Blighting the Buttonwoods.
Collegeville, Pa., June 27. The
foliage of nearly all the buttonwood
trees in the Perkiomen Valley is
withered and dead, indicating the
blighting and possibly ruinous work
of some insect.
A few days ago Dr. Freeze said
to me "Have you observed how
the Buttonwood trees are dying?"
I had not, but going up to the
Episcopal Church, I found all the
of decay.
. Not long afterward, in company
with Mr. Lee Hartnan, on a trip up
the Creek, we found all the But
tonwoods showing signs of death.
And it seems by the above para
graph that the case is wide spread.

SCHLEY SHY OF THE BEE.
Too Sensible ol People's Love to Disap

Admiral Schley cannot be induc
ed to become hypnotized by the
Presidential bee. Some days ago
S. W. Wheeler, of Camden, wrote
The Record suggesting the Admiral
as an admirable candidate for the
Democratic nomination upon whom
all the people could unite and in
whom the utmost confidence could
be imposed. A day or two later
Mr. Wheeler received the following
reply from the hero of Santiago
Bay:
Wallingford, Va., June 20, 1007
My Dear Sir: You are very kind
in both your letter and communica
ted article to Tha Philadelphia Rec
ord, aud I want you to know that I
appreciate your good opinion and
your friendship as well. But
may say in all sincerity that I lose
no sleep over such things, and I
am not, never have been and would
never consent to become a candi
date for any place, being too well
satisfied with the love of the people
to jeopardize it in anv place where
I could not help disappointing
them. ery truly yours.

NEW POSTAL RULING.
Special Delivery Stamps Not Required After
July First.
On July the first the new special
delivery order went into effect in
every post office in the United
States. After that date it will not
be necessary to place a ten cent

order to have them leach their des
tination without delay, for twelve
cents in common stamps will have
the same effect. Something addi
tional, however, is required, and it
would be well for our readers to
remember it. When you place the
stamps on the envelope be sure to
write the words Special Delivery,
otherwise the missive will be dehv
ered in the ordinary manner.

THE UNWRITTEN LAW.
A jury in Virginia has said that
the "unwritten law" is a good de
fense in a murder tri.il in that state.
Judge Loving's daughter told her
lauier that she had been out riding
with young Thomas Estis, that he
had induced her to drink liquor
that made her unconscious, and
that while in that condition Estis
assaulted her. The father was ar
rested on a charge of murder, and
the trial took place at Houston,
Virginia, last week.
The defense set up was that the
rattier Delieved the story, and that
while temoorarilv insane, he shot
the man that had wronged his
daughter. After a deliberation of
only forty-nine minutes the jury
returned a verdict of not guilty.
The defense was verv much like
that set UO in the Thaw case The
Judge refused to admit any evi
dence tending to show that the
story told by the girl to her father
was untrue. The only question
was, did he believe it, and did it so
unbalance his mind that he did not
know what he was doin?.
A few years ago no such evidence
wouia nave been admitted in any
court.
The question then was, did the
prisoner kill the deceased person,
and did his conduct before aud af
ter the deed indicate that he was of
unsound mind. What some one
might have told him that led to the
killing would not have been evi
dence. But the rules are beintr re
laxed and broadened, and new lines
ot cletense are being permitted by
the courts. Whether this is for the
general good remains to be seen.

Statisticians contend that a few

Inventors will then be confronted
with the problem of supplying other

Members of Ilritlsh Government.
All told, the government of Ene
land consists of only forty-six per
sons, and the transfer of Dolltlcal
control from one party to another
directly affects only these forty-six
persons ana a few irreat function
arles of state, whose duties are
purely ornamental.
In all, not one hundred persons
are concerned by a chanue of admin

employes of every class, from fes-

administrators, are not disturbed by
the transfer of Dower. Clearlv no

The principle on which the parlia
mentary system of England is
founded is the rule of the majority,
and the majority elects to surrendor
Its power to one man the Dremler.
The power of the majority Is so
strictly recognized that the rules of
the House of Commons deprive the
minority of all power to Initiate or
shape legislation.
When a majority of the electorato
of the kingdom has sanctioned n
policy represented by a political
party, tnat party is given free hand
to put Its nollcy Into

A GREAT OFFER
For You Only
Read this announcement. It is your opportunity.
If you don't read it you will miss your chance. The
greatest magazines in this country have combined to be
offered together at a greatly reduced rate. Never before
was such an offer given to the public, and it is safe to
say never will be made again. This year several maga
zines have increased their subscription price, which
shows how much greater this offer ; really is. The only
reason we are making it to the people of this vicinity is
because the magazine finds they have not as many sub
scribers as they desire in this particular locality. But
only a limited number will be sold at this price, there
forejwe advise every one to accept this offer without
delay. When we have received a certain number we
shall withdraw the offer.
