    THE COLUMBIAN, BLOOMSBURG, PA.
Prof- Coles for May.
Let all the people in America re
joice ami be glad, for the month of
May will be a great "high flood"
month and prosperity will rule in spite
of all the afflictions that the jealous
"low-ebb" vual forces may choose to
send upon her I The greater part of
the month will be fair and lovely; but
the planets are in position to give us
some unprecedented stormsj resulting
in destructive floods. Snow storms
and hail storms may surprise us all; as
the sun's magnetic and electric focus
will be interferred with by the sleet
king planets and cause severe electri
cal storms, seismic disturbances and
volcanic activity in the earth. Watch
out for strange phenomena, as the
plannetts will be in a very unusual
position this month. About the
middle of the month Venus, Earth,
Jupiter, and Uranus, will make a per
feet right angle with Mars, Mercury
and the Sun, while Neptune and Sat
urn will be in conjunction with each
other and the Sun. On the 27th, the
Earth passes between the sun and the
great planet Jupiter; and on the 28th,
the eclipse will appear; therefore, it
will be well for us to keep a watchful
eye upon the "weather" and upon our
"finance," as unusual disturbances
may be looked for during the middle
and the latter part of the month.

A Sad Truth.
An exchange says that gossip has
made manny a home a hell on earth;
gossip has parted husbands and wives;
gossip has blackened and sullied the
character of many poor girls; gossip
has parted lovers who would have
been very happy if it had not been for
gossip, une little misstep or one
little indiscretion will cause gossip to
arise with new strength and start on
her mission. Her, did we say ? We
ought not to, for we have our male
gossipers, and as a rule they are ten
times more venomous than a female.
A good, healthy man gossiper is about
s low and dangerous as the meanest
thing on earth.

Hitherto the Kussinn calendar has

If the Protestant states in tlie west

the dillieull ies whieh the corps en

wagons, each clrnwn by six mules,
were loaded with rubber insulated
wire, n battery nnd n reel to reel it
out. keeping up with the troops.
The road became so bail they had to
strap the reel on a mule's back nnd
the rest of the wire on other mules,
leaving the wagon in the mud up to
the hubs.
One mule carried the folding field
telegraph table, with instruments all
attached. Every few miles they
would stop nnd telegraph back to
Manila the progress of the column.
To do so they would take the table
off the mule, unfold it, cut the wiro
from the reel on the other mule,
connect it. with the instruments and
do the necessary telegraphing. This'
was generally done when the troops
stopped for a few minutes to rest.
