THE COLUMBIAN, BLOOMSBURG, PA. Tbe Kitter Murder. On the afternoon of September 6th, 1897, Amos Rittcr, aged seventy years a well to-do farmer of Delaware town ship, visited Watsontown and exhib ited a large sum of money. At night fall he started home afoot, early the next morning he was found murdered ia a field near his home, and the money gone. The prepetrator of the crime is still at large and the mystery remains unsolved to this day. Since the arrest and conviction of William Hummel for the murder of his wife and children, it has been charged that he was the murderer of old man Ritter. It will also be recollected that Ri'ter's body was found lying in a field, some distance away from the house, and this is rather a singular coincidence with the Hummel tragedy. It is known that Hummel was in the vicinity ot the old blacksmith's home the night he was killed and also that the rag peddlar lelt the house at which he was staying early in the evening and did not return until midnight. When asked where he had been, Hummel is alleged to have replied, "Oh I was just out calling." Hummel on his part denies strenu ously that he killed Ritter. He has been questioned about it several times and invariably says he knows not.iing whatever about it. He de clares he was not near the scene of the murder at the time it was com mitted and asserts that he would own up like a man if he did it, because he don't want to leave this world with a lie on his lips. "I can only die once," he says, "so what need I be afraid of? If I did it I would say so, but I didn't. Timely Suggestion, It is timely, in view ot the approach of Arbor day, to call attention to an old act of assembly which provides "that any person liable to road tax who shall transplant along a public highway, on his own premises, any fruit, shade or forest trees, of suitable size, shall be allowed by the super visor wnose roads run through or ad joining cultivated fields, in abatement of his road tax, $1.00 for every four trees set out." The abatement, how ever, is limited to one fourth ot such person's road tax each year. Here is an incentive for the observation of Arbor day In the country. A Perfect Oathaatio Is one which does not wrench the system, or leave it weak and ex hausted. A perfect cathartic is found in HooJ's Pills. They are praised everywhere, and after once being tried rthey soon permanently take the place of the old fashioned drastic pills, such ts "our grandfathers used." Hood's Pills are the only pills to take with Hood's Sarsaparilla and they greatly aid that medicine in its cleansing and purifying work. Will Test the Bicycle Law. Wheelmen are interested greatly in the proceedings that have been begun in court at Norristown to test the power of the bicycle side path com missioners to levy a tax on bicycles and idcidentally to determine the constitutionality of the act of assemb ly under which they were appointed. The outcome of the proceedings will be looked for with much interest by the wheelmen of the state. AGENTS WANTED To sell the Marsh Reading Stand and Revolv ing Book Case. The Puerto Rlcan tariff has had the effect of cutting tho Republican party In two. McKlnley himself does not know what Imperialism is. "President McKlnley has committed the first almost irrepnrablo mistake of his administration," and "a mistake big with the possibilities of serious dis aster for his party in this year's elec tions. It may not Jeopardize his own nomination," Mr. nohlsunt goes on, but It "puts a whip In the hands of every Democratic speaker with which to scourge Republican congressmen wherever they appear for re-election. If congress and the president persist in their present course nothing can save the Republican pnrty from defeat next November. It will surely cost them the house of representatives and it may cost them the presidency." Chi cago Times-Herald, Rep. The ratification of the treaty of peace with Spain brought Puerto Rico and the Philippines under tho consti tution, according to the precedents es tablished by decisions of the supreme court, and it Is impossible to ignore the situation thus created. Puerto Rico should be constituted at once as a territory of the United States. And holding the comfort, happiness and prosperity of Puerto Rico In our hands and possibly the lives of the people, no prejudiced notions of "protection" should lend America Into an unjust course toward a defenseless people Whatever may be done in the case of the Philippines our duty to Puerto Rico is plain and unmistakable. Head vllle Morning Star, Ind. Rep. There la larger need than ever in our nation's history for the old time reso lute independence of character and po Iitlcal Judgment which once character ized the American farmer. Fifty years ago the present corrupt party boss, with his assessment of corporations and control of legislation, would not have stood for a moment before tho courageous farm Judgment of the country. Today this political mer chant, who trades in the temple on the political and material fortunes of his fellows, has fastened, octapua like, on the nation and exercises a most dan gerous power In state and national legislatures. The sentiment of the farming class is no longer regarded by the political boss with the wholesome dread that ought to exist. This is lurgely due to a serious decline among farmers of Individual Independence, of political thought and action, a sub stitution of mere party for patriotic standards of Judgment. Hon. William D. Hoard, President of the National Farmers' Congress. The Puerto Rico bill is the first leg islative translation of expansion into a language undcrstanded of tbe peo pie. They see now what all the rhetoric means. Expansion promised glory, and it produces brutality. It is asked for bread and it gives a stone. Under the cruel whip of the organiza tion which controls the organization the party of moral ideas has been driven against the moral sense of the country, has given its opponents heart and hope, and enters upon the presi dential campaign divided and dis credited. President McKlnley's attl tude in this whole matter is to be dis cussed on higher than personal grounds. The poor figure he cuts as a man we pass by, but as the Incum bent of a great offlee ho has brought humiliation upon it as well as upon himself. To "stand by" him is impos sible for his most earnest supporters Binee he does not stand by himself. No man can servo two masters, nor a sin gle master with two minds, neither of which ho himself knows. "I had hoped," sneered a Democrat In the house yesterday, "that there was one question of jfhich the president was not on both sides." There was no an swer to the taunt, for there could be none. What a pity that Mr. McKlnley forgot that a handful of tobacco grow ers and stigiir producers had no right to usurp the office of president of the United States. New York Evening Post.
