Jones on East Third street, Jesse kittenhouse, Ex-County Commis sioner, drove from his home in lieavcr Twp. and transacted business at the county seat on Monday. J. C. I.owery and family, of Wilkes-Barre, were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. V. E. Kinker over Sunday. Mrs. Lowery and Mrs. Rinker are sisters. We are pleased to note the arrival home of Miss Annie Ilassert, who has teen absent for many weeks, visiting'relatives and friends in the (Juaker City. Thomas Menscli, one of Franklin town hip's successful farmers, left on Sunday for Buffalo to purchase a car load of cattle, which he intends fattening, John F. Derr and wife of Jackson town ship, were in town a short time on Friday. They were on their homeward journey from Danville where they had been in attendance at a meeting of the baptist Association. We received a call on Saturday from our friend and subscriber W. P. Faus, of Unity ville. Mr. Faus recently returned from an extended trip through the West. He speaks in glowing terms of that part of Uncle Sam's domain. Mrs. Harry Gemberling and son kex ol Selinsgrove, were the guests of the former's sister, Mrs. II. C. Jones on Tuesday. They left on Tuesday evening for Scranton to visit another sister, Mrs. II. A Kneebler. They expect to return in time for our fair. Charles P. F.lwcll arrived in town uii Mon day. He expects to remain here about two weeks. He has been playing during the summer months with the orchestra at Lliata lane Springs Hotel, Maryland. Paul Dillman died at his home in Sunbury on Tuesday morning, as a result of injuries received by a fall from the Rupert river bridge on July 25th, an account of which ap peared m this paper at the time. He was 22 years of age. Sportsmen tell us that when the season opens, November 1, there will be an abundance of rabbits, Corn cutting has revealed the pres ence in the fields of a large number of the cotton tails. On moonlight nights the burrowing animals can be seen disporting in the fields. There will be one hundred people taking part in the program and a fine evening's enter tainment is promised. Next re hearsal Friday evening, Oct. 6, at the Tabernacle, 7 o'clock. A. M. Derr has moved his livery stables from the Wynkoop barn to the Dennison Brink barn in the rear of the Central Hotel stables. This is the barn formerly occupied by the late Dr. C. E. Winner and Mr. Derr some years ago, and is an ex cellent location. Mr. Derr is a good liveryman and always has good horses and clean wagons for his patrons. A newspaper whose columns over flow with advertisements of busi ness men has more influence in at tracting attention to building up a town than any other agency that can be employed. People go where there is business. Capital and labor go where there is an enterprising community. No power on earth is so strong to build up a town as a newspaper well patronized, and its power should be appreciated. 'I. DeWitt Talmatre. The Benton Comet Band will head the procession which will leave this place to attend the unveil ing ceremonies of the Soldiers' Mon ument at Catawissa on Saturday. Next in line will be the G. A. R., Sons of Veterans, and American Mechanics. Any other organization or citizen wishing to participate will report at the G. A. R. Hall, this town at 9 o'clock Saturday morning where conveyances can be had for 20 cents for the round trip. W. O. Holmes, Post Commander. "The Sleeping City," comes to the Opera House Oct. 6, 1899, is a realistic comedy drama, intensely which Friday, four-act human and powerfully written, with a plot of thrilling interest, rich dramatic incident and original humor, neces sitating a cast of more than ordinary ability, which requiretneut is amply met in the company that has been provided. Dullness holds no place in any scene in "The Sleeping City," and its parts are adjusted in an artistic manner. Among the wonderfully realistic scenes are the Battery Park, Hudson River docks, a thrilling escape from Sing Sing, and a Burning Asylum, which are all that a lover of stage realism could ask for.
