The foregoing course of study has been prepared to serve the following purposes: i. To provide a definite basis for work in the grades beyond the com mon branches as .taught in village and rural High Schools of Columbia county. 2. 'lo secure a definite promotion in the High Schools throughout the county, thereby lessening the evil effects of a too frequent change of teachers. To unify the work in the High .Schools of the county by furnishing the basis for a closer and more cm cient direction and supervision, and for comparing by means of examina tion, the results in the different schools. ' 4. To enable the directors and parents to know better what our High Schools are accomplishing for their children, and to co-operate with the teachers in the work. This course of study has been fram ed primarily for the purpose of meet ing the requirements of those young people who have no piospects of ever attending an advanced school away from home. Its aim, therefore, is to provide an opportunity for securing a thoroughly good, general education which shal serve as. an adequate foundation for successtul career in any vocation. While it is not the direct aim to prepare students for admission into higher institutions of learning, it will be tound that the course provides an excellent preparation for entrance .into our Ctate Normal School and iwith only a tew additions it meets th requirements for entrance into the .colleges. The work as outlined in this course of study meets the requirements of our State law, relating to the estab lishine of Towaship High Schools The maximum amount of extra' ap ' propnation to townships maintaining '. High School of three years is six hundred dollars, a sum sufficient, with careful management, to maintain cuch leware of Ointments for Catarrh that Con tain Mercury mercury will surtlv destroy the sense of smell and completely derang the whole .system when entering through the mucous surfaces. Such articles should never be used except on prescriptions from reputable phy&i ctans, as the damage they do is ten fold to the good you can possibly de rive from them. Hall's Catarrh Cure manufactured by F. T. Cheney & Co. Toledo, O., contains no mercury, and is taken internally, acting directly UDon the blood and mucous surfaces of the system. In buying Hall's Ca tarrh Cure be sure to get the genuine . It is taken internally, and made in Toledo, Ohio, by F. J. Cheney & Co. Testimonials free. Sold by Drupgists, price 75c. per bottle. Hall's Family J 'ills are the best. a school without additional expense to the district. This course of High School studies is calculated to follow the work as presented in the course of study for the common schools. Admission into ligh Schools will, therefore, be con- itioned upon graduation from the common school course and the pre sentation of the regular County Super intendent s certificate or its equivalent. The course has been outlined on a basis of an eight months term and covers three years' work, each year's requirements in the various subjects to be outlined month by month. By adopting the plan of alternation all the work can be well done with one good teacher, but the success of the High School depends upon the teacher having the necessary qualifi cations required by law to do High School work. This implies that he must be either a college graduate or a graduate of the State Normal School in the regular course. Promotions from one grage to another and graduation from the High School course shall be determined by means ot annual examinations at the close of the term to be given by committee appointed for the purpose by the County Superintendent. This committee shall consist of lour leading teachers of the county and shall be under the direction of the County Superintendent. In making promo tions the committee shall confer with the High School teachers concerning the special conditions which should be taken into account. Questions for the examination must be based strictly upon the require ments of the course of study. All the principals of the High Schools following this course are ex pected to meet with the Superintend ent at least once a month during the school year for the purpose of discuss ing the various phases of the work. This course of study represents the careful work of several months. The opinions of a large number ot educa tors, both at home and abroad, have been carefully embodied in it, and we feel fairly confident that it is adequate to meet the present needs. Exper ience will no doubt reveal the neces sity for revision, which shall be made by the teachers and Superintendent when necessary. Wm. W. Evans, Co. Supt. ot Schools. We don't question the truthful ness of the old flinfc " experience is the best teacher ' ' but we have learned that her .rates of tuition are sometimes pretty .high. Kidney and Liver Trouble- (they commonly go together) attack the rich in their palaces, the poor in their tenements, the lawyer, the doctor, the judge, the preacher, the woman at her housework, the sailor on the sea. Dr. David Kennedy prepared his new medicine, Cal cura Solvent, to cure it, and it does. Write to the Cal cura Company, Roundoui, N. Y., for free booklet and sample bottle. Oommittad Suioide. George Herbert, a retired mer chant and former councilman of Car -bondale, committed suicide last week by shooting himself in the head with a revolver. Two of his properties were inundated by the late flood. He was brooding over the possibility of his tenants leaving him and became deranged. He viciously assaulted his wife, and then, going upstairs, locked himself in his room and took his life. Hot Journal Season. According to an old railroad man the hot journal season is approaching and' accidents due to axles burning oft are to be expected. The reason ad vanced is that tramps rob the axle boxes of the oily waste, finding it good material for starting fires, and many journals which have keen at tended to thus run dry at unexpected times. On a freight train on the D. L. &. W. which passed through Bloomsburg Friday, there was a hot journal, the flames at which leaped half way up the car. It must have been discovered by the trainmen as no wrack was recorded. Grapes Are Heilthv. Eat all the grapes you care to. Eat them fearlessly, and the more the better. "This fear of getting appen dicitis," 6aps the Dietic ami Ilygenic Gazette, "is utterly baseless, since the healthy appendix is protected by a valvular arrangement which prevents even the smallest seeds from entering it. It is only after inflammation has already destroyed its normal pro tection that any foreign substance can gain access to it. To feel compelled to e&chew all seedy berries and fruits is seriously to curtail one's dietry, and is entirely unnecessary. In fact, the free and constant use of ripe berries and fruits of all kinds is one ot the best preventives of this dangerous dibease. Fruit eating prevents or helps to overcome constipation, and constipation is the most prolific cause of appendicitis. f. All smooth seeds are harmless. WASHINGTON. From our Regular Correspondent. Washington, October, 19. 1903. The Presidential boom of William Randolph Hearst continues to grow. Representative Sliober of New York, who has just arrived here, says "North, South, East and West there has been a great deal of talk about Represen tative Hearst, and with good reason. He is in touch with the President makers the people everywhere. I know that there is a large number of practical politicians in New York Stale and elsewhere who think that with the New York State indorsement Mr. Hearst is the only man who can capture the Democratic National Con vention. Mr. Hearst" large and val uable business interests would attract to' him a good proportion of the inde- pendent vote and nis popularity a mon 2 the industrial classes in the East would mean his election. Th reports from Georgia and elsewhere in the South all go to show that Mr, Hearst is rapidly gaining strength." On account of the Hearst boom Senator Gorman s chances in the South do not look quite so bright, but it is said that his friends are not wor rying. They declare it is good policy to create a little diversion at this time while Mr. Gorman all along has been inclined to keep himself in the back cround. He believes that it is best to have the other fellows talked about Owing to personal rivalries and to the lack of that harmony which comes from party loyalty in the final contest early booms are dangerous to the can didate proposed and Senator Gorman is politician enough to realize this. Furthermore if Maryland, where the race question is made the issue.shoukl be carried by the Democrats, Mr. Qorman would be regarded as a strong candidate .against President Roose veil. Therefore while Hearst's press bureaus and labor agents continue to boom his candidacy, Gorman s friend are awaiting the results of the election It is now generally believed that the extra session of Congress will pass a bill enabling the treaty, which grants the slight reduction of twenty percent on Cuban imports, to become effect ive. The beet sugar men seemed to have withdrawn their opposition, but independent cigar manufacturers will oppose bitterly the change in the to bacco duties which they claim is in interest of the trust which now owns the Havana factories, and will destroy the domestic industry of making cigars from the imported leaf. The discus sion of the treaty will furnish the Democrats with an opportunity to make many speeches denouncing the tariff, and it is expected that much time will be consumed in the debate. The State Department expects that the President will also submit the Chinese-American commercial treaty, which was signed last week by our minister at Peking. This treaty pro vides for the abolition of the likin, or internal tariff of China ; the right of residence for missionary work; the protection of patents, trade-marks and copyrights ; the permission of Ameri cans to develop the mineral resources of China ; a uniform coinage through out the Empire, and the opening of two ports in Manchuria. Owing to serious violations of the new naturalization law, which have just been discovered by a special agent of the Department of Justice, President Roosevelt, it is said, will recommend to Congress such a change in the law as will limit the right of conferring naturalization to the Federal courts. He will favor also a permanent commission to question the applicant for citizenship papers, to take other necessary testimony and to report the result of the examination to the judge. It has been found that the provision of the new law which prevents anyone wilh anarchistic be Shyloclc was the man who wanted a pound of human flesh. . There are many Shylocks now, the convales cent, the consumptive, the sickly child, the pale young woman, all want human flesh and they can get it take Scott's Emulsion. In Chicago a judge Imitted 1.800 foreigners lo full citizenship in one evening, which would have been a physical imnossi ility, and he administered the oatn personally to each applicant as the law provides. 4 lt is rumored here that Judge Hen- derson M. aomervine, cnairman 01 ine Board of General Appraisers at New York, is to be removed, ostensibly be cause of a difference of opinion be tween him and Secretary Shaw with reference to judicial decisions, but in eality because of an article he wrote far a magazine, in which he critized the President.. The Judge, condemn ed the appointment of Dr. Crun as collector cf customs at Charleston, S C., and said that the disturbing effect of President Roosevelt's attitude to ward the negro c?n never be ade- j q'lately estimated in its retardation of the solution or the race problem. Judge Somerville is a man of great in dependence of opinion and he docs not feel that any apology lor his arti cle is needed. Importing firms in New York, Bal timore, New Urieans and oin;r cities are already learning by direct exper ience the working of the new pure food law. In consequence of the analysis by the Bureau of Chemistry cargoes of foreign good! just imported to these cities have been orhcially con demned and notice to this effect" for warded to the Treasury Department for final act-on. Dr. H. W. Wiley, who has become well known as the government chemist in the Agricultur al Department, has charge of these investigations. He says, "We are en forcing the law from three points of view as provided in the act. We are excluding food proJucts which have any foreign substance added to thern which is injurious to health, such as certain preservatives, bleaching agents ami artificial colors. The question of false labels is more troublesome. We can sometimes determine it by chemical means, as has already hap pened in several cases where our im portation of what purported to be pure olive oil was found to contain o her vegetable oils, such as cotton or pea nut. Other false labels are easily de tected for geographic reasons, such as a sherry made in Greece or a Cognac made in Hamburg. Cognac is pro duced only in certain districts of France and sherry only in Spain. It is generally admitted by importers that large quantities of misbranded wines, brandies, and wh skey come to this country. PHILADELPHIA & READING RAILWAY. Id effect May 1". 1908.
