The posto.Tice rollers who re
cently operated at Mainvillc, Pic
Hire Rocks, and several other
places, are verv daring and yet
with all the chances they take, the
outfit has so far succeeded in ev.ul
jnR capture notwithstanding that
there are at least a dozen detec

This K'ig, at least it is supposed
to be, last Tuesday night tortured
Be'nii'.e Metich at his home at Mill
ersbuig. Tliev stole a horse and
carriazj and later drove to West
Milton where two ot them were
seen in an abandoned boiler house
It is said that all postage stamps
stolen were sent to New York city
where they are disposed of by a
"fence." The gang usually rides
freight trains and before a robb.ry
sometimes puts up at a hotel.
The robbers work under the di
rection of a leader who plans all
the jobs. He usually stops at the
best hotels and rides passenger
trains, lie is described as a tall,
red whiskered man and lias been
seen in the vicinity of Mainvide,
upon different occasions.

Perhaps there may be city papers,
filled with worked over chaff out ol
the da:lies, to be had for a trifle less
than the subscription price of the
home country weekly, but there are
differences between the two that bear
in an overwhelming degree in favor ot
the latter.
The city paper publishes little or
nothing ot your county news, cases
tried in court, or any of the events of
interest to the people of your locality.
You may live the most upright life,
be charitable and exemplary, and
when vou die, which paper sings your
praise? If there is a wedding in your
family, which paper pa)s cornpu
ments to the young couple just start
ing on the voage of life? If you or
your relatives engage in some enter
prise, which paper makes note 01 me
' matter and gives it publicity for your
benefit? If you or vour friends get
sick or hurt, which paper chronicles
the lact? Which paper tells of your
churches and schools and labors in
cessantly and without a tithe of pro
poitionate recompense for the up
building and general welfare of your
town and township and county, your
granges and secret orders, and records
the proceedings all around you, of
your relatives and acquaintances, and
overlooks family affairs that are better
out ot print, and does a thousand
things for the good of the town and
country districts? Is it the city paper

the roundhouse the senator inquired
the cost of n special train to curry
him from Terre Haute to Princeton.
He wns told thut $'.10 would foot the

crawled into the rub with the engineer

of an immediute political demonstra

escorted him up town. The senator
observed that he was "on time."
"Earlier than I expected," replied
the chairman. "Will you go to your
hotel now to remain until the meet

"When is the meeting?" inquired the
senator.
"Why, did you not know; seven
o'clock to-night. I supposed the com

had been chauged from afternoon un

But the committee had not, and
therefore the senator had made nn un

Standard Oil Coinpiny is opposed to
the Nelson amendment. If there had
been any real objection on the part of
the Standard Oil people they would
h ive put sued very different method;-.
Of course, with a la'ge number of the
people the Rockefeller story will go
and they will regard the I resident as
a modern St. George valhantly des
troying the trust dragon. To those
wlio know the facts, however, tne
a hole sensation is ridiculous."
'
One object Ins been attained by
the disclosure made by the President
and that is the close relation of the
Speaker of the House to the trust
interests. To those on the inside this
has long been known but the Rocke-'
feller story was the occasion for the
Associated Press to reveal the fad
.hat the Speaker actually drew the
publicity substitute for the Nelson
amendment which was favored by the
attorneys of the Standard Oil Com
pany. This amendment was urged
upon the conferrees but was rejected
by them.
There is grave doubt in the minds
of many senators and numbers ot
Congress as to the usefulness of the
Elktns bill. It has been dit-covered
that this amendment puts the mter-
lamiiiiiL' to his party and especially
to the cardinal principle of the tepu-
