THE COLUMBIAN. BLOOMSBURft. 1 A gfaturday Qighl i alks Bf P. E. DAVISON Rutland, Vt o a ooa ooo o o a a a a Tin: KHKriiKiti) psalm. Nov. IB, '08- (Psnlm 23.) If Hti aud!rnro of a thousand peo ple was asked to mention tho most beautiful oortlon of tho entire Illblo, the vast majority would nam tho illrd I'Hftlm. . Probably this psntni a n, tho Lord's Prayer are known by henrt to more people thnn any other section of the Hrrlptures. This shop, herd psalm has a grip on tho henrt ef the race. It Is equally appro priate at the rradle and the prave; K falls In lisping arrents from the Hps of childhood. It trembles trium phantly on the lips of old bro. There t no tank or condition In life to wliirh It does not appeal. AH will skipo that If language was ever H spired, the 23rd psalm Is Inspired. t:rltlrlsm devout, and criticism de moniac never assaulted this great prat in. It Is pre-eminent among the poetic gums of all ages. Notice the position of tho psalm. It follows the 22nd and It precedes the 24th and If you will tnke the trotiblo to look It up, you will tlnd that It bears a relation to both. For tjie 22nd psalm Is the psalm of tho cros-s, and tho 24th psalm Is the psalm of the throne; the one speaks ef crucifixion and the other of coro nation. It Is appropriate therefore, that tho 23rd psnlm should picture a holy life, following soul crucifixion ml antedating glory. Doet Not Mean Death. Io not make the mistake of thlnk ItiR that the valley of the shadow of death refers to the exit out of life. For you observe that on the other side of that experience, nil lea mi- spread In the presence of cue- inles, the noaci is nnnomwvi wiui o.i. the cup runneth over, ntu! tni l.ies and mercy follow "all tin; '.ayn of my life." Many a soul passes through the ralley and shadow of death a irood many years before he dies. If ou have never hud an experience com p: red with which death would be welcome, you have something before j-f.-i that will test every faculty of yn:r mind, every rower of your soul. John Itunyan was a good Interpreter of the 23rd psalm. In his Pilgrim's Progress he makes Christian walk through the valley of the shadow of death, very soon after he starts upon Ms pilgrimage. It was a terrific ex perience, but he came out of the darkness to live among men for many years, "the valley of the sha dow of death" far behind. When Christian went out of earthly life thero was no gloom nor shadow, but a shining pathway and choirs of wel coming angels. No. David does not refer to the change which men call death in this psalm. He culls It the "shadow" of death and a shadow never harmed anyone. The shadow of a serpent nver bit anyone. Tho shadow death may be dark and por tentlous. ghosts and hobgoblins to the terrified fancy may crowd the floom, but they are shadows that dissolve like the baseless fabric of a dream in the morning. True View of Life. It seems a little singular that right Into the heart of this wonderful psulm such a gloomy picture should be projected. Here we have green pastures, still waters, paths of right eousness, prepared tables, annointing with oil, cups running over, goodness and mercy all the days of life. And we have also "tho valley and the ihadow of death." But Is not that after all. a true view of life Men are not altogether like sheep, lyins down in a fat pasture, getting ready for slaughter. If you look carefully rou will find In this psalm, not a sheep at all, but David, (v. 1 & 2) "1" "My" "Me." You will find the ta'kslider (v. 3) "He restoreth my soul." You will tlnd the traveler, (v. 4.) "Thy rod and staff." You 'tll find the warrior, (v. 5.) "Mln memies." You will find the priest, (v. 6.) "Annolntest my head with oil " You will find the permanent resident "dwell in tho house of th's Lord Torever." In other words, tho Shepherd leads us. green pastures are b?neath us, still waters are be side us, a prepared table is before us, enemies are around us, goodness and mercy are following us, the bouse of the Lord is awaiting us, but to faeh It somewhere on the Journey e shall have to pass through the al!ey of the shadow of death. Where there is so much brightness tiiere must of necessity be deep shad ows. llest Things Come Afterward. Andiest anyone should shrink and hesitate about that experience, ob serve that the bust things in life come afterwards. On this side of Hie valley are green pastures and 'ill waters, experiences of comfort nd undisturbed, untried repose; on he other side are banquets and 'inoiiitlngs and feasting, right in thu Presence of conquered foeB, cups funning over, eternal habitations oc "Pled.
