President Cleveland, it is said, felt an intense reaction from the ardu ous iMlitical life he had led after his retirement and in his own cor respondence he laments the inabil ity to take an inieresi in uie mikwi affairs of life saying that he felt . like a steam engine hitched to a milk wagon when he had to con - cern himself with them. How : much more will Roosevelt feel the change, leaving it after such a strenuous carter and still in the prime of life and ambition. It is probable that it is the recognition of this psychical state that has de termined him to break the fall by a hunting trip to Africa where In the jungle he will work off some of the energy that has for such a long eriod been expended on congress or territory and go there to deposit nis unique ano uciicaie uanoi. 1 uc citizen of Washington is a disfran chised resident merely, iseverine less Mr. McFarland, the chairman of the three commissioners who rule the District hath told us this is an ideal government, hath told the world so in Chatauouan ad dresses and McFarland is a plausi ble man. The trreat school 6 re in Cleveland last winter in which so many little children were sacrificed, to the stupidity and carelessness of the school authorities gave the im petus to this movement which like so many others in this country is- being carried to excess in many ectiens. There are few people tupid or wicked enough to say thats. any reasonable safeguard for publia school children is unnecessary but it is lamentable to ste parents and public men committed to extrava gances in this line from the greed of those who have something to sell in the fire escape line. Over wrought and hysterical people ev erywhere are having their teelings, worked upon, by those who have something to sell that is claimed to guarantee the lives and safety of their children. If a man has a lot suitable for a new school building he may be justified in warning all, the parents in that district that the school chi'dren ari imperiled in the old building but it takes a degree of common sense to investi gate the charge before having an, emotional spasm over it.
