    THE COLUMBIAN, BLOOMSBURG, PA.
Made Himself a
Human Toboggan
Unconscious, borne, over crevasses nml glaciers In the urtns of cninnno
ions, nml finally, when hope was almost pone, saved by the (luring1 inven
, tion and heroic feat of one man who turned himself into a human tobog
gan, Miss Bethel Kuwuon, of Detno.su, Ore., arrived below the snow line on
Mount Hood tho other night after a des-ent unparalleled In the history of
mountain climbing'.
Misst Kawson won one of a party of 25 who started to mnke the ascent
of Mount Hood. The climb to tho crater is a desperate one. The Tucoma
correspondent of the Chi
cago. Tribune describe
the adventure as follows:
At noon, when the yarty
had reached a point 300
yards below the crater
roek, a blizzard swept over
the peak. Kxhausted by
the climb jind overcome
by the intense cold Miss
ItawRoti becatnu uncon
scious. (Jails were Rent for as
sistance from those who
liad already reached the
summit, and the men
rushed down and carried
Miss Itawpon and her
companion, Miss Julia
Hall, who was still able to
walk, to a wore sheltered
spot, where an effort was
made to revive the uncon
scious pirl.
Finally the great snow
field Itelow the crater was
reached. Hy this time the
men had begun to fear
thHt Miss Kuwson would
never survive the journey,
and the need of getting
her to shelter and warmth
became every minute more
Imperative.
The party halted in de
spair. Then Prof. McElfresh, of Corvallis, Ore., suggested that a sled be
built out of n rough board on which .Miss liawson hud been carried for a
time and the heavy sacks in which she had been wrapped to save her from
freezing. The suggestion was adopted nt once. lsing ropes and twine,
handkerchiefs, and cloth from clothes, n rude sled was hastily improvised.
Prof. MeKlfrcsh offered to be strapped to the board nnd to curry tho girl
while the other men of the party propelled the sled over the snow. I'rof.
McKlfresh, in a sitting position, clung to the irl while the others tugged
and pulled. The scheme was tried for perhaps half an hour, but it wa
seen the girl could not stand the exposure much longer nnd survive.
I'rof. Me-EIfresh then came forward with another suggestion. He pro
. posed to make himself n huniun toboggan, to hold the girl in his arms,
while he, stretched on nnd strapped to the plank, would make the attempt
to coast down the mountain side.
As there was no other chance, the party accepted the suggestion, dan
gerous as it was. Trof. McKlfresh, stretched at full length.'was tightly
bound to the board, ropes were rigged that he might have a chance to guide
his toboggan, then Miss Itawson's unconscious body was strapped tightly
down upon his prostrate form, feet to feet and body to body.
The other men poised the toboggan on the edge of the steep, gave it
a shove, and the man and girl shot out over the glacier and-down through
the snow.
The descent wns made like a flash.
When the timber line was reached the professor, cutting himself loose,
worked over the girl until the rest of the pnrty made the dscent.
Then the party carried Miss Ifuwson to the Muzinn camp, whore the
women took the girl in charge, wrupped her in hot blankets, placed hot
water bottles to her feet, and poured stimulants and hot broth between
her lips until consciousness returned. Later Dr. Young, of Seattle, was
summoned anil to-day Miss liawson is rapidly recovering from her terrible
experience.

Mrs. Myra Trumbull, of Gainestown,

from her husband, John T. Trumbull,
on the grounds t hat John was a prac

John never flirted with chorus girls,
or staid out late at night, or drank
until friends carried him home, or
chased her with a stove poker. John
was always a good and! faithful help

funny to put cold clammy frogs in bis
wife's bed ond put castor oil in the
chocolnte cake that she took to a
church picnic.
John was so playful thnt he thought

Then he told his wife that her mother
had arrived and gone up to her room.
Mrs. Trumbull burst into the spare
bedroom with a glnd cry of "mother"
and kissed the cow three times before
she discovered that she hud been de
ceived und hooked in the eye. At one
time when mother-in-law really did
come, for a nice long visit, John had a
carpenter fix the stairs so that they
folded up liko a shutter and the llrt
trip that mother-in-law made down
them resulted in her breaking two
ribs. Mrs. Trumbull thinks that John
is too funny for any use.

Congress the boys understood to be

Young Mr. lioscha first came into
prominence nbout a year ago by the
arrest of a Mexican for whom the offi

He and another Mexican had fought a
