THE COLUMBIAN, BLOOMSBURG. PA.
WASHINGTON.
FfOm our KeirularCorrespondcnt.
Washington, July 10, 1899.
It seems that Mr. McKinley is gi
ing into the business of Scnator-m ik
ing, notwithstanding the ill-fortune of
other Presidents who have engaged
therein. Assistant Secretary of War,
Meiklejohn is the administration can
didate for Senator Thurston's seat, he
having stated his intention to retire
March 3rd, 1901, when his term will
expire. Of all branches of this ad
ministration the War Department is
the worst from which a candidate for
anything could be taken, . and the
democrats of Nebraska, who already
had excellent chances for electing a
majority of the next legislature, and
Tlnuston's successor, ought to, and
doubtless will, thank Mr. McKinley
for making their task easier by back
ing the Assistant Secretary of War as
the administration candidate for the
Senate.
The latest gossip in Washington
has it that the Alger-Pringree mix-up
is the personal work of Mr. McKinley,
and that the entire influence of the
administration is to be used to help
Alger defeat Senator McMillan, pro
vided, of course, that the republicans
can elect a majority of the next Michi
gan legislature, a very important pro
viso, by the way. In view of what
Alger has done to discredit the ad
ministration, this seems to be an as
tonishing sort of a deal, but those
who have closely followed the various
Hanna-McKinley political deals from
the spring of 96 to the present time
find it difficult to be astonished at any
thing. According to this story, which
may or may not be tuie, Alger has
succeeded in convincing Mr. McKin
ley that all of the attacks on Algerism
have been in reality attacks on entire
administration, and that unless Alger
can be vindicated by an election to
the Senate all these charges will be
placed against the McKinley adminis
tration by history. It is plain that the
support of Alger by the McKinley ad
ministration will be an act of treach
ery to Senators McMillan and Bur
rows, both of whom have been stead
fast administration men, but treachery
to friends has long been a Hanna
specialty, and administration Senatots
will not be as badly needed during the
remainder of Mr. McKinley's term as
they were when the republicans were
short a majority in the Senate.
Democrats are citing the ease with
which ex-Gov. .Hogg, of Texas, con
verted the Tammany Fourth of July
meeting, which it had been generally
understood was to ignore Col. Bryan,
if not directly antagonize him, into a
wildly enthusuastic Bryan gathering
as an evidence of the wonderful hold
that Col. Bryan has upon the rank and
file of the democratic party the men
who cast the votes, but do not at
tempt to engage in candidate-making.
That meeting may prove a valuable
object lesson to those who now im
agine the possibility of preventing the
National Convention registering the
will of the democratic party at large.
A New Mexican who attended the
recent Rough Riders reunion in that
Territory has let a brand new Roose
velt cat out of the bag, He says that
Gov. "Teddy told his old comrades
that a brigade of Rough Riders would
be enlisted for the Philipines at once,
and that he could command it, if he
decided it advisable to resign the
governorship of New York to take it.
Nobody in Washington had heard a
word of all this until the arrival of the
gentleman from New Mexico. It may
be merely a product of the "silly sea
son", or it may be true, but if Gov.
Roosevelt is willing to resign his pres
ent exalted position to go to the Phil
ippines, he will surprise those who
give him credit for knowing how to
hold on to a good thing when he has
it.
There is a hitch somewhere in the
programme arranged for the giving
out of concessions for various sorts of
franchises in Porto Rico, and it was
this week semi-oflicially announced
that the War Department would pro
bably not grant any concessions on
There is more Catarrh in this sec
tion of the country than all other dis
eases put together, and until the last
few years was supposed to be incur
able. For a great many years doctors
pronounced it a local disease, and
prescribed local remedies, and by
constantly failing to cure with local
treatment, pronounced it incurable.
Science has proven catarrh to be a
constitutional disease, and therefore
requires constitutional treatment.
Hall's Catarrh Cure, manufactured
by F. J. Cheney & Co., Toledo,
Ohio, is the only constitutional cure
on the market. It is taken internally
in doses from 10 drops to a teaspoon
ful. It acts directly on the blood and
mucous surfaces of the system. They
offer one hundred dollars for any case
it fails to cure. Send for circulars and
testimonials. Address,

Hall's Family Pills are the best, im
the island in advance of Congressional
action. This announcement would
hae aroused more public interest if
it h,d not been knon that Mr. Mc
Kinley was almost, if nut mute tier-
su.ided of his richt to tirmnuliiate a
code ot laws for l'ono Riro in ad
vance of Congressional acuon. In fact
it is understood that the Insular Com
mission, which ended its official life
with the close of the last fiscal year,
has been re-habilitated by Mr. Mc
Kinley for the express purpose of pre
paring a code of laws for Porto Rico.
If the administration assumes the right
to make laws for Porto Rico it will
hardly leave the granting of conces
sions to Congress, especially when
men to whom it is under political ob
ligations are after those concessions.
It has been officially announced
that all of the new volunteer officers
above the rank of Captain are to be
taken from the regular army: that one
captain and one first lieutenant are to
be appointed from the volunteers from
each state, and all the second lieuten
ants from the volunteers at large.
A new system of feeding prisoners
has been inaugurated in Lancaster
county's jail. Instead of meals being
furnished in the cells the inmates are
now marched to the cordor 1 here
they are all fed at a long table. One !
stroke of a bell brings every man out j
of his cell, each one c.irryug his own
stool; at another up they sit down,
and at the thud ring they begin to eat
and march back by signals. The new
plan is expected to prove a saving to
taxpayers, as much food has hereto
fore been wasted through individual
service. Besides, the innovation will
be a wholesome break to the mon
otony of life in the cells. The ex
periment in Lancaster will be of in
terest to every county in Pennsylvania.

caused at this season, however, by
improverished blood, poor appetite
and general debility. These conditions
may be remedied bv enriching the

We advise you to get a bottle and try
it if you are not feeling just right. It
will do you more good than a six

THE LAND OF OPHIR.
Tliere la Evidence That It Waa Wliat

The Mouomotapa rcprlon, In Rho

pold mines of the ancients nre now re
discovered nnd the pold Ingot molds
rediscovered In ltliotlesin nre identical
with tlic tin ingot molds used by tha
1'hoenicinns In Cornwall. It is believed,
says the Matabcle Times, that the Phoe
nicians worked the South Africun
mines 20(H) 11. C. Scripture tells us how
Ilirnrn, the I'hoenicinn llng brought
enormous quantities ot gold, Ivory nnd
slaves for King Solomon, nnd where
could nil these hnve been discovered to
gether, nnd in such large quantities ns
described In' holy writ, if not in this
portion of southeast Afrlen? Job's ref
erences to "gold dust" locate the source
of Solomon's wealth In the pnrts, nr.d
certainly neither the "Ivory" nor the
"slaves" nor the. "npes" of I'.ible history
came from Iiitl'in, for Africa, ns is well
known, hns ever been credited in his
tory ns the ivory, slave nnd npc-produc-ing
country. Further, there is consid
erable doubt whether liny other coun

hnve produced the quantity of gold
mentioned In Chronicles nnd Kings.
Scattered throughout the country are
colossal ruins of fortresses, temples of
distinctly I'hocnician origin, identical
with the ruins now seen in the land of
the Phoenicians nnd built by the same
rnce ns erected Stonehenge on Salisbury
plain and Inter built the rounded tow

and the British Isles. There, too, are
the gigantic monoliths, cloven stones
nnd stone circles, with altars nnd sacred
inclosures.

The Dance Must Go-
In commenting on the crusade
against dancing, which was inaugura
ted several years ago by the Method
1st ministers of Chicago, and recently
revived by them, the Bradford County
Republican says :
" The Methodist ministers of Chic
ago have combined their forces against
dancing. Tnis is an old-fashionc
war of theirs, but it was generally sup
posed that they had modified their
primitive objections to the dance
There are so many things in Chica,
which mifjht challenge the fiercest
and noblest opposition of Method
ist and all other ministers that a
foray upon this particular evil, if it
be an evil, is like a waste of orthodox
powder. Dancing as a social pleas
ure has declined within 50 years and
at the present rate of neglect will in
time utterly disappear as a recreation.
This has been noted all over the
country, the disappearance being
greatest in the crowded centers, where
other amusements have taken the
place of dancing. Thirty years ago
the winter season was on its social
side little more than a series of balls
and assemblies. We celebrated all
great events of state with dancing.
We had inauguration balls and diplo
matic balls, and associations were
tormed with the one purpose of giv
ing balls. Dancing was one of the
necessitous accomplishments of every
young lady and gentleman in society.
All that has changed. A score of in
fluences have tended to drive the ball
loom into neglect. It can hardly be
said that they are moral influences.
Men and women have found other
and more wholesome enjoyments, and
perhaps it may be said of most young
men and women in society that when
night comes they are too tired to
dance 'till daylight and " go home
with the girls in the morning. 1 he
Methodist ministers ought to give the
bicycle, the tennis court and the game
of golf some credit for this change,
and even the theater might come in
for a share of the influence. At all
events, dancing as a passion is about
done with. The end of the century
doesn t care for it, except as an occa
sional spectacle. The dancing mas
ter will tell you this with tears in his
eyes.
Viscount Ilinton, the scion of English
nobility who hna been earning u mod
est livelihood by grinding an organ in
tha streets of London, claims not only
the title and estates of Karl Poulctt, but
the furniture and ornaments In thp
great hnlls at Hlnton St. George, says
London Mail.
These include ono of the finest private
collections of tapestry in the world
tnpestries bearing the design of 1'nul
Veronese nnd other grant masters,
which are renowned for their beauty
and value throughout the world of urt.
There are 17 of these splendid tapes
tries at Ilinton St. George. They are
all of the renaissance period nnd were
mndo nbout 1570. Some of them have
the Poulett arms woven into the fabric
As mnny of these splendid possessions
of the l'oulctts are as much as 20 feet
In length, it may be rendily understood
that they occupy a grcut space In the
halls.
These tnpestries nre valued at 1,000
each. That is their average price. Con
noisseurs assert that severul tapestries
in the collection nre worth 3,000 to
4,000 each. They are all in splendid
condition, and if Viscount Ilinton gets
them they will constitute perhaps his
most unique possession.

write to you for your advice, and tako
your medicine. Was troubled with the

sometimes when lying down or sitting
was unable to get up. Would have
such pain in groins could hardly walk.
" I can say I have never seen any
thing so wonderful as Lydia E. Pink

wonders for me. lloplng that many
of my suffering sisters may be led to
take your medicine from reading this
letter, I remain, sincerely yours, Mas.
