Health is the first requisite
to womanly happiness. General
ill-health in women has its ori
gin in local womanly diseases.
Cure the diseases of the delicate
womanly oreanism and the Ken
eral health is perfectly restored.
The remarkable benefits ex
perienced from the use of Dr.
Pierce's Favorite Prescription
are due to this medicine's per
fect cures of womanly diseases.
It establishes regularity, dries
weakening drains, heals inflam

female weakness.
"It adonis me great pleasure to be

THE PANAMA II AT-

RULED BY CURIOSITY.
rVuy Americana Seemingly Go Crnsy

World Monarchies.
Foreign critics of America nnd Amer
icans find anitiething incongruous in
the almost univeisul riirinsily of our
dcmcicrntic coiintryttien in the persons,
the habits, the elinrncters hihI the nets
of those who inherit the right to rule,
mul of their wives, sons, daughters,
listers nnd cousins mid mints.
One cnnnut deny tlie fact, however it
nitty be explained, nor however con
I'ont rndictory to democrnl ie principles,
it nitty be. Moreover, snys the Youth'
Companion, the country hns just given
n most conspicuous Illustration of the
In the work that he has just com
pleted on basketry. Professor Otis T.
Mason, of Washington, discovered
that the finest example of weaving in
the world is the Panama hat. These
hats are made in the city of Jipijapa
(pronounced hippyhappv), in the pro
vince of Montecristi, Ecuador, and
the industry constitutes one of the
greatest resources of that republic.
The reason why this hat is known to
Europeans, Americans and foreigners
in general under the iiaine of " Pana
ma " is owing to the fact thijt nearly
two centuries these hats have reach
ed the markets of the outside world
through the ports of Panama, on the
(sthmus ot Darien, the great distribu
ting center for the products of the
South and Central America countries.
The correct name is, therefore, the
'Jipijapa hat."
The " toquilla" or leaf of a small
plant is used for this purpose. It
(rows abundantly all throughout
Ecuador, the leaves coming up in the
shape of a fan. The technical name
f the plant is the "carludovica pa--oata"
and it is this plant that fur
lishes the material for making the
Jipijapa hat. There are Jipijapa hats
f all qualities from those costing a
tew cents up to those that are worth
685. The merits of these last (really
uarvels of fineness) consists as much
n the scarcity of the toquilla straw as
n the difficulty of the weaving, and,
herefore, it is exceptional to find
hese hats on the general market.
The hats of current sale cost from a
ew cents up to $25 and $35, while
eery fine ones have been known to
('etch as high as $85.
In buying a Panama, or, more prop
erly speaking, a Jipijapa hat it is neces
ary to ascertain two things that the
oquilla straw is whole and that it is
not stiffened. It is not easy to recog
ize this first condition. In order to
aake two from one the professional
at weavers of the city of Jipijapa
plit the toquilla straw with such per
iction that unless a person is accus
tomed to such examination it is al
most impossible for him to distinguish
tie difference. The second condition
easily recognized, for the poorer
rade of hats are stiffened to make
ine straw firmer and white. Good
oquilla straw is white and stiff enough
ot to need any gum, and only the
.rdinary Panama hats are stiffened.
Panama hats, ranging in price from
"400 to $15 have had a good sale in
'loomsburg, while there are a few
lid to have cost $25 and even $50,
orn here. The supply of the better
1 rade oi Panama hats appears to
ave become exhausted, at least one
f the local dealers was so informed
f one of the big city firms.

American knows Hint the desire to see

The trnit manifests itself in many
wnys. The desire of the Amer"iciin girl

does add a certain attraction to the ex

fair to lose his "rarity value." It is now
reported that the kinrrnf Helgiuni, the
dowager queen of Italy and the crown
prince of Siiiin, to cite only the best
founded reports, are laying plans for
American tours.
Meanwhile the long of Knplnnd gives
special audiences to American hauliers
