Want Game Laws Changed-
The many subordinate granges
throughout Pennsylvania will petition
the governor and the state legislature
to give the land owner fuller control
over his premises with reference to
killing and trapping game. It is
contended that the land owner should
have first right. The game seasons
being short, the agriculturist cftimes
is busy engaged with his work, and
consequently the "sportsman" cap
tures all the game. At the same time
this "sportsman" parades over the
cultivated grounds of the agriculturist
at his own will and frequently does
considerable damage. The memorial
asks that hunting on cultivated grounds
be made Dermissible only when writ
ten consent is given by the owner.
The complaints set forth in the peti
tion are correct and will be favored
' by every land owner and true sports
man.
Lnmbor (Supply Bearing Its End-
The American Lumberman pub
lishes some figures which should stir
congicss ai,! state legislatures to
prompt action touching toe preserva
tion of American forests. They ought
also to move owners of forest lands to
consider whether self interest would
not require them to take steps to pre
vent the destruction of their industry.
In 1800 the states of Michigan,
Wisconsin and Minnesota produced
8,597,000,000 feet of pine lumber.
Since then the product has steadily
declined and In 1900 was but 5,485,-
201,000 feet. During the last two
yearspnees of lumber have been
high, and there has been every induce
ment for the mills to turn out a heavy
product. Every resource has been
strained, but without avail. The trees
could not be found. The end of the
white pine industry of the northwest
is almost at hand. The years of its
greatness are already passed.
Whi'e the destruction of the forests
in the states named has perhaps been
more rapid tnan elsewhere by reason
of the proximity to markets and favor
able shipping facilities, all forest sec
tions of the country are suffering
irreparably from the woodman's ax.
Chief Geographer Gannett of the
United States geological survey, from
the best data obtiinable, estimates
the total stand of timber thtoughout
the United States at 1,380,000,000,
000 feet. In 1800 the cut was about
25,000,000,000 feet, and since that
time it has steadily increased througn
out the country at large, though de
creased in some sections by reason of
the practical exhaustion of the supply,
At the present rate of consumption
the availaDle supply will last not to
exceed 50 years and perhaps not so
long as that. The present generation
is likely to feel the pinch of scarcity.
Aside from the meteorological influ
ences of land denudationand its effect
upon the water courses there is shame
ful waste of natural wealth which is
justly a part of the heritage of coming
generations. The preservation of the
yet remaining forests is one of the
most important matters to which legis
lators, state and national, can direct
their wisdom and energy.

Standard books are ever welcome
when they come to us in forms and
bindings representing all the embel
lishments of the art of bookmaking.
Such a book is ''Our New Possess
ions," published by the Dominion
Co., Chicago, a copy of which has
just come to our desk. The contents
are well arranged, the illustrations are
fine, the print is clear and neat and
the binding is superb. The Domin
ion Co. is forging ahead as the leading
western publishing house making a
specially of fine subscription books.
Having salespeople in nearly every
nook of the country, the company en
joys a large and growing trade. As
this company has a, known reputation
for liberality towards its agents and
fair treatment of them, an agency in
this community for the above book,
or some other published by this com
pany, would be a source of consider
able profit to the one fortunate enough
to secure it. Interested readers
should write the company for full par

How frladly would men fly to wo

and peculiar organic disturbances.
Those things are known only to
women, and the aid a man would give
is not at his command.
To treat a case properly it is neces
