been no definite clue that will lead to
the conviction ot the parties who set
fire to Dyke's barn, and Davis' block
of houses at Centralia last Friday
night. Mr. Dyke and Mr. Davis both
offered a reward, aggregating $300 for
such evidence- as will lead to the
arrest and conviction of the guilty
party.
"VVe know, or feel sure that we
know, who the guilty parties are,"
said one of Centralia's leading men to
a man from the Ashland Advocate to
day, "but we have not got the evi
dence that will convict them. We
expect to get it, nowever, ana 11 we
do you can depend upon it that Mr.
Dyke, and Mr. Davis can get all the
moral and financial support that they
may need to push the prosecutiou to
the bitter end.
"What we need, however, at Cen
tralia" he continued, "is a vigilance
committee. It should be organized at
once, and then there are about a
dozen fellows in our town who should
be given twenty four hours to quit the
place, and if they don't go they should
be strung up to tne nearest lamppost.
I know that this is making it pretty
strong, but the case is a desperate
one, and requires a desperate remedy.
We can point out about a dozen fel
lows who are responsible for nearly all
the lawlessness in our town, and which
has given us the reputation of being
one of the worst communities in the
State, and not as I must admit, with
out reason. The thing is going from
bail to worse every day, and there is
no telling where it is going to stop
unless something on the line that I
have indicated is done.
"It is positively unsafe now for
people to venture out alter nightfall,
as they not only run the risk of being
insulted, but beaten anil robbeil as
well. Strangers are almost afraid to
come into our town and you seldom
see any ol them here after nightfall.
Some of these young thugs and
they are nearly all young men do not
hesitate to rob and steal in broad day
light, and their special prey is poor
and inoffensive foreigners, whom they
pick quarrels with for the mere fun of
beating and robbing them,
'I could detail enough petty thiev
ing and minor crimes to fill your paper
and would not have to rack my brain
very hard to do it. Only last week it
was found that thieves had broken
open an empty house owned by the
Lehigh Valley Coal Company, and
stole everything portable in the place,
even to the doors and window sash.
Another case was that of a woman go
ing home from the store with a basket
of groceries. She was stopped by two
young rascals who took her goods, and
she narrowly escaped bodily injury be
cause of her protests. It is a frequent
occurence to hear of men and women
bavins their purses snatched out of
their hands while making chance at
the stage trolley transfer stations,
and to have their wages stolen from
them when coming home from the
eollery office.
"You lemember that it is only a
couple of years ago since a man was
shot dead in his saloon right in the
heart of our town, and in the most
heartless and cold blooded manner. I
doubt whether there is another town

A bright, fresh, sunny face is always
inspiring, and it always denotes good
health as well as a happy heart. Many
faces that were once oveicast with
gloom have been made bright and
sunny by Hood's Sarsaparilla, which

The director of the census has or
dered that no assessor, tax collector
or justice of the peace shall be ap
pointed as an enumerator. He has
also directed that the names ot the
enumerators be withheld from publi
cation. This is done for the protec
tion of the enumerators from the
flood of advertisements with which
they would be afflicted if their names
should be made public. They would
be solicited to become agent for all
kinds of patent medicines, farming
implements, etc., and this would in
terfere with their work.
Journalistic Innocence,
The innocent saffron journals have
been imposed upon once more. The
New York yellow sheets lay clat.11 to
immense stories of enterprise, but all
the time '.hey d solay a ready gullibil
ity that must be a sore temptation tor
Gotham goldbnckers.
On April 1st, 11 Progresso Italo
Americano printed an alleged dis
patch hot from the banks of the an
cient Tiber, telling about the declara
tion of an Italian republic and the
sudden and disordered flight of King
Humbert to Corsica, no doubt to
consult the shade of one N. Bona
parte, who once found himself in
somewhat similar trying circumstances.
The lingo of Italy seems to be beyond
the ken of some of the Enterprising
Ones, but two papers bit promptly at
this tempting bait, and next morning
each of them printed real nice half
tones of the unfortunate ex-potentate,
and in cablegrams from "special Ro
man correspondents," told under
eight-inch headlines, the sad tale of
another king out of a job.
But the rude man who publishes
Progresso spoiled it all the next day.
He expressed deep sutprise that tne
story had not turned out to be true,
because it was merely a first of April
offering to his readers, and he hoped
that his enterprising and honest con
temporaries who had so readily swal
lowed his early spring joke, would not
suffer from indigestion.
Those careless "special Roman cor
respondents" should be sharply looked
after, especially around the first ot
April.

"The trouble is to a great extent
due to the laxity of the courts of our
county. Law is nothing more than a
farce and punishment a fake, with
many of those who are sent to the

many young criminals here who have
served time in our county jail, and
came home telling the most interest
