not over paid at the best, and sug
gests the securing of postage
stamps in advance so that it may
be obviated. Those served by rural
carriers from Bloonisburg should
make anote of this matter and as
si:t in maintaining good service by
keeping themselves supplied with
stamps and stamp all mail before it
is placed in the box. A delay of
two minutes at each box means
that the carrier would mi.-s his
mail and cause a delay o( a day in
the service.

Pain in
Heart
"For two years I had pain in
my heart, back and left side.
Could not draw, a deep breath
or lie on left side, and any little
exertion would cause palpita
tion. Under advice I took
Dr. Miles' Heart Remedy and
Nervine. I took about thirteen
bottles, am in better health than
I ever was, and have gained 14
pounds."
MRS. LILLIE THOMAS,
Upper Sandusky, Ohio.
For many years Dr. Miles'
Heart Remedy has been very
successful in the treatment of
heart troubles, because of its
tonic cfTcct upon the heart
nerves and muscles. Even in
severe cases of long standing it
has frequently prolonged life for
many years after doctors had
given up all hope, as proven by
thousands of letters we have re
ceived from grateful people.
