The Old Give Way to the New
at the Court House, Mon.
day Jan. 5.
Change in Clerical Forces.
Monday was a tlay of changes at
the Court House. The old Hoard
of County Commissioners passed
out of existence, although V. II.
wisher, who was re elected for
another term, retains his scat. The
new officers were all on hand
bright and early, and after taking
the oath before J. C. Rutterjr.,
took charge of their respective
offices without a.iy ceremony.

rrothonotary and Clerk of the
Courts, C. M. Terwilliger, was th;
first to assume his duties. The
genial V. II. llenrie was ready at
tight o'clock to turn over the reins
of office to his successor. He has
made an excellent official and re
tires with a clean record. Mr.
Terwilliger has appointed his son
Reber as deputy prothonotary and
Freeze Quick, who for several years
was connected with the office in
the capacity of deputy, will also
assist. With this efficient corps
the public may rest assured of a
good administration.
Register and Recorder
A. B. Croop.
The office ol Treasurer like that
of Prothonotary underwent an en
tire change. This important de
partment of the county's business
will be looked after during the en
suing tnree years by Air. A. JJ.
Croop. Mr. Croop has been a long
time resident of I'riarcreek town
ship where he has followed suc
cessfully, fanning and dairying.
He brings to the office a wide busi
ness experience and is tnorouguly
competent to fill the office. We don't
believe that the voters will have
any cause to regret that they placed
Mr. Croon m this position. He
has appointed C. II. Campbell as
deputy. This gentleman will need
no introduction. He has already
Eerved the people ns Register and
Recorder for two terms and is well
and favorably known all over the
county. The trcasurership was
never in better hands.
District Attorney
' A. W. Duy.
A. W. Duy, who succeeds John
G. Ilarman as District Attorney,
has the unique distinction of being
the first Republican who has ever
held the office.- Mr. Duy lias been
rartv leader for a number of
years and is ai present ciiairin.m
of the County Cotuniiitee. He
posesses everv requisite and will fill
the office with credit tohtmseU aim
the people who elected him.

J. C. Rutter, Jr., will continue
in the office of Register and Re
corder for another term of three
years. The large vote given him
at the recent election is sufficient
proof of the faith and confidence
the people of Columbia county have
in hun.
William Krickbaum took the
oath of office as Associate Judge on
Mondav Mornincr. As Court was
in session, this being the regular
monthly argument day, he at once
.assumed his seat -upon the bench.
There was no formal ceremony
about it and his assumption of the
office was not heralded with trum
pets. Mr. Krickbaum has held
nearlv everv other office in the
county, and as h is a man of pos
itive character, he has made ene'
mies as well as friends, and opinion
is divided as to the manner in which
he has filled th' various offices
Some people are of the opinion that
his political success js the result of
his own shrewdness, while otners
believe that at least on some
occasions his success has been some
what due to the enemies he has
made, however this may be, "the
old man" has had a remarkable
career, and he will probably round

The commissioners elect, Geo

II. Fisher, arrived at the Court
House during the morning and
organized by electing Mr. Bogert
president and Mr. Sterner secretary
They had a long session in the
morning during which time they
examined the statement and book
in m-Hrr to pain some idea of th
mnntv's finances. The matter of
unnohitments was also taken up
but there were none made until the
afternoon session.
Immediately after the board ad
journed for lunch the Columbian
reporter interviewed them, but they
would make no comment lor mhou

the Court was in' session and the
vacancy was promptly filled by the
appointment of J. R. Deimer of
Catawissa. -The Board then orga
nized by electing Geo. II. Sharpless
president aud Charles F. Derr as
secretary. They arranged to begin
work at once on the books of the
officials and will in all likelihood be
busy for a month or more.
Corridor Chat.

was busy shaking hands on Mon
day. He passed the cigars around
to the numerous callers at the olhce
throughout the day.
The Commissioners olhce was
the center of attraction on Monday.
The room was uearly filled.
Candidates for sheriff are looming
up. There will be an unusually
large number in the field and the
fight piomises to be interesting.
Rush Zarr removed his personal
belongings from the Trothonotary's
office Momdav moraine and as
sumed his new duties in the Blooms
burer National.
The following bonds are on file
in the Register and Recorder's

$19,500 with the Fidelity and De
posit Comoanv of Maryland as
surety.
Bond of C. M. Terwilliger, Tro

and Deposit Company of Maryland
as surety.
