The competition of the west has
been rendered especially severe by
the policy of the railroads in making
freight rates relatively low for long
distances,
Having thus become unprolitable in

severe competition of states farther

Even so perishable a commodity as

condition of agriculture in some parts
of the country is the conservatism of
the farmers, their lack of quick ad

lack of effective business planning and
management. The farmers as a class
bave not kept up with the times, but
apart from this it is practically wide
open. Inside are twenty beds, all oc
cupied. More beds will be put in
the hay loft. The barn is to be
slightly warmed from a hot water
plant, but only up to a temperature
of 40 degrees.
"The only other building is the old

among farmers is especially empha
sized with reference to the southern
states and is given as an explanation
of the too exclusive attention to cot

"Another cause assigned for agri
culture depression in the south is the
scarcity of money, the difficulty of
borrowing on real estate security and
the consequent high rates on interest.
It seems to be possible, however, to
borrow money in the south at some
what lower rates of interest than form
erly. The decline in the price of
cotton is of course an important ele
ment in the depression of agriculture
in the south. The inefficiency of negro
labor is assigned as another cause. On
the othei hand it is affirmed that there
is too much good and cheap labor in
. the south. An abundance of labor is

and storm out.

at a constant disadvantage. This la
why, for the past twenty-five years,
thousands of women have been con
fldintj their troubles to us, and our
advice has brought happiness and
health to countless women in the U.S.
Mrs. Chappcll, of Grant Park, 111.,
whose portrait we publish, advises all
suffering women to use Lydia E. l'ink

and womb ; she, therefore, speaks from
knowledge, and her experience oupht
to give others confidence. Address Mrs.
