GREAT DAYAT ROUE
Twenty-fifth Anniversary of
Pope Leo's Coronation.
BRILLIANT CEREMONY IN ST. TETER'S
Ilia llnllneaa Kndnrea the Knltitnr
of the neennlon Ailnilrnbly nud
Kipreaaea Great KntlafHrtlon
at the Inr' Hour.
HOME, March 4.-The twenty-fifth
anniversary of the coronation of Pope
Leo was celebrated with all the gran
deur and lmpresslveness associated
with the high ceremonies of the Catho
lic church and amid 11 display of enthu
siasm and emotion on the part of the
vast assemblage gathered within the
walls of St. Peter's such as vied with
the greatest of previous demonstrations
of reverence and affection for the aged
pontiff.
Last night all the sacred edifices in
Home, monasteries, convents, semina
ries, and many private houses were
illuminated in commemoration of the
event, the Trastevere quarter and the
Leonine city especially presenting a
Masse of light, while the general effect
was heightened by the burning of ben
gal llres throughout the city.
Pope I.oo, who supported admirably
the fatigue and excitement of the day's
ceremonies, after having retired rose
again from his couch and, going to the
window of bis bedroom, gazed for
awhile upon this scene of Illumination.
The view from the Vuticnn, embracing
a stretch of seven miles brilliant with
light, was a marvelous one, nud his
holiness exclaimed as lie withdrew
from window, "This will Indeed be
n pleasant thliuj to dream of."
The ceremony In St. Peter's cathe
dral lasted two hours and a quarter,
and although it was noticeable that
Pope Leo felt tho effects of Ills recent
cold, all were surprised to see how well
he seemed. His voice wus strong, his
gestures vigorous, nnd the frantic
cheering which greeted hi arrival and
departure gave him visible pleasure
and brought a faint tinge of color to
his face. After the tiring ceremony of
the morning Dr. I.npponi carefully ex
amined the condition of the pope, and
although lie found him none the worse
for the fatigue ho had undergone, yet
lie ordered him to rest during the
whole afternoon. Hut at night after
the doctor's last visit his holiness in
sisted upon getting up to view the illu
minations. At the close of the day's exercises the
ftpntlff exclaimed: "Tho demonstration
today has been so affecting. It sur
passed all my expectations. I am com
pletely satisfied. There was no note of
discord."

ST. JOHN'S, X. P., March 4. The

which were snowbound in the Interior
are now reaching the city and relate
thrilling stories of their experiences.
During their detention in the snow

daily, consisting of cuke, hard biscuits
and a mug of tea. Sometimes they had
only one meal. They had no meat for
over a week and were reduced to very
short commons when tho relief reached
them. Four women on one of tho
trains suffered extremely, one being
stricken with fainting fits from ex
haustion. The second class passengers
had no sleeping accommodations dur

A M.W 1031AL CARD-
For ''Return" Una With Vigncitos ci Shor
tnuii a d Sheridan.
The old return postal card has out
lived its nseluleess and is to be short
ly replaced bv another of a newer
arid more elaborate design. On the
rcw card the viunette of General
Giant, which appeared on both the
forwarded card and the return, is suc
ceeded by those of Generals Sherman
and Sheridan.
On the lace of the forwarded caul
19 the face of General Sherman, witli
the yeats ' 1820 1891." On the re
turn card is the face of General Sheri
dan, with the years 1831-1888."
The caution to the sender: "This
side for address only,"' together with
the "United States ol America, Reply
Postal," instead of covering the apac
between the stamp and the edge of
the card, is confined to a corner in
small type, admit ing of the two post
marks, so important now in business
life. This innovation was recommend
ed by business men throughout the
country to whom this matter of post
marks is often r( vital importance,
and it was through their efforts tbat
the design was finally accepted. Now,
instead of having one postmark on
the front, often obscured, and another
on the back of the card, completely
obscured by the writing, the two post
marks will stand out on the front,
indicating the hour of receipt and de
livery. Another point to be noticed about
the cards is the continuation of the
effort of the Post Office Department
to make the new stamps and postals
constitute object lesson in Ameii
can history.
The GibralUr of the Insurance World-
The Company which has "The
Strength of Gibraltar " has given one
more proof, if proof were needed, that
the assumption of the phrase was well
warranted in the Annual Statement
now before us.
During 1902, The Prudential has
added over One hundred and eight
Million dollars to the amount of paid
for insurance it had in force ; it has
added to its assets nearly Twelve
Million dollars ; to its income nearly
Five Million dollars; and to its sur
plus funds more than Two Million
hve hundred Thousand dollars.
It has now in force over Eight
hundred Million dollars of life insur
ance divided among nearly Five Mill
ion policies, representing roughly
speaking about One Million families.
This is really a magnificent show
ing for a Company that has only a
record of twenty-seven years to look
back upon; certainly nothing like it
has ever before occurred in the his
tory of American Life Insurance. In
these days of keen competition, suc
cess can only be the result of enter
prise coupled with upright business
management; and one does not need
to go further than this cause to ac
count for The Prudential's great
success.
" When the butter won't
come put a penny in the
churn," is an old time dairy
proverb. It often seems to
work though no one has ever
told why.
When mothers arc worried
because the children do not
gain strength and flesh we
say give them Scott's Emul
sion. ,
It is like the penny in the
milk because it works and
because there is something
astonishing about it.
Scott's Emulsion is simply
a milk of pure cod liver oil
with some hypophosphites
especially prepared for delicate
stomachs.
Children take to it naturally
because they like the taste
and the remedy takes just as
naturally to the children be
cause it is so perfectly adapted
to their wants.
For all weak and pale and
thin children Scott's Emulsion
is the most satisfactory treat
ment.
