t-lnniitl, Cleveland, Toledo, Dayton,
Zanesvllle, Portsmouth, Canton, (Spring
field nnd other cities, the single excep
tion being Columbus, tlie borne of both
Governor Nash nnd Colonel James Kll
bourne, the Democratic candidate for
governor.
The greatest Republican gain are
outside of the large cities. Some of the
Democratic counties report the largest
J((npubllcnn gains. Another exception
in the rural districts was found In l'ike
and Adams counties, which Jointly
elected a Democratic member of the
legislature for the first time In eight
years.
The Democratic state committee has
no claims to make on the state 'ticket or
the legislature. Colonel Kllbourne said
he felt better over carrying his home of
Franklin county with a Democratic
gain of over 3,0(K) than If he had been
elected governor without carrying
Franklin county. Chairman Dick at 10
o'clock gave out a statement that the
Republicans had carried the state by
over .riO,000. with a decisive majority In
each branch of the legislature.
CRANE RE-ELECTED.
A Lartc Vote In the liny State For an
OI Year.
BOSTON, Nov. 0. With no state or
national Issues nnd but few local con
tests to arouse Interest, there were
more ballots cast In the state election
than In any off year lu the history of
the state. The total vote exceeded
300,000.
As usual, the Republicans had no dif
ficulty In carrying the state, V. Mur
ray Crane of Dalton being elected
governor for the third time by prac
tically the same majority as when he
first ran for the ottlce In ISM).
The state legislature of 11K)2 will be
strongly Republican, although the
Democrats gained a few votes. Josluh
Qulncy, the Democratic candidate for
governor, ran about 10,000 behind the
Tote cast for the party caudldate In the
presidential election last year, but he
ao materially Increased the Democratic
vote In Boston as to give the local lead
ers great confidence for a party victory
in the niuulcpal election next month.
The Vote In Pennsylvania.
PHILADELPHIA, Nov. 6. Notwith
standing the Intense Interest the elec
tion In this city was conducted gener
ally In an orderly manner. There were,
however, numerous disputes at polling
places, and In n number of Instances
the disputants came away with broken
beads, but no very serious rows occur
red anywhere. The regular Republic
ans and the fuslonlsts charge each oth
er with wholesale fraud and promise
to make numerous arrests. There wero
many arrests for violations of the elec
tion laws, but In nearly every case the
offender was promptly balled out by
political friends. The polls did not
dose until 7 o'clock, and returns came
to the various political headquarters
Tery late. In the absence of sufficient
figures the city chairmen of the several
political parties continue to claim that
their candidates have carried the city.
Scattering returns Indicate that Potter
(Rep.) for supreme court Is being cut to
some extent all over the state. Re
tarns are unusually slow and very late.
The counting of the vote ou the pro
posed constitutional amendments In
the Interest of ballot reform adds to
the work of the election officers. The
Republican city chairman claims the
election of Weaver by from 33,000 to
60,000 plurality.
The Flection In Mississippi.
JACKSON, Miss., Nov. 0. - The
weather was clear and cold, but as on
ly the offices of state treasurer and sec
retary of state were to be filled little
Interest was manifested In the elec
tion. Private telegrams from the lar
ger towns indicate that the temporary
Incumbents, George W, Carlisle and
Joseph W. Powers, who are appointees
of Governor Longlno, have been elect
ed state treasurer and secretary of
state respectively. Full returns will
not be received for a day or two, as
numerous precincts are off the rail
roads and without telephone connec
tions. All the candidates were Demo
crats. Nebraska Republican.
LINCOLN, Neb., Nov. G.-Iudlcatlons
based on scattering precinct retuuis
are that Nebraska has reaffirmed her
verdict of last year In favor of the Re
publicans. Figures, mainly from the
smaller towns and a few country dis
tricts, show a Republican gain of 4 to
the precinct over a year ago, when the
average Republican majority was
1,800. If these gains are sustained,
Sedgwick (Rep.), for supreme court
Justice, will carry the state by from
6,000 to 10,000. At Republican head
quarters the claim Is made of 10,000,
bat the lndeclsireness of the figures
Is admitted.
Iowa's Lars Flaralltr For Ciaalu
DBS MOINES, la., Nov. 6. Returns
(torn this state came In very slowly,
tbe polls having been held open until 7
o'clock In most precincts. The figures
generally show a Republican sain
which, If continued in the same ratio,
'will make about 81,000 net Republican
'gain in the state and give Cummins, for
, gwvsrnor, a plurality of 87,000.
Maryland Elections,
BALTIMORE, Nov. O.-Returns at
hand show a tremendous falling off In
the vote both In the city and the coun
ties and Indicate that the Democrats
have been victorious In both city and
state, although It Is Impossible to give
any figures because of the meager re
turns. It seems highly probable tlint
no more than 7.",ooo votes have been
polled In Baltimore as ngalust 110.0(H)
cast two years ago at the municipal
elections.
MURPHY ELECTED.
ladlcntlnna Point to Repnbllenn fln-
ralltr In New Jersey of T.OOO.
NEWARK, N. J., Nov. fl. The re
turns received from all points In the
state Indicate that Murphy, Republic
an, for governor, has been elected and
that the election Is now simply a mat
ter of plurality. The returns thus far
received Indicate that Murphy will
have a larger plurality In the state than
Voorhees did three years ago. The Re
publicans claim the state by 10,000.
FRANKLIN MURTIIY.
The returns thus far Indicate the elec
tion of Murphy by at least 7,000.
The returns show that Seymour,
Democrat, for governor, carried Ilud-
son county by 0.000 to 8,000 and that
Kagan, Republican, was elected mayor
of Jersey City.
. In this city Seymour lost his own dls
trlct. The vote stood: Murphy, 348;
Seymour, 197.
Essex county went for Murphy by
probnbly 8,000. The Democratic county
committee "lay down" and did nothing
for Seymour.
Light Vote la Rhode Island.
PROVIDENCE. R. I., Nov. 0. It Is
generally conceded that Governor Greg
ory and the Republican state ticket are
elected by a plurality of about 6,000.
This Is a loss of some 3,000 from last
year. The vote polled through the state
was light.
Democrat Won In Virginia.
RICHMOND, Va., Nov. 6. Returns
are coming In slowly and are Insuf
ficient on which to base majorities, but
all Indications point to victory for the
Democrats.
A Roer Colony In Wynmlnyr.
CHJ2YENNE. Wy., Nov. 1. A num
ber of Hague bankers and other
wealthy men of Holland are making
arrangements to establish a colony of
Boers and Holland Dutch In Wyoming.
A tract of 300,000 acres has been se
cured In the valley of the Green river
In Sweetwater county, southern Wyo
ming. Surveys have been made for a
gigantic canal and Irrigation system,
and construction Is to be commenced
at once. The prospective settlers are
now being brought over to do the
work. Tests have been made which
Bhow that the soil Is especially well
adapted for beet sugar culture, and a
large beet sugar factory will be estab
lished In the colony.
