3 THE COLUMBIAN, BLOOMSBURG. PA. WASHINGTON. From our Regular Correspondent. Washington, Nov. 13, 1899. "A Bryan triumph" is what nearly every democrat and many lepublic.ins see in the results of the State elections, and it is not likely that there will be any more serioustalk of anybody else for the head of (he democratic ticket, next year. Col. Bryan's magnificent success in his own State, where he largely increased the fusion majority in the face of many obstacles, includ ing the influence of Federal adminis tration and the lavish expenditure of money by the republicans, aroused admiration even among his opponents, Boss Hanni's success in Ohio, probably the most costly campaign ever carried on in a single State, is accepted as having knocked the bot tom out of all the schemes to spring an anti-McKinley candidate on the republicans, and, unless something of scandalous nature should be fastened upon his administration between now and the meeting of the republican national convention, Mr. McKinley will not be opposed for renomination; but a stiong element in the republican parly, including many of its most prominent men in Congress, have al ready began to demand of Mr. Mc Kinley that he depose King Hanna before the Presidential campaign opens. That will not be an easy job, as Hanna has as much justification in claiming his dearly paid for vitory in Ohio as a personal vindication as Mr. McKinley has in claiming it as an en dorsement of imperialism by the country. Imperialism run mad may be look ed for in future acts of the adminis tration, as Mr. McKinley and all his cabinet have succeeded in persuading themselves into believing that the State elections were an endorsement of imperialism by the people, notwith standing the anti-imperialist victories in Nebraska, and in Maryland. The result in Ohio was not an endorsement of anything except the power of money corruptly spent. Owing to the large number of Mary land democrats engaged in business in Washington there has been unusual re joicing at the National capital on ac count of the return of that State to the democratic fold, from which it would never have strayed had there not been a bitter family row in the democratic camp. Maryland demo crats are very positive in saying that they can keep the State in line now that the party is again united. Now that that there is no campaign to influence, it is admitted by mem bers of the administration that the movement to capture Aguinaldo and his army, which it was officially an nounced the day before election could not possibly fail, has met with delays which it is feared will give Aguinaldo time enough to get away. Gen. Joe Wheeler has written that he will take his seat in the House dur ing the coming session of Congress, but as he has not left Manila yet, so far as known in Washington, and it will take between six and eight weeks for him to make the trip, he cannot be at the opening of Congress. Con stitutional experts say that should Gen. Wheeler appear in the House to take the oath his status would be en tirely different to that occupied, by him when objection was raised to his re suming his seat in the House while holding the commission of a major general of volunteers, on the ground that his acceptance of a commission in the armv vacated his seat in the House an obiection which was sustained by the committee of which Speaker-to-be Henderson was chairman, and whicu would have been sustained by the House had not the personal popularity of Gen. Wheeler been so great that the House declined to consider the reDort on the plea that there was not time enough, owing to the nearness of the end of the session, vvnen yen Wheeler's present commission briga dier general of volunteers was given him he was not a member of the House, although he had been elected as such. Consequently no objection will be made to his being sworn in as a member whenever he presents him sell, but the moment he takes the oath as a member of the House he will cease to be a brigadier general. Secretary (rage -ays he thinks the State election weie ai order to the republicans in Co igres.s to put the single gold siJncunl into a law. Democrats only hope that he will be able to convince the republican lead ers in Congrtss to think the same way. Composer of "Dixie." Daniol Decatur Emmett li Old Now and Poor. Art of Hustling. Hood's Pills Arc prepared from Everybody sings "Dixie," one of the lew really popular eongs of America, a song which touched the right chord and still holds it. But not many people could tell who composed "Dixie," and fewer still know of the composer's present plight, says the New York World. Daniel Decatur Emmett, who wrote the famous song, is old and poor. Not long ago he passed his 84th birthday. He has no family, and lives alone, practically a hermit. Years ago he ceased to receive any income from the songs that made him famous. And there is little hope that he will be re lieved from poverty before he dies. Now and then, on some such oc casions as the recent dinner of the Chicago Fellowship Club, Mr. Emmett is brought forward, talked about and made much of for a day or two. Dur ing the greater part of the time he has opportunity to realize that fame must be, in the majority of cases, its own reward. The story of the composition of "Dixie" has not often been told. Half a century ago, when Daniel Emmett was living in New York, he entertain ed a musical club to which he belong ed by blacking himself with burnt cork and interspersing his "coon songs" with jokes. Thus the "negro minstrel' was originated. This novelty once introduced, Mr. Emmett and his talents were in inord inate demand. Not only America.but England, wildly applauded him. One fortune after another passed through his fingers. Scores of songs, such as "Old Dan Tucker," were composed by him and the next day were in every body's mouth. He understood the popular taste to a nicety. On Saturday night the manager having charge of Mr. Emmett's per formances came to him and impera tively demanded a new "walk-around" for the following Monday night. "Dixie" was accordingly dashed off the next day Sunday. The song struck home immediately. The composer's name was made. And when, a year later, the South went to war her soldiers caught it up, sung it in camp and on the march, charged and died to its melody. Newitt, recently convicted of attempted bribery of a secret service officer in connection with the recent revenue stamp counterfeiting case, asked permission from Judge Mc- rherson, in the United States Dis trict Court, to file an additional rea son whv the defendants should be granted a new trial. The reason was that John Daly, Sr., of Philadelphia, one of the jury, is now an inmate of a Baltimore insane asvlum, and prior to the trial had been treated for in sanity. His form of mental abberra tion is hallucinations. 1 he Court in structed counsel to file his affidavit and fixed Monday for argument. The government will contend that insanity is reason for a challenge, but does not affect prior or subsequent evidence of insanity, unless the juror was insane while acting in the trial of the case. The following amusing article on the mercurial temperament of the American binmess man is taken from the North American iVr.'.v: "Never in my life have I met a man who impressed a stranger with such a sense of alert intellect and unwearied activity. He thought of nothing, and read about nothing, and spoke about nothing, and dreamed about nothing, and one might add, with one or two reservations, he cared fbout nothing, except his article of manufacture, which we shall call for the moment aluminium plates. There was no question about these plates which he had not anticipated and could not answer. The source of aluminium and its value, its constituents and its combinations, its methods of treat ment and its practical uses, all this he knew up and down, through and through, past and present and alto gether. He reasons with much acute ness on the burning questions of aluminium ; he read extensively and generally had a book in his hand on aluminium he had a highly trained and exuberant imagination on the future of aluminium. Times there were when he even drifted into senti ment on the service which aluminium had rendered to the human race. It was a joy to meet a man who knew something thoroughly and believed in something utterly, and one felt that, if one had aluminium works, one would like to have my friend Hart- mann for manager. "While an English merchant saun ters down to his office between 9 and 10, a new York man rises at 6:30 in his suburb, and is busy at work at 8 o'clock. The Englishmen takes off an hour during the day for luncheon at his club, while the American eats his meal in 15 minutes. The English man spends more than an hour at afternoon tea and gossip with friends sauntering about between his club and his office, while the American packs every minute with work. The very walk of an English merchant, slow dignified, self satisfied, and that of the American, rapid, eager, anxious the one looking as if lime were of no importance nor circumstance, and the other as if the loss of a minute might mean ruin are the visible indices to the character of the nations. "No man goes slow if he has the chance of going fast, no man stops to talk if he can talk walking, no man walks if he can ride in a trolley car. no one goes in a trolley car if he can get a convenient steam car, ana by and by no one will go in a steam car if he can be shot through a pneumatic tube. No one writes with his own hand if he can dictate to a steno grapher, no one telegraphs if he can telephone, and by and by when the spirit of American invention nas brought wireless telegraphy into trior- SUBSCRIBE FOR ougn condition a man win simpiy mi with his mouth at one hole and his ear at another and do business with the ends of the earth in a few seconds which the same machine will copy and preserve in letter books and ledgers. Hall's Family Pills are the best. American Oyster Trade. American oysters rank among the best in the world, and the export list is growing all the time. England takes about 3000 barrels a week all the year round. Gone, says the New York Sun are the days ot the old Saddle Rocks, which no man could place entire in his mouth, which for frying were the F.lvsium of the Philadelphia chef. In the old days there were only three centers for oysters Baltimore, New York and New Haven. The best oysters came from Blue Point, Oak Haven, Buzzard's Bay (deep water), Lynn Haven, (Chesapeake), Shrews bury, Mill Pond, Rockaway, Maurice River Cove (mouth ot Delaware), Great South and Lower Bay. Experts in the business say that the finest oysters obtainable are in the first weeks of May, as then the fat, luscious Virginia oysters come North to be planted. Oysters are placed in spawn in "spat beds" along the deeper water shores of bays and estuaries. Each is capable of producing 1,000,000 eggs.
