Queer Method Siiaaesfrd by nil F.n-
llsh I'nrson for Replenishing ,
Ills Treasury.
Clergy-men in charpe of small and
poor congregations frequently find
themselves ham.pered by 5vant of
funds with which to carry on their.
ivork, but it is doubtful if even a fron
tier missionary, 5vho is generally ftc-,
knowledffed to be the most bumpered1
of American ministers, would adopt
the method for increasing his re
sources which an English parson is re
ported to have pursued. This clergy-,
man is in charge of a church at Mill-)
wall and is quoted as offering to give'
any West end church a thorough
spring cleaning, the payment to go to1
his own church funds. In his letter,
announcing his offer the clergyman
says, according to a paragraph in a
Scottish journal: "With the practical
experience I have acquired I can now
heeswax and polish a floor, or varnish
floors iviith anybody, and my wife is
Al at painting nnd decorating." i
The wives of some Am.ericun clergy-!
men, particularly in frontier stations,
could and do tell tales of hardship and
trial, but it is safe to assume that
no matter how low the church treas
ury might be they would hardly be ex
pected to aid in its replenishing by hir--ing-
out to do church cleaning, even if
it were simply "painting and decorat
ing," and not the regular scrub tvork.
HELEN GOULD'S PENNY BANK.
The Wealthy New York Woman Safes
Coppers for Dailies' Fresh- I
Air Fund,
Standing in almost the center of
Helen Gould's white dressing table
In her boudoir and seeming oddly out
of place among the silver-topped toi
let pieces a young lady friend of hers
saw one of those little iron penny
savings banks, such as the children of
the less wealthy commonly have, says
the New York Times.
"Why do you disfigure your dresser
In that fashion?" asked the friend.'
Miss Gould looked at her questioner
with a mild expression of reproach.
"That," said she, "is for my babies.
It's just one of those ordinary little
fresh-air fund boxes. I have pennies
sometimes to save, and why shouldn't
my babies profit by them?"
"You dear thing!" said the girl,
who, as soon as she got home, im-!
pctuously had a five-dollar bill
changed into pennies, 5vhich she for-j
warded to Miss Gould with the fol
lowing note:
"Dear Miss Gould: Here are 500
pennies. Pray fill the box and spare
your dresser,"
She hasn't yet been reproved for
her impertinence. Probably Misa
Gould was able to find some reason
for excusing and forgiving it.
HUMOR OF A BARBER. I
It Expresses Itself In the Character
istic Decorations of Ills Cus- j
tomers' Sliavlnir Maas. ,
The proprietor of a downtown bar
ber shop located on Broad street is
something of a humorist, in his own
peculiar way. On entering the shop
one is confronted by shelves of mugs
belonging to the regulur patrons, and
! the designs on these are decisively
odd.
There are no names or initials to
indicate the respective owners, 5vhieh
apparent omission is a part of the
proprietor's little game. Instead
there is on, each a design illustrative
of the profession, business or occu
pation of the patron. One man who
frequents the shop is a dentist, and
15 j his cup is embellished with a set of
I'I' false teeth as a means of identifica
cMtion. Another is an editor, and the
design on his cup represent a payte
j5pot and shears. A box of cigars on
H'l n nntliei imllenres thnt. Ittt rtwnet In a

cup bears a lyre. There are about 50f
cups thus decoruted.
