A cold blooded murder was com
mitted on the streets of Lewisburg
late Saturday night, when Newton
Mollz, without any cause whatever,
plunged a huge knife into the back
of his companion, Jacob Remer.
He fell to the pavement and expired
in a few minutes. Moltz is in jail.
Sapho will be at the Opera House
on Saturday, April 28th. The
original version that is meeting with
enormous success wherever it is
presented. The Daily Saratogan
speaks as follows :
The play may or may not have
been pruned. The manager ad
monished the star in the presence
of Chief of Police Blodget to use
her discretion, and this doubtless
meant that certain sentences in the
dialogue should be forgotten.
Scenically, the play was barren of
suggestiveness. The manager, F.
L,. Goodwin, said that to use the
ball room and staircase scene would
have been an infringement of the
New York version which .the po
lice, prompted by some newspapers,
have just suppressed. Manager
Goodwin maintained that he had
nothing offensive in the show and
that it was not salacious enough to
suit New York.
A performance similar to that of
last night s would not have been
suppressed in anyplace. Through
out the six acts there was nothing
that would bring legitimate blushes
to even sensitive cheeks. In the
fourth and fifth acts, Miss Effie
Elting rose to the requirements of
the occasion and demonstrated the
possession of emotional abilities of
a high oraer. A woman with a
scarlet past, she was not to be en
vied. Her impassioned revilement
of old-time lothario friends who had
flaunted her disgrace in the face of
her latest viclim or lover, was, tech
nically, a fine piece of acting.
There was not a single one in the
group who was morally qualified to
throw the first stone. Jean Gaus
sin's infatuation became more blind
at this point and the curtain drop
ped on their embrace.
The last act is a test to show
whether a woman of the type of
Fannie Legrand can have any re
morse or dread the penalty of retri
bution. Perhaps fallen angels can
be reincarnated, and if they are,
' 'Sapho' ' has a chance. Outside of
the experiences of the past and the
environment of the occasion, the
finale is affecting to the pathetic
point. Mention should be made of
the realistic presentation of the part
of "Caroudal," the sculptor, who
it was that in derision and con
tempt born of experience first call
ed the fatally shapely Fanny Le
Grand "Sapho."

P. II. FRKKZK, )
WM. KUICKHAUM, S AUDITORS.
GEO. K. WILlllJR, )
In signing the above report I must, hoJ
ever, object to the issuing of 15.ooO.00ol
order for borrowed money, because
same is contrary to law, anil that said ot
ders are invalid j and further, that jt has
Le.'ii observed that one member of Couiwl
has a bill of $109.00, at fa. 00 per dny, whil
other members have furnished material and
done woik, both in a direct nnd indire.t uy,
and it has been ascertained that meinln-'rt
have done work on the streets and the sr.ine
has been returned as done by other pari:
Prom the nature and condition of things it
impossible for ihe board of auditors,
board, to make the investigation necessary l
make a full and complete report, thus leav
ing it to the citizens of the town to furlhef
investigate, if they deem it proper to do so-
I do this on the ground that one member
of the board of auditors has no authority l
employ counsel, or order a full and carelu
investigation to ue made.
