Stnilrnt Life.
Helen Keller, the deaf, dumb and
blind girl, has overcome tremendous
obstacles nnd is now progressing well
as a student nt Kndclifl'e, says nil ex
change. The bulk of her prepnrntlon for
college was accomplished under Ar
thur Oilman's Instruction, nided by
Miss Sullivan, for severnl years' her
teacher. Ily the employment of sev
eral ingenious instruments she mas

with raised letter books she has se

recpiired subjects, Miss Keller hns
entered Knduliffe with freshman Kng

At the lectures Helen Is Invariably
accompanied by Miss Sullivan, who
sits close beside her nnd gives her, In
the mnntinl language, whatever the
Instructor mny be saying. The fine
ness of her soul and the exquisite na
ture of her thoughts are evidenced
by the essays written during her
preparation.
For all Helen Keller's remnrtrnil.
intellectuality she is. In the main, just
a pleasant, normal girl. She rides a
tandem, sews, crochets, embroiders,
and, most marvelous of all, plnyg a
capital gnme of chess. She is with
out doubt the most wonderful college
girl the world hns yet seen.

Take the old system In Its most mon

grammar by heart before translating
any Latin author, says Dean Briggs, of
Harvard university, in the Atlantic.
Nobody now defends a practice so
tupid; jet that wonderful feat of
memory strengthened many a memory
for other wonderful feats. The boy
who mustered Andrews and Stoddard
knew tlie power of patient effort, the
strength of drudgery, well done.
Through a natural reaction, memory
is underrated now. Education at the
time when memory Is trained easiest
and best must be saved from the bar
renness of memory work and must be
"enriched." Kven the multiplication
table is threatened with banishment.

Hall's Family Pills are the best.
The better elements among the peo
ple of I'.erlin ns well ns the entire re
ligious population are indignant at the
persistent attacks of a large portion
of the press on Chinese missions and
missionaries. The aspersion cast on
the missionaries, It is pointed out, do
not rest on any basis of fact. The
charges are nil vague and are usually
repetitions of travelers' hasty report!
or utterances of second-rnte diploma
tists out of sympathy with Christiani
ty, says a London pnper.
The greatest regret Is expressed by
newspapers representative of militant
Christianity that responsible organs ol
public opinion, like the Vosslsehe
Zeitung, the Cologne Gazette and oth
ers, should lend themselves to thta
chorus of abuse of Chinese mission
aries. One can understand that savage
hordes of heuthen will readily massa
cre men of a different religious per
suasion, especially if these men nre un
armed, nnd if their lives ore a pro
test against violence and crime in all
their forms, but thnt journalists should
be found !n a Christian country ready
to trample on men whose aims nre a
noble ideal, w ho have sacrificed all they
possess for their cause, and at Inst
life itself, is one of the saddest signs
of the times.
It is recognized here that these press
attacks mostly originate in circles
which are not only opposed to mission
ary methods in China, but to the mis-'
ions themselves, their object and end.

BAD TASTE IN PULLMAN CARS.
Their Interior -oorn.t lona Show the

In Ladies' Home .Tournnl Edwnrd
Bok sharply criticises the interior
decorations of Pullman cars an "a riot
of bnd taste," thnt is nbsolutely Ine
cusnble, for "the Pullmun company,"
he contends, "is a rich corporation
which can hare whnt it wills. If good
taste does not exist In Its furnishing
department, as indisputably seems to
be the case, the company can and
should buy it. For the same nmounts
now expended on these cars, effects of
harmony and of truly artistic drnpery
could be obtained which would be a
credit to the eompany. These cars
could have an incalculable influence on
the community. The new enrs which
the company constantly builds could,
better thnn nny other medium thnt I
know of, be made to reflect in a pano
ramic manner the newest nnd most
progressive steps made in artistic deco
ration nnd furnishing. They could be
made the most effective traveling edu
cators of the public. Instead, they are
simply vehicles of the worst taste im
aginable in fact, of no tnste whntever.
As nniiizlng conglomerations of the
most glaring nnd grossest inhnrmonies
of color, they stand absolutely su
preme. They violate even the simplest
canons of good taste."
