free wood yard, which has been
opened in that city, it is said by
order of the Mayor.

The Ninth Reeiment Band of
Wilkesbarre, has been engaged to
furnish the music for the fair. In
wder to get this organization it was
necessary to give them the whole
three days. To secure them for
one day was an utter impossibility.

Samples of the baking powder
used by Mrs. Prank V hitmeyer of
Soreno, in making a chocolate cake
which was supposed to have caused
the poisoning of herself and family
as reported in the papers some time
ago, has been analyzed by a chemist
of Phi adclphu. It was found to
contain alum.

Mrs. Catharine Brown, of Miff
linville, aged about eighty-nine
vears, died Friday night- She was
the widow of the late Jacob Brown,
and is survived by two sons and

Mifllinville, with whom she had
been living, II. H. Brown, of Main
ville, aiuLMrs. J. W. John, of Main
township.

cured a good position as a school
teacher in Wayne county.

The pipe organ in St. Paul's
church is being repaired today, and
will be used on Sunday. Thirty
six mice have been caught in the
church, and it is likely that no
more damage will be done by them.
There will be regular services at
St. James', on Sunday, October 7,
10:15 a.m. And as txtelisive im
provements have been made on the
Zion Church, a rc-opening service
will be held there on the same day,
at 2:30 p. m.
Prof. 0. E. Wilbur on Monday
sent a check for $50.00 to Gov.
Sayres, of Texas, to be devoted
to the fund for the relief of the suf
ferers at Galveston. It was a vol
untary contribution of members ot
the Royal Arcanum.

The condition of George Kvans,
who was seriously injured at the
Carpet Mill, last Thursday morn
ing, is much improved. He was
in a semi conscious condition for
two days after the accident. His
recovery now is highly probable.

day afternoon. Stevenson, the

The death of Mrs. Elisha Myers,
an esteemed lady, occurred at an
early hour Tuesday morning of last
week at her home in Cambra after
weeks of suffering from dropsy and
heart trouble. Funeral was held on
Thursday with services at Register
and interment at Pine Grove ceme
terv. Mrs. Mvcrs leaves an aged
husband, several sisters and broth
ers to mourn her loss.
A. M. Wintersteen was last week
subpoenaed by the Commonwealth
and later by the defendant as a wit
ness in the trial of Arthur Brown
charged with killing Frederick
Kline on the Fourth of July. The
trial is going on at Sunbury this
week. Mr. Wintersteen is the star
witness. He was an onlooker of
the tragedy, and the first person to
nick Kline up after he had been hit
