' A To Punish Fishermen- All sorts of dire trouble is to await fishermen in this state if they go on for bidden lands hereafter, if William Wayne of Taoli, has his way. He in troduced a bill into the House fixing the fine of $50 fur every offence. Be sides this, the sportsmen will have to pay the costs and may be sued tor damages as well. The fisherman may be arrested only when the land cover- ed by the stream has been posted with at least 10 handbills, forbidding trespassing. The warrant must be issued within six months of the offence. If the offender refuses to pay the fine, he shall be imprisoned one day for each dollar of fine imposed. The Coining of Easter. Easter is late this year. Ash Wed nesday came on February 5 and Easter will occur on April la, almost as late as it can possibly come Easter may come as early as March ai and as late as April 21. It de- Den ds. as every one knows, on the phase of the moon. Easter Sunday is always the Sunday that follows full moon immediately following the Sprinz equinox (March in 1894 it again fell on so early a date, 21). If the moon falls on Sunday Easter is the Sunday next following. In 1883 the day fell on March 25, and in this and the two following centuries it will occur only seven times on the same date, 1951, 2035, 2124, 2125 and 2198. Old Spelling Bees- Old time spelling matches should be restored to public favor. We look upon this spelling business as some other old-fashioned things in the pub lie schools as of primary importance, and we are glad to find some, at least, are placing emphasis upon a subject which has fallen somewhat into disre pute in late years, or since the inau guration of the sugar-coated educa tion. Training pupils to see words as wholes never make good spellers. It can be demonstrated that those of us who learned spelling under the bid legime can, taking an equal number ct intelligent people, show a much greater proportion of good spellers than can be shown among those who have learned or pretended to learn spelling by later methods. Will Last But Siity Years- In a lecture betore the National Geographical Society, Professor Charles D. Walcott, director of the United States Geological Survey, stated that at the present rate of con sumption the anthracite coal fields in the United States will be exhausted in sixty years. The bituminous supply he stated will last until the year 2203. New Wireless System. Rev. Joseph Murgas, pastor of the Hungarian Catholic church of Wilkes- barre, has completed a new wireless telegraphy system, which he claims is in some resr, ects superior to that of either Marconi or Tesla. He claims that with his present equipment he can send messages seventy miles in tend by the earthen circuit, and seven hundred miles through the sea.
