TBE CHINESE SITUATION. Late dispatches from China state that Ministers and other foreigners in Pekin are in a deperate situa tion. There are riity thousand Chinese troops inside and outside the city, and the food of the for eigners is almost exhausted. Baron Von Ketteler, the German Minister, has been murdered by the Chinese troops, and the Kaiser will despatch 20,0.0 troops and many war ships to China. Several thousand Amer ican soldiers and sixteen war ves sels are already on Chinese soil and waters, and more will be sent. The Oregon has struck a rock and may be a total loss. Russia, England and Germany, also have many troops and vessels there. The sit uation is one heretofore unknown in the history of the world. The trouble began with the attack on foreigners by the Boxers, a native organization opposed to foreign oc cupation. The failure of the Chi nese government to protect mission aries and other foreigners, led the several nations whose citizens were in danger, to send troops there for their protection. Though occupy ing Chinese soil, and engaging in battle with the natives, war has not been declared by any of them, and this is the anomaly of the situation. Where it is all going to end no one can predict. , . . SATIOSAL CZ1TD3EATIC C0S7E5- The Democratic National Con vention met in Kansas City yester day. The nomination of William Jennings Bryan for President is a foregone conclusion. No other name is mentioned. For the Vice-Pre-idency a n.'.mber of names have been discussed, among them Hill of New York. Gorman of Maryland. Pattisoa of Pennsylvania, Admiral Schley, Admiral Dewey and Towne of Minnesota. Should the platform contain aNsilver 16 to 1 plank, it is likely that Towne will be the nom inee. Many prominent leaders like Gutfey and Hill, have endeavored to secure a modification of the Chicago platform of 1896. but ap parently without success. We go to press too early to give any details of the convention. I WO HUNDBLD LIVES LOSTBf FiEE- One of the most horrible disasters in many years occurred at Hobo ken on Saturday. Some bales of cotton oil the North German-Lloyd Steamship Company's pier caught tire, and tbe flames spread so rap idly that they communicated to sev eral ocean liners, and the men on the piers and in the holds of the vessels were caught in a death trap. The heat was so great that tugs and other boats could not get near enough to rescue but a few. It is estimated that two hundred lives were lost, and the loss in money is :o,ooo, coo. The steamers Saale, Main and Bremen, were destroved, and the Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse was badly damaged. The latter is next to the largest vessel afloat. -- Fanrers Yictiaiiiid. A number of farmers in the vicinity of M-ncy, have been victimized by a party of men representing themrelves to be of the -Bill Bearing Churn Company," selling a churn that would make butter inside of two minutes. The men ave demonstrations and sold their churns at i 7 each and also disposed of territorial rights at a price as high as The farmers tried to make butter with the churns and found that they could not do so under an hour's time. They have come to the conclusion that the men who victi mized them used chemicals to mate the butler gather. They now find that tne paper tr.ey save the men has been negotiated. The sharpers cleared up about $2500 in that section.
