Mrs. John Fruit, a former resi dent of Jersey town, died on the 2nd inst at Steward, Illinois. I!er maid en name was Harriet N. Barber, and she was born in this county. Elysburg, where the only in dustry, I'ensyl's tannery, was re cently destroyed by fire, proposes to organize a fire company. There are over sixty dwellings and about 500 inhabitants, and some protec tion against fire is necessary. - - The new quarters of the Order of Klks on tfce third floor of Mrs. Ent's building, are commodious, and handsomely furnished. The carpets were furnished by W. II. Brower. The Muncy Democrat began its fifth volume last week. Editor H. II. Rutter has made it a success, and it is now recognized as the Democratic organ of that section of the county. It is bright and newsy, and has a prosperous future before it. A young lady of near town was greatly embarrassed a few evenings ago when she brought her beau into the house and found the room in possession of a litter of young pigs which escaped from a box un: de-r the stove where they had been placed for protection from the cold weather. Lee, gen eral passenger agent of the com pany, and will bring the Lacka wanna into prominence m a portion of the city not heretofore reached. William H. Gilmore has moved into Hotel Gilmore, recently va cated by G. W. Enterline, and is preparing to open an eating house, where he will serve oysters in all styles, and all the other various kinds of food usually found in a first-class restaurant. He was in the business for many years, and the reputation of his place was wide spread. Mrs. Gilmore's chicken and fried oysters were celebrated, and many people will be glad to know that they can get them again. Mr. Gilmore will keep the best oysters in the market, and will supply fam ilies as in former days. Mrs. Anna E. Furman died at the home of her son-in-law, Charles R. Mendenhall, on East Main street, last Friday morning at half-past seven o'clock. She was the widow of the late Watts W. Furman. For many years past she has been an invalid, but was well enough to go to Sunbury to visit frieuds, where she was taken ill and brought home several weeks ago. She was aged nearly sixty-five years. Three children survive her, na.nely: Mrs. C. R. Mendenhall and Hope Fur man of this town, and Edward Fur man. of Shenandoah. The funeral was held on Saturday afteruoon.the services being conducted by Rev.D. N. The funeral was held on Sunday, at the Christian Church. Rohrsburg. Jonas Ilelwig died at his home near Newlin on Sunday morning, aged 36 years. A wife and four chidren survive him. The funeral was held "n the Reformed Church at Numidia on Wednesday. Vannatta, and it is expected that it will be completed tomorrow. The walls and ceiling are of delicate shades of blue, and the wood work is cream color. It will have a very pleasing eflect when done. - There is but one candidate for President of Town Council, and that is Frank Ikeler. He was first agreed upon by the Board of Trade as an acceptable candidate, and sub sequently nominated by the Demo crats. O. W. Cherington, the Re publican nominee, declined to ac cept, and the vacancy has not been j filled, so Mr. Ikeler has a clear field. He has made an excellent official during the past year. . . According to the sixth accounting of the estate of Asa Packer, the millionaire coal magnate and bene factor of Lehigh University, who died in 1879, which was filed with register of wills in Philadelphia re cently, the executors have made good investments and realized splendidly on them. GYMNASTIC DISrLAT- Annual Event of the Physical Training De partment ol the Normal. The eighth annual gymnastic display of the Physical Training Department of the Normal School will take place Thursday evening, February 21st, in the Normal Gymnasium. The pro gram will contain some numbers new to this department. Fencing has been one ot the features of the work this year. An exhibition of class and as sault fencing will be given by graduate students. A class of seventy-eight girls will give a drill with Lounding balls. Nothing of this kind has ever been given in Bloonisburg, and prom ises to be a pleasing feature of the exhibition. Forty boys will present a torch club effect, in which flaming fire will be swung to the strains of music. The special number will consist of artistic steps by 24 girls. They have been practicing since the holidays and will show some work never before at tempted in the Normal Gymnasium. Horizontal bar, parallel bars, squad work on the other pieces of heavy apparatus, will illustrate that part of the gymnasium plan. Indian club duets by Messrs. Armstrong and Funk. The program is unique in that the usual dumb bell, wand and Indian clubs, will be replaced by other pieces of apparatus. This promises to be the best exhibition yet held by the directors of the Normal School Gym nasium. LINCOLN'S BIRTHDAY Ent Post and the ladies ot the G. A. R. will celebrate the anniversary of the birth of Abraham Lincoln at their post room, on Friday evening of this week at 8 o'clock. An interest ing program has been prepared by the ladies consisting of old time war songs and addresses appropriate to the oc casion. An admission of ten cents will be taken at the door, which will include refreshments which will be given dur ing the evening. Ice cream extra. SURPRISE PARTI. A surprise party was given for James (loss at the home of V. V. Barrett on Third and Railroad streets on the 9th inst , to celebrate his birth day.
