That forestry is growing in im
portance is evident from the care
given the matter in educational in
stistutions and the number of per
sons taking this course of instruc
tion. It is announced from Wash
ington that no less than 35 young
men who have just graduated from
American schools of forestry have
entered the government service.
They come from Yale, Harvard,
Michigan, Nebraska and other uni
versities and colleges. The cause
is one to which talent and skill may
well be devoted.
The head on the United States
penny is not that of an Indian, but
of Sarah Longacre Keen, says an
exchange. Her father was an en
graver in the Philadelphia mint and
an Iudiau chief playfully dropped
his head gear on Sarah while a
guest at the Keen home. Her pic
turesque appearance so appealed to
the father that he sketched her on
the spot and his design for the new
penny was accepted.

story:
"George Gordon, a rloh old Scot,"

"Accordingly, the tuutament waa
then and there written out at his

Retort of Shaw.
At a recent Gilbert and Sullivan
revival in London, at which Gilbert

after the performance: ' "I'd give a

Then Pat addressed Mr. Murphy.
"What's yer choice lv the bird? Will

8T. ANDREW'S CARGO OF YARN
Cut
a Whale In Two, and Shot
Waterspout.
"I'd very well dlslik to ship on a
vpmu n inicd Saint Jonah," said tr:o
Spice of Vo good ship St. Aiulie v.
I'h'enlx Lino, which arrived at e v
York, recently with merchandlsr.
aud jam from Antwerp.
The first officer's opening remarks
were In tho nature of a Joke, Mr.
Epic" explained. The St. Andrew had
hit. a whale on the trip over, he ex
plained further Still further, it hit
a whalo on a trip this way several
months ago, and Mr. Spice opinions
that whales have- a fondness for ships
named aftor tho saints. Ho told of
other ships thus named that wero ov
prlaMiKly running down whn!"s.
"In twelve hours," said Mr. Spice,
"wn rin Into a whalo and a water
spout not the whale's waterspout.
They say that It never rnln but It
pours, but I prefer my whales without
waterspout or my waterspouts with
out whales.
"It was Just breaking day, aud I
was on the bridge. What was I do
lug? I was scanning tho western hor
izon. The ship shuddered. My stom
r.ch (Mr. Spice Isn't thin) was jam
med against the bridge rail. Th
rrnit that rnmo from ine greatly
startlod the skipper, who had already
been toMfcd from his hunk.
"A derelict, I think, sir," piped tho
lookout. I sent a man over the how
to examine our Injuries. He reported
plates Intact, and also brought back
tho Information thnt tho wreck we
hit must havo held a largo cargo nf
red paint. Wo saw tho water crim
son Btrouked on all sldea of us. Wo
had not only run down a whitv, but
had run through It. Part, of It was
fouled In our propeller."
Mr. Spice told how they had dis
covered the head and yanked it up on
deck, so ns to present It to the Mus
I'um of Natural History.
"But now for the waterspout "
he began, when tho heavy hand of
Cnpt. Fitzgerald was laid on his
shoulder.
"Tho water Bpout's mine," satd tho
skipper. "Along In that afternoon I
was on tho bridge. I scanned the
northern horizon, t saw an enormous
waterspout headed straight for us. We
wen? th-n In latitude 17.13 north and
longitude 30.30 west. I have seen
pome waterspouts in my time, but
nothing like this one. It was on our
starboard bow and approached us rap
Idly. Mr. Spicw and I watched It,
and our estimate is that the spout was
about l.Oei) feet la circumfe rence ut
the base and the Lord only knows how
wide at the top, whore the black
clouds and vapors were rolling aud
twisting with great velocity and was
accompanied by a humming sound,
which became a groat roar as it
neared tho ship. Wu veered, stood
off and did every bit of clever sea
foot work I know of, but that pesky
Bpout seemed bent on rambastlng us.
"We fired tho ship's s!x-pounder
three times at. tho siwiut. The third
time was a hit and tho spout co!-lap:"-d
nnd Ml awny to nothing. For
a Uttltt time the sea around us was a
queer one. It was uncommonly chop
py and every here and there little
geysers sprang up. The black vapors
disappeared, and in a short time the
sea was as smooth as glass while
the sun came out In fine shape."
"The skipper is at a loss to think
Just what would have happened had
the third shot from the six-pounder
fell short. It was suggested to him
that ha might havo sent a sailor out
to the tip of the clipper bowsprit
armed with a cutlass, and in this
way have disconnected the spout.
Such things have been told by Bail
ors. Capt. Fitzgerald however, shook
his head and said that It was fortu
nate that the ship had a six-pounder.
Sometimes such ships carry only safty
razors and flra salutes with the cap
tain's boots."
Doctors Nonplussed.
A mysterious disease Is troubling
the Dutch medical faculty. It has
broken out In the district of Ouddorp,
not far from Utrecht, and Proressor
Spronck, of Utrecht, after all tho
bst efforts he can devise, has had to
confess himself perplexed. The dis
ease Is a contagious affection of the
heart, and the patients invariably
develop high fever. There have been
moro than 100 cases. Prof. Spronck
has made a careful analysis of blood
taken from patients but has utterly
failed to find a cause or an origin
for the epidemic.
Enemies Who Dwell Together.
Natural enemies of the animal
world are sometimes1 found living
together In extraordinary communi
ties. A recent writer quotes this ex
perience of an observer: "On one
occabion whon ferreting I bolted a
fox, a cat, a stoat and several rab
bits and rats out of the same earth.
The fox bolted first, after giving the
ferret a nip across the back, from
the effects ot which It died an hour
later. Next came the stoat and then
the cat, both of which I shot. Then
followed the rabbits and rats prom
iscuously. It was a largo burrow on
the bank of a deep, dry watercourse,
and often hold a fox when I ferreted
It ufterward."
A Delayed Funeral Sermon.
The funeral of H. G. Solomon, who
died at his home near Sapp, Boone
county, Mo., had an unusual feature
In 'that the funeral surmon of Mrs.
Solomon, who died about ten years
ago, was preached at the same time.
At the time of her death no minister
was available and It was not possl
ble to have services over the body
tu desired. It was afterward decided
by the husband and family that when
death came to the elder 1 Solomon,
funeral services should be held over
both aj the" same time. ' ' .
