Ears Urow During Life
Theie Altachmonti Do Not Attain Full Sizo
Until Death Comes.
The systematic examination of
more than 40,000 pairs of human ears
in ICng'.atul and France has resulted
in some interesting conclusions. For
one thing, it is arertained that the ear
continues to grow in the latter decade
of life in fact it appears never to stop
growing until death. If one will take
the trouble to look around in an as
semblage of people, as at church, he
will discover that old folks have ears
considerably larger than those of the
middle-aged. A woman who has small
shell like ears at 20 years of age will
be very apt to possess medium sized
ears at 40 and large ears at 60.
Why ears should go on growing all
one's life any more than noses is a
mystery. There are a good many ot
her points about them that are instruc
tive, their shapes being markedly per
sistent through heredity.
An ear wiU be handed down so to
speak from lather to son for genera-1
tion after generation with compara
tively little modification. Some athori
ties on criminology assert that crminals
are very apt to have a peculiar kind
of ear, which is recognized by an ex
pert in such matters.
There is probably nobody in the
world who has a pair of ears perfectly
matched: in most people the two diff
er perceptibly, not only in shape but
also in size, frequently they are

A Dublin (Ind.) dispatch to the

WASHINGTON.
From our Kcuulnr Correspondent.
Washington, December 29, 190a.
There is every reason to believe
that President Roosevelt now faces
the most serious crisis in his political
career and the lear that he is about
to make a crave error is by no means
confined to his political opponents.
When Germany and Great Britain
assented to the proposition of the
United States, that the Venezuelan
situation be submitted to a court of
arbitration, it was supposed that the
I Inuue Court would be called upon
to decide the many questions involved.
There is reason to oelieve, too,
that this was the preference of Great
Untain but Germany objected and as
a result an informal proposition was
made to Mr. Roosevelt to act as ar
bitrator. As is customary in diplomacy
this ptoposition was made informally
with a view to permitting the Presid
ent to decline if he saw fit without re
fusing the formal invitation of the
powers. lie replied, informally of
course, but in such terms as to leave
it evident that, while somewhat reluc
tant, he was not positively adverse to
accepting the responsible position.
That the President was greatly flat
tered bv the offer, has been evident
to all who have come in contact with
him. As a result, the formal offer has
now been forwarded to Washington
and even if the President determines
to decline the responsibility he cannot
do it as Gracefully as when the offer
had been made only informally.
At the Cabinet meeting on Tues
day, the question as to whether or
not the President ought to arbitrate
the Venezuelan question was exten.
sively discussed and your correspond
ent learns from an autho.'ative source
that Seer -taries Hay, Root and Hitch
cock earnestly opposed his so doing,
while Secretaries Shaw and Wilson
and Postmaster General Payne advo
cated his assuming the responsibility. !
Mr. Knox s position cannot be learn
ed and Mr. Moody was absent. The
argument of the opposition is that af
ter having rendered judgment in favor
of the Europeans, as it seems likely
he would have to do, the President
would be almost oowerless to inter
pose drastic measures which the '
powers might deem necessary for the (
collection of their debt. If, on the j
contrary, the arbitration is submitted
to the Hague, the President would
maintain a neutral position and could
promptly protest at any course which
appeared to involve violation of the
Monroe uoctrine. xno decision was
reached even after the Cabinet meet
ing but the fact is evident that Mr.
Roosevelt is dazzled by the honor he
believes has been conferred on him
and is unable to see the logic of those
advisers who regard honor as merely a
cloak for shrewd Teutonic diplomacy.
There is beginning to be some
question as to whether the republican
party can afford to longer disregard
the interests of the people as tiiey
are affected by the coal situation.
In fact, before Congress adjourned
for the holidays Senator Lodge intro
duced a re-olution in the Senate
authorizing the President to waive the
tariff on Canadian coal when in his
judgment the situation demanded such
action. The action ot the antnracne
coal trust in advancing the pnoe 50
cents per ton in itself caused the se
verest criticism but their lurther ac
tion, in refusing to control the inde
pendent operators, notwithstanding
the fact that they have ample power
to do so, and their evident sanction of
brokerage charges lar in excess of the
price they pretended to charge is ex
citing the utmost indignation. A Wash-
ingtonian who desired to secure a con
siderable amount of coal recently went
to Wilkesbarre for that purpose. He
was met with the statement that the
trust could not supply him but a cleik
advised him to apply to a broker fiom
whom he secured ample coal at an
advance of $3 over the trust price.
When he asked the railroad to ship
the coal he was met with the state
ment that the company had no cars,
but he again received a tip to apply
to a broker with the result that he
was informed that by paying double
the usual freight the coal could be
gotten through. These fects are be
ginning to come out anil the result
promises to be a senatorial investiga
tion of the situation and possibly the
passage ot the Lodge resolution.
Senator Tones has asked that the At
torney General be required to submit
to the Senate certain papers he is al
leged to have received when the coal
strike was at its highth and which, it
is claimed, furnished ample proof of
the fact that an anthracite coal trust
exists ami that the coal companies are
doimr bussiness in violation of the
law. There is some criticism among
the republican senators of the Anthra
cite Coal Strike Commission for refus
ing to investigate the question as to
whether the coal companies constitute
a trust and it is regarded as possible
that they will consent to a d, scission
of the subject after the holidays.
Tl, t,.riinn nf SjcrclarV Root to
give to Mr. James J. Hill the cont
ract for the transportation ot troops
across the Pacific h is caused the ut
most consternation and indignation on
the part of. Mi. Harrirnan, who repre
sent the Chicago & Alton and South
ern Pacific systems. Mr. Harrirnan,
after expressing himself in violent
terms as to the action of the Secretary
if War. left Washington but he has
rented a house here and it is believed
will return after the holidays and will
instigate a fight which may carry the
contract onto the floors of Congress.
He is indignant that he his been out
witted by his rival, Mr. Hill and he
alleges bad faith on the part of Mr.
Root.
Thp President has settled, :t is be
lieved, the question of privilege be
tween trie Senate and the House in
volved 111 the ratification of the Cuban
treaty by sending the treaty to the
Senate only and advising members of
the House that when it is ratified he
will ask Congress to pass enabling
legislation. The legislation will be in
the form of a bill authorizing customs
collectors to collect only the decreas
ed duties provided for by the treaty.
It is understood that this method will
be satisfactory to the members of the
House and that thus all friction and
delay on that score will be obviated

Salt pork is a famous old-
fashioned remedy ior con
sumption. "Eat plenty of
pork," -vas the advice to the
consumptive 50 and 100
years ago.
Salt pork is good if a man
can stomach it. The idea
behind it is that fat is the
food the consumptive needs
most.
Scott's Emulsion is the mod
ern method of feeding fat to
the consumptive. Pork is too
rough for sensitive stomachs.
Scott's Emulsion is the most
refined of fats, especially
prepared for easy digestion.
Feeding him fat in this
way, which is often the only
way, is half the battle, but'
Scott s Emulsion does more
than that. There is some
thing about the combination
of cod liver oil and hypophos
phites in Scott's Emulsion
that puts new life into the
weak parts and has a special
action on the diseased lungs.
